halloween
» If you are in the Nashville area - please come by my house on Saturday. It might be a good time or, at the very least, extremely nerdy. How can you pass that up?

Sorry I didn't post much today but hey.. I was busy! I hope everyone has a good Halloween weekend. For those of you not in the Nashville area - hit up the comments for what you are going as this year. I think I'm going for Crazed Scientist (maybe).

» I always seem to find the most distracting sites when I'm the hardest at work. The iFilm Big Picture provides plenty of great video material - the Triumph: Poop Valhalla in particular. If that's not your bag then I'd be willing to bet there is something on the Viral Video page that will amuse you.

The Pleasure Of My Company
» I finished reading The Pleasure of My Company, a book by Steve Martin. I expected something a lot different than what I got - the story of an obsessive compulsive agoraphobic. The ending was a bit too tidy for my taste but overall it was a surprisingly pleasurable read.

» Just so everyone knows, AppleCare does not support dead batteries - it is considered a "consumable item." Ridiculously frustrating to pay for a service that is supposed to care for your Apple but doesn't cover something as common as a battery. I suppose I understand but I definetly feel rooked.

Notes from SF: Part 2
» Notes from SF- Part 2:
- I know I'd be quite disappointed in the music contained within but I gotta give love to the cover of this Joan of Arc and this Dead Poetic disc. Nice humor value with the Joan of Arc and the Dead Poetic is a nice clear overlayed sleeve.

- These Jim Harter books contain some fantastic images but I find myself wanting this one for some reason.

- Patricia Sweetow art is pretty interesting. The large untitled black masses seem so simple but really have quite a lot going on.

- Saw some amazing artwork by Jess (gigantic collage piece), Joan Brown (seriously the raddest bird sculpture I've ever witnessed), Barry McGee (insane installment at the MOMA).

- Caught the Lichtenstein exhibit and decided that "Sussex" is my favorite piece of his.. I wish I could find a proper pic of it.

- Sissyfoot Kickball League was in extreme effect on Sunday.. many thanks to all involved.

airplane musings
» Musings from the flight to San Francisco:
- My first flight on Frontier Airlines was on a plane with TV screens embedded in the headrest of each seat broadcasting a digital cable signal for $5. I did not pay the fee but did catch a Pretty Girls Makes Graves video on the free preview channel. I though that was odd. I was pleased that a small airline was offering digital TV on their flight.. a worthy distraction.
- At some point I looked out the window and was sure that the wing of the plane was actually the horizon line. There's no real point to this anecdote but I was impressed at how easily I tricked myself into seeing such a strange site.
- Tried to think of the song that has lyrics similar to "don't need another friend, got too many friends" in some sort of mid-90's angsty breakup song. I believe it's Local H now that I give it a second thought.
- Is there an etiquette to being at the baggage claim? Shouldn't you stand 2-3 feet away from the carosuel while awaiting your bag? Is there really a need to stand right next to the metal framework so that the time it takes you to grab your luggage is the absolute minimum?

fonts
» Browsing for typefaces tonight I ran across Wooden Type Fonts - a great collection of wood block style faces, even if the presentation of every face is done in extruded 3d for no apparent reason, some of the styles are nice. The other collection I ran into is the C-Font free face collection - which is, the faces that are offered for free. The majority of them are not really going to be handy for any project, or just not my style.. but there is a small collection of Kantakana type that I think might, maybe, someday come in handy if you're making some nonsensical dance flyer.. you never know.

blast those ashes
» Apparently there is a company in Nashville that will send your ashes into space. It's a very small portion of your ash in comparison to the cost (about a grand for 1 gram of ash) but it's one step closer to my ultimate dream of a utopian society that harnesses the power of the sun by collecting its refuse and launching it towards that great orb of heat and light to be obliterated forever. Seriously, lets quit burying that crap and start having the sun burn it up!

MAILBAG
» Mailbag: Spamusement - poorly drawn cartoons inspired by spam headlines. Worth viewing for about 20 seconds, then you get it.

Bush notes - not to completely negate my attempt to be bi-partisan, but this is just funny.. not so much because it's Bush but because I'm sure everyone would like to see what either candidate was writing during the debates.

Spongebob Shinspants - I've read this multiple places but apparently the Spongebob Squarepants soundtrack has rad contributions from the likes of The Shins, Flaming Lips, Wilco, and Ween. I guess the people who actually watch the movie aren't actually going to be buying the soundtrack...

Cocoon: The Road Trip - Zine/ Book/ Video tour... this may seem kind of overly indie / emo to go to a zine tour but jack saturn sent me an email about it.. so it gets included in the mailbag links.

There is a new issue of Arkitip. $30 seems a bit high for me, but I guess when you have a multi-color run on a limited edition mag you're bound to incur some costs.

New stuff at VEER - including a wallpaper version of that Lorum Ipsum bird shirt..

Loads of pics of the new skinny PS2.

Several people sent me a link to the Carl Lewis music video - it's certainly one of the more bizarre things I've ever seen.. that grandma with the bubbles kind of turns my stomach, especially once the hot tub gets involved.

Back from CMJ
» New York was incredible. I guess that goes without saying but I enamored with the diversity of architecture, the fact that anything you want exists there, the public transport, the ability to actually walk to a destination, the intense amount of beautiful ladies, the food, the venues, and just the overall vibe - it's super hectic but it wasn't scary or anything.

Bands Seen: The Features, Gratitude, Pidgeon, Rob Crow, Turing Machine, Detachment Kit, The Wrens, Morningwood, some random screamo bands at CBGB's, Rag City Dolls, Autolux, Vietnam, The Static Age, Death From Above, Nicolai Dunger, Sufjan Stevens, Tegan and Sara, Living Things, Autolux (yes, again), The Fever, DJ ZTrip.

Highlights: Autolux twice was certainly a treat but being able to hang out with Scott, Jeremy, Ryan, Malisa, Deuce, Lauren, and NYC Residents Chad, Bryan, Nick, and Rob certainly ranks highest on my list. Obviously there were some amazing record and clothing stores as well.. but the whole vibe of the city just blew me away (Guggenheim in real life?! what?!). The graffiti is intensely inspiring.

Low Points: Waiting for subway trains for over an hour.. that was horrible, being denied waffles when waffles were promised, not seeing all of the city.. it's just too damn big, and probably the technology convention we attended.

Free Schwag: waaay too much to mention but CMJ did me well. Lots of CD's worth checking out, lots worth throwing away or selling. The free Brian Wilson vinyl and random magazines were pretty nice but if anyone wants a lame MySpace button.. I've got two!

I'm sure some photo's will surface from all this but I only brought my Lomo with me, so I've got to get the pics developed and scanned before I can share anything.. though it is kind of a crapshoot.. b/c it is possible that none of the pics even came out.

Thanks again to Chad and Bryan for being such great (yet seperate) hosts.

Hale Links : Volume 14 (NYC Edition)
» Hale Links: Volume 14
Tread carefully here folks.. this is likely the only entry you're going to get from me for the next week. I'll be in NYC for the CMJ Marathon and I seriously doubt I'll be browsing the web much. Fortunately I've got a backlog of Hale links to share, just be sure to ration them throughout the week.

- Wangdu Online - Insane sculptures based on media published photography. The body text may not make any sense but just click the nav items at the bottom and you'll figure out.

- Thomas Athey Photography - nice portfolio of photographic works.. some of which I have a hard time believing haven't been immensely Photoshopped.. but I suppose that's a testament to a good photograph.

- Frog Design Timeline - follow the timeline of Frog Design as they go from working with Apple to designing the UI for Windows XP.

- Funfurde - It's a design blog much in the same vein as MoCoLoco but with different stuff.

- Robo Mop - The site wasn't responding properly at the time of this posting but I think you can probably figure it out based on the name.

- Josey Muller Brockmann - minimalist poster designer - check out #6.. how could you not love that?

- Collider - the full screen aspect of the portfolio sucks, but the work is pretty solid. Check the motion graphics on the "Pod" piece.. really nice. (Design -> Pod Film)

- Aberlardo Morell - nice photography portfolio but the camera obscura stuff is absolutely nuts.

- Har Har - so not funny that it's amusing.. or maybe it's just so not funny that it's not funny.. either way it will induce the rolling of the eyes.

- Aaron Dana - illustrator/artist. I prefer the drawings to the paintings but there are some nutty things in both sections.

- SFAUSTINA - I could tell by the splash that I was going to enjoy this one. It's the whole BEAST style of collage / dirtification kind of design. Though I will say that sounds like I'm pigeon holing the skills involved here.. every section of work is varied and has something interesting for your peepers.

- Beams T - This Japanese T-Shirt store is fairly difficult to navigate (going backwards invokes the intro again for some reason) but if you want to be the guy on the block with the t-shirts everyone asks about.. here ya go.

- Poketo - "artist designed wallets and wristbands, ect. some of the wallets are pretty cool." That's verbatim from Hale.. couldn't have said it better myself.

- Gus Powell - photography portfolio. Lots of beautifully framed shots, and several people shots that seem too perfect to be true.

- Childrens Storytime - Ryan recommends Curious George and the High-Tension Power Line but I'm not sure I can give my seal of approval for any of them... so weird that someone would invest time in such a thing.

- extinct animal action figures!! Yes please!

- Dan McCarthy - a nice selection of paintings, drawings, and prints with a healthy obsession with dinosaur skeletons, powerlines, and plant life. Look at this poster.. c'mon.. that's great!

- Trace a Mobile - pay a fee, insert a number, find out the physical location of the phone! While this would seem handy at first for someone like Mason who has been known to lose his phone.. I can't imagine the sheer limitless invasion of privacy possibilities involved here. I'd rather not be tracked.. thanks.

- The Most Important Gift Catalog In The World- "why donate money to a needy family? you should donate something like a llama or a goat instead." I suppose this shouldn't be mocked but reading stuff like "The gift of a goat can change a familys life." is a rather foreign concept to me.

- Nose Hair Game - you've likely seen this but it's probably been awhile since it's grossed you out. Might be time for another visit.

- Schladerbotze.

The interesting part is that people are theorizing that it will have a color screen and display album art when available for a selected track. » If the cover is any indication of the content within, the new Flaming Lips book could be pretty cool. Whoever wrote the press release really needs to check the bands website before linking to it multiple times - as the official site has no mention of the book or how to order it.

coldwar ads
» The server is a bit slow but this slew of old Coldwar Propaganda has some extremely great graphic design. How could you deny yourself this gem? You can't.

arts HOLE
» Here's a couple of great artists to check out:

Stuart Bayley - cool illustration style. I really like the simple, subtle, collage style on the Fashion pieces and the exaggerated body shape in the Communism piece.

Simon Vinceiums - more design than illustration.. I really enjoy the VAP Postcard cutout style and the coloring, layout, and oh so slight sloppiness on the Land/Sky piece.

More great people to discover via Arts Hole.

politics
» I promise I'll tone down the political posts after this one.. please go read AMERICAblog and discover the ridiculousness of denying something you said when it's on tape from television. But in the end, this is my favorite part of the blog:
A friend said to me earlier today that this administration truly is Orwellian. We are at war with you, we have always been at war with you, and we always will be at war with you. And tomorrow, we'll be at war with someone else, and we will have always been at war with them, etc. The truth is irrelevant. Facts are irrelevant. History is irrelevant. When you rule by the divine right of kings, right and wrong are inconvenient conventions best left to the little people..

Extreme? Maybe a bit but really not that far off base. In the end, if you are going to vote for Bush - I applaud you. I don't understand how you rationalize it but at least you're going to vote. BUT could you do the nation a favor and vote Democratic on the rest of the ticket just so that there is some sort of natural balance achieved between the Legislative and Executive branches?

interactive map
» While the Vote Predictor is a pretty nice site for figuring out where each state stands according to the latest polls (keeping in mind that polls are total bs) but this interactive map has the ability to show voting trends in the US for the past 20 years. Basically this race could come down to being decided by a handful of states (FL, LA, TN, all can tip the delicate balance).

But what if there is a tie? Do we vote again? Is it decided by the popular vote? I suggest that the candidates be subjected to a three part challenge - physical (relay race), mental (game of chess), and umm... reality show (Is Kerry the next Danny Bonaduce?).

thanks cheney
» Vice Presidential debates are apparently a lot more heated than your standard Presidential debate. Even though there was a ton of verbatim quotes from the VP's that we had already heard last Thursday they managed to cover some new ground. As always, read FactCheck.org before forming an opinion, then check TDW and even this CNN blog. Oh, might not be a bad idea to keep an eye on KG either.

I'm not sure who "won" last night because I think ultimately that is decided on Nov. 2nd.. it's a waste of time to say who attacked the others character more effectively.

» Anyone ever travelled on Frontier Airlines? I hear they are "A whole different animal." Not sure how that applies to flight but if anyone had any anecdotes (any at all) regarding them.. lets hear it.

he-man video mashup
» The He-Man / Big Lebowski video mashup is pretty entertaining.. and if nothing else, extremely vulgar. Keep the speakers down at the office for this one.. but pretty funny I suppose. Link via Stereogum via Screenhead.

digi cassette
» Mason and I were talking about how an mp3 player shaped like a cassette tape would be a great idea for those people that only had tape decks in their car but still wanted to maybe jump on the whole digital bandwagon revolution. Turns out it's such a good idea that it's already been done - which I knew, but it's cool to see all the different versions of the player and the possibilities of it. Link via Cool Hunting.

» If you like Deerhoof, then you'll probably want to download Bibidi Babidi Boo - a collection of live songs. And the little map compass thing on the page isn't bad for those of you who aren't a fan of Deerhoof.

telmolindo
» Speaking of portfolio's, the TELMOLINDO portfolio is nice and clean interface with a load of great work. There's some naked ladies in there but nothing you couldn't pass off as completely artful. Love the textures, color choices, and just overall feel of loads of the pieces (sorry if that sounds bad now that you know there are naked ladies)...

» What is the best portfolio site you've seen? Not neccasarily the content itself but the way it is presented. Daniel votes for the John Mark Sorum site... I'm not sure what my favorite is.. what's yours?

if mtv were...
» The "If MTV Were..." promo videos from Brand New School are pretty great (something about Alec Baldwin narrating adds a certain flair) but really don't make any sense. If MTV Were A Foosball Player he would dominate the pro series unmercifully? With what? The Real World and other reality shows involving true teen stories? Good promos but MTV still blows.

weekend roundup
» Weekend roundup: Saw The Whole Fantastic World on Friday super late.. good show but bands really should be starting before 1 around here. Saturday was a flurry of bad movies, great new comedies, and unsurprising but informative documentaries. Saw Apollo Up on Sunday and that just about wraps up events worth mentioning... I bought a "skin case" for my iPod and kind of hate it and am browsing for better alternatives.

debates
» I really wanted to comment on the debates from last Thursday but I felt it was neccasary to have a few days to let it all sink in and see what kind of fact checking was going on with the two candidates statements. Turns out both of them tend to exagerrate a little bit. In the end, any commentary I could try and inject about the debates was pretty much already perfectly summed up. Typically, TDW is what some might consider a bit vulgar with their commentary but I think it's about the most honest roundup that I've seen yet. Hopefully the next two debates will be a little more revealing (and the VP debate should be interesting because I've got my fingers crossed that Cheney really gives Edwards a good downhome cursing).

knife party
» While I don't agree with all of the politics behind it (comparing US government to Nazi's is lame) , this Knife Party video is really well done. Lots of well put together motion, propaganda design, and some decent effects. Hopefully the content won't throw some of you off, as the piece is rather well done.

» Congratulations to The Visual Reserve for launching their full-fledged portfolio site. The attention to detail on the animations is top notch, and the overall vibe is great. A fine mixture of dirtified / textured design elements and nice, clean, flowing flourishes here and there.
