» In the spirit of Christmas everyone should check out this Illustrated Holiday Shopping Guide. I agree with Ryan that the final image reminds me of a Grandaddy song.

» The Extension Room has a Firefox extension called "X" that will allow you to clear your cache, cookies, history, download history, form info, and more with a very quick click. There's a reason it's also called "Paranoia." Handy though.

t610 accessories
» Anyone using the Sony Ericcson T610 may want to check out the Float Mobile Agent, a bluetooth application that lets you browse files, make and receive calls via the computer, and lots of other functions you may be missing out on. Mac users may want to check out Blue Phone Menu for some added integration of their phone with OS X.

iPod shuffle
» Today I set my iPod to play straight through, alphabetically, my entire song list. I'm still in the numbers but making progress. I'm amazed that I have songs named "0078h", ">1", "$50 Tea", "#8 (I Still Love You, But I Want You To Die)", and "4/28/78." That's just the tip of the iceberg but if anyone can name the artists on those songs you'll earn my respect for the day.

im perfctinist
» Three ranges of shirts available at the imperfectionist. The "Battle for Evermore" series is fairly epic for a shirt line but the "Odd Bedfellows" line is my favorite by far. Anytime strange new creatures are created - like a cross between a moose and a gorilla - I am pleased.

FedEx arrow
» Graphic designers may enjoy reading this interview with Lindon Leader - the guy who made the FedEx logo. It's a short read but he goes in to some detail about the impact of the hidden arrow and how it's an effective tool regardless of the fact that arrows are a mundane and mostly useless design element.

darko - weekend redux
» This past weekend became the turning point of productivity for me. I've got a ton of projects to finish before the end of the year and I am determined to accomplish them. On top of that, I'd like to work on things that are completely devoid of any sort of work related function and just purely for myself. That being said, this weekend was not all that productive but I did see several movies:
I finally got around to seeing Elf and enjoyed it. It's kind of tough for Will Ferrell to carry a movie but he pulled it off pretty well. And anything involving Zooey Deschanel gets me interested.

The Core is pretty much the most amazing disaster movie I've ever seen. Words can not properly capture the feeling of elation you get when viewing a movie about a group of rag-tag scientists traveling to the core of the Earth to give it a nuclear kickstart.

But before I saw all those, I saw the Donnie Darko Directors Cut showing at the Belcourt (who actually have some fun facts about the film that I'd never considered). Overall, the movie is still incredibly well done and a baffling sci-fi teen-esque movie about parallel universes and following your Chosen Path™. The music changes weren't necessary (sorry, "Killing Moon" is a better starting track) and while some of the enhanced CG helped (no more bug-eyed Donnie) some of them were terrible (the PURGE / grid graphics at the end in particular). I'm not sure how I feel about the pages of Roberta Sparrows book being shown on screen.. I suppose it was beneficial if you'd never seen the movie but terms like The Manipulated Dead don't really mean much when you've only got 20 seconds to take it all in. Basically I think people should see the original cut and then spend some quality time on the website figuring out the additional things. Where's the next Richard Kelly film? Sheesh..

Thanksgiving
» I'm off for the next few days for Thanksgiving so things should be relatively quiet around here. Hope everyone has a good one.

In honor of Black Friday I'd like everyone to please post something in the comments that A) you'd like to receive for Christmas or B) something you think would make a good gift. Here's an example:

A) Emile Berliner Gramophone Turntable - I have no idea why I would possibly need this but something about it fascinates me. Especially the idea of being able to send postcards etched with your own warbly voice.

B) Vice Magazine Dos and Don'ts. I have this and every page of it is golden. VICE Magazine is like the ultimate litmus test - if your friends find it utterly offensive, tell them you need some space.

ninja cruise
» Redesigns be popping up left and right! Crapton of new works from NinjaCruise. 29 is probably my favorite but I really enjoy something in all of them.. the clean illustration style of the first piece and #19 (I think) are a nice sort of clash to the chaotic styles.

» The new Element Catalog looks to have some great stuff.. too bad I can't order any of it directly or even find a link to get the catalog itself. And why must I own a 17" laptop?? I need a new bag and most of them don't come in such monstrous size.

» If you are a designer / artist and are unfamiliar with the works of Storm Thorgerson please stop working on whatever it is that you're doing at the moment and take a look at his vast portfolio. Actually, I take that back.. I don't care if you're a designer or artist, everyone should view these works, read the mans words, and realize that they're so good that you've seen them a hundred times.

OBEY clothing and more
» There is a new OBEY Clothing site - though not much is there at the moment in terms of examples of apparel brought to you by Shepard Fairey. There's also a bunch of new stuff up over at the OBEY Giant site. Overall, I still love the simplisticly stylized OBEY style but there is a handful of new stuff (like this) that looks great but then you read it and realize how hokey it is. Same goes for the G Dubs poster - it's well done, and certainly conveys its message but it's too easy. Fortunately, he's still pumping out stuff like this that is just insanely great.

leninade
» Ryan was telling me about his weekend with Mason and how they encountered some Leninade. A lemonade packaged in Communist propaganda ("Get Hammered and Sickled!"). While part of me finds this wildy amusing another part of me wonders about the watering down of the Communist symbols. The sickle and hammer is a powerful image, even if you don't know exactly what it stands for you know it's related to Communism. Ryan points out that it's kind of interesting to be using such imagery for Capitalist purposes. Stuff like this apparently happens all the time, powerful graphic design getting watered down to appeal to the masses even if they don't have any idea what it means. Hopefully Communist imagery will not suffer the same fate as Che Guevara and be so proliferated to the masses that any and all meaning is completely gone.

It doesn't hurt that the site looks great too. Link via Mason.

movie weekend
» Caught two movies this weekend - both existing on the opposite end of the spectrum from each other.

Saw DiG! on Friday night and while I found the antics of Antone Newcombe to be over the top I think that was kind of the point. The Dandy Warhols kind of played a bit of a backseat through the film but seeing the dichotomy of their success vs. the BJM flailing was definetly worth seeing.

Saturday night was filled with the Indiana Jones-wanna-be mindless entertainment called National Treasure. The movie was entertaining but never quite as thrilling or puzzlerific as you can tell they wanted it to be. The biggest disappointment of the film was that with the mention of FreeMason's people will think any legit interest in such a thing is fueled by the film... when really the Secret Society is infinitely more interesting than the movie ever will be.

Sunday I caught a tiny tiny portion of the Aireline set. It's unfortunate that they aren't playing again until next year but I am kind of stoked to hear new songs recorded first instead of always hearing their live incarnations initially.

Also managed to view a lot of Arrested Development (even though I've seen all of the first season). The show's website splash reminds me of all the promotional materials for I ♥ Huckabees.

target is nuts
» Okay, you have to admit that this is kind of insane. Target is having a 2 day sale so they are offering a free wake up service from the likes of Ice T, Cheech Marin, Heidi Klum, Lord Vader, a chicken, and some other weird characters. The commercials really aren't half bad (Urban Thunder is kind of my favorite but the Heidi Klum one is funny). That's quite a bit of hype for a sale.

dr. doom
» I was never a huge fan of The Fantastic Four (though I never harbored any ill will either) but I had heard some rumors that the forthcoming movie was going to make some changes to their most infamous villian, Dr. Doom (no mask, not a monarch of a country, not a dabbler in the black arts) but at least the movie makers seem to have gotten the look right. Honestly, they should have just cast MF Doom because he's already got the mask but it didn't happen. The early morning comic book nerd out feels good.

I don't have anyone that is willing to go with me but this guy is responsible for playing a 26.2 hour song, played a 10 hour in-store performance from inside a refrigerator box, and has some decent songs on his older releases. It's mildly Christmas themed in that you are drawing a "tree" but you're using sound pitch, inertia, and springiness to do it (mouse or microphone apparently). » Got a heads up from Go Daddy the other day.. and Robbie just reminded me.. that there is a new iCann ruling that allows domain transfers to occur without your explicit permission. It's kind of shady and weird but you may want to log into your registrar and see if they have some sort of Lock Domain option. - Cherry OS lets PC users emulate OS X. Anyone willing to try this and let me know how it works out for them?

- In Good Company - new movie with Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and Scarlett Johanssen. Before the trailer gets all cheesy love story it actually looks pretty decent.

- Ten by Ten is a cool Flash application that shows you the worlds top stories coupled with important headlines. It's like an artsy Google news.

- Check this insane urban graffiti animation.. mostly insane because of the pre-planning involved and the execution of the photography works so well.

weekend treat
» Links to tide you over for the weekend:
+ Check out these Japanese McDonalds commercials - female / male. The Ronald McDonald couture outfits are pretty amazing and the whole air of uber-seriousness mixed with sandwich advertising is pretty much hilarious.

+ Modest Mouse bootlegs - and some Ugly Cassanova stuff as well.

- Get Him, Eat Him have some decent songs and some mildly creepy drawings for a navigation.
- If you didn't look at this the other day, please do so now.. I can't get over the griffin.

# Fit For Use only has one item available at the moment but it's embroidered and I've been told more is on the way.

# The paintings of Rachel Salomon are pretty nice. The portraits, drawings, and print work are nice too.. but the painting section is preferred.

- Willy Wonka - the Johnny Depp version. If he doesn't smash that cane open at some point and shower the children with candy I will be upset.

% Really nice work from the Ghava Visual Agency. Nice diversity though I especially like the Adult Swim poster and Triple Five Soul business cards. - Derek Lerner works for Ghava, you should see his work.. nice blend of fine art and graphic design. - You know what, I think everyone who works for Ghava has an inspiring site! Sadek Bazaraa (love the photo layouts), Randall Lane (line drawings mixed with dot matrix printer styles.. hot), David Merten (just one pic, but it's nice), and Peter Rentz (design design design). Insane.

+ "Who names a wheelchair 'Spazz'?"

+ It's rare that I like a case mod but this one is kind of a work of art. It's like finding an insanely rusted, used, crappy typewriter and realizing it's actually a relic from the future sent here to inform you of the secrets of the galaxy. More mods here.

+ Beards With Beef have some nice illustrated works.

- Block Gothic typeface is purty.

Have a good one folks.. Monday will bring forth happiness and joy.

It has the same aesthetic, texturing, and imaginative navigation technique that you would expect from a SoFake / We Fail site but I think kind of takes it up another level with the sound design. Browse the site with headphones on.. the subtle panning and volume handling really makes the site experience that much more enjoyable.

stolen election?
» I am sure this will come across as quite partisan on my part but I promise I've already resigned to the fact that Bush won.. I'm just seeing a ton of these links and feel the need to share. First I saw this message which made me instantly skeptical but since then I've seen a bunch more articles basically all saying the same thing - electronic voting machines are not to be trusted. The best insight probably comes from Black Box Voting but can anyone really have the real facts on this?

1) Nothing may have been tampered with and this is just a big conspiracy theory because some people are rather upset about the re-election thing.

2) Is it possible that the count from the Electoral College will come back in a month and declare Kerry the winner? Possible - yes. Likely? No. His concession is not legally binding so by all technical accounts, he could still be President.

3) I honestly think that numbers have been fudged in places.. I do believe that. Enough to swing the election? Eh, not likely.. but any amount of dishonesty with the voting machines is enough to make me think the whole system should be re-thought. What about open source voting?

» I'm having a hard time with the up and coming popularity of Neck Face. His crude drawings seem to have infiltrated everywhere and now he has a shirt and a book available! Part of me really doesn't like what he's doing (or understand it) but there's another part of me that really likes that shirt and is intrigued by what the book may contain.

previews
» Maybe I shouldn't judge trailers tacked on to a kids movie but has anyone seen the preview for National Treasure? It's possible that in some way this will turn out cool but it's more likely to be incredibly ridiculous - especially based on the fact that the Declaration of Independence has an invisible map on the back of it.

Cars (the next Pixar film) looks like they're just sick of working for Disney and are delivering the weakest concept they could muster.

incredibles
» Caught The Incredibles last night. What can you say? Pixar has the lockdown on really well done animations, lighting, textures, and a penchant for a superb storyline. A good amount of laughs, some cheesy drama, and just overall great character development. It's not going on my top 10 favorite ever movies or anything but I was quite amused during the time I was watching it.

IM linkage
» Random IM linkage for the day so far: Toogle - the image converting ascii search engine? Some great stuff and some baffling stuff as well.

- Hot eBay Watch with a built-in drum machine. The Japanese are officially slaughtering us with ridiculous gadgets.

- File Cabinets from iKea that I enjoy.. don't ask why I was discussing this with anyone...

- An amazing video that I am supposed to watch later.. Daniel sent me the link, so you can ask him what it is.. I have yet to view it.

- I need to tell Ryan (and whoever else is interested) that the Bloodthirsty Lovers kind of sound like The Russian Futurists in a way.. only not as lo-fi. At least the album I have.. not sure about the new one...

beard contest
» As I have received a few messages regarding this, I suppose I should make it official. There will not be a 2004 Beard Contest. Aside from the fact that I just have too full of a plate to put together the actual mini-site, I am just not far enough removed from the monstrosity that I had last year. I am sorry to all those who wanted to participate this year but I just can't make it happen.

» I can't say that I'm entirely surprised but it appears that Six Feet Under is done after next season. I think that 3rd season hump kind of killed any viewership that they had built up..

rare saturday post
» The rare Saturday post.. mostly due to the fact that I really don't want to go out and run a bunch of errands today.

- New Black is pretty enjoyable to listen to. They are playing a house party tonight on Villa and I kind of expected some crap, but turns out that it could be a total gem.

- Saw Coffee and Cigarettes last night. Was a good film but not really what I was expecting. The acting was mostly bad, the dialogue was certainly stiff, but the subject matter was pretty amusing. The repetition of ideals coming back in different conversations was strange but worked. Most of the vignettes were entertaining despite the weird acting - GZA/RZA with Bill Murray was strange, Jack and Meg White were certainly stiff but pretty funny by the end, Iggy Pop and Tom Waits are good at being awkward.. maybe too good.. but the best was probably William Rice and Taylor Mead, I don't know why but I really enjoyed their conversation.

Batteries Plus really does have all your battery needs fulfilled.

The Reverend is coming along.. hopefully it will all make sense by end of next week.

» If you combine Origami and Illusion you will find the a Grand Illusion that is fairly mind blowing. Yea, it's an optical trick but the first few times you view the video I'm sure you will literally crap your pants (yes, literally).

my new digi-cam (kind of)
» I've been yearning for a new digital camera for awhile now.. I purchased Bens old Fujifilm 4900 awhile ago and it has amazing picture quality, great range, and overall was a solid purchase. However, it's just a tad bulky for just having with me and, ya know, taking photos. So I've got my eye on the Panasonic DMC-FX7. It's got 5 megapixels, some sort of anti-shaky-hand technology, a Leica lens, and a giant LCD on the back. Anyone have any good / bad experience with Panasonics digital camera line?

what the BLEEP
» I saw What The Bleep Do We Know!? last night and I can't say that I'm any more enlightened now than I was before viewing it. Basically the movie is a uber-scientific version of I Heart Huckabee's - take out the funny plotline, the twists, the Jason Schwartzman, and replace it all with quantum physics and extremely dense material that is probably so lofty you'll never really grasp it. I can't say I wasn't in agreeance with all of it but there was some science of the body regarding addictive behavior that was pretty cool. I recommend seeing it, but make sure you've had a lot of rest beforehand.. otherwise you may find yourself falling asleep.

Episode III
» Supposedly ComingSoon.net has the new Star Wars : Episode III trailer but I'm sure you can find it other places. Please allow me to nerd out momentarily.. the film looks like it will be action packed goodness, but the teaser poster is pretty ridiculously bad and I can't help but have some misgivings about large flocks of Wookies fighting (ala Return of the King). How can I make this post more nerdy? My pocket protector just broke!

electoral vote
» Even though it's over, the Electoral Vote Predictor site has some cool post-election data showing a nice breakdown of the country. It is very interesting to see that the more urban area's were Kerry, the more rural Bush (no surprise). My favorite part are the random counties throughout the nation that are a lone blue in a sea of red - i.e. Davidson in TN.

webhost retardation
» Is there a webhost in existence with a decent control panel? I've experienced a few that were decent, a few that were gawd-awful, and some that were so incoherent that it wasn't even worth bothering to figure out. Why can't a host make a CP that's fast, easy to use, and well laid out?

shirts
» There is a fine line between being a somewhat stupid kitschy t-shirt, and being a kind of rad weird avant-garde t-shirt. Fortunately, these Beeftown Shirts kind of ride along that line and manage to stay just weird enough.. seriously, look at this or this. Link via Chad.

keyboard
» I love it when someone spends a bunch of time inventing something that they are sure will take off and be a boon to the world of technology but just ends up being bizarre and unlikely to gain popularity beyond its home on the web. Case and point - the Maltron Keyboard - sure it's being marked to the special needs groups of the world so it will probably be okay.. but sheesh.. this thing is weird.

my t610 - rad
» Sony Ericsson T610 Mac users should probably check out Blue Phone Menu - a little software program that integrates itself into OS X and creates loads of interaction between your phone and your machine. Huge on screen caller id, pausing iTunes when a call comes in, or whatever AppleScript you want. Pretty sweet...

the final word
» Well, I can't say I'm surprised about this but I can say that I'm severely disappointed. My only hope now is that the election woke up some of this country to the fact that they can, and need to, pay attention to the government. I hope that the lack of fear of re-election will not give just cause for the Administration to go nuts.

November 2nd approaches
» I would feel rather irresponsible if I didn't mention the fact that November 1st marks the eve of a rather important Election Day. It has been discussed here many times before and it is fairly obvious that none of my readers fall into the "undecided" category of voters; I respect that we all know where we stand and have our own vision for the future of this country.

I hate that the election has boiled down to the War in Iraq with just small pepperings of domestic policy but thats the way it is. So be it. Strangely, we've heard from both sides over and over that both of them will 'hunt down and kill the terrorists' with the only exception being that Kerry feels like the invasion of Iraq should have been handled different. Again, a moot point as we are there and neither candidates election will change that - both will keep troops there and both will do what they can to keep our troops safe (I don't want any arguments about past voting, this is the future I am talking about.. Kerry can't afford to not be 100% supportive).

So when you wake up tomorrow and you go to the polls I hope you are sound in your decision. Even though I love Nader's public speaking ability and many of his ideals, I would agree that he's lost it a little bit. Most people won't even be given the chance to vote for Badnarik if they wanted to, so he's kind of out of the picture. So it really is down to John Kerry or George Bush.

I will agree that Bush is extremely strong in his convictions and may honestly think that he is making the world a safer place but if you are going to the polls based on security please remember the lesson our country supposedly learned in Vietnam. You can not win a war against insurgents on foreign soil. People will always revolt. I hope that the Iraqi elections go smoothly in January and the US is politely asked to leave but if not, try to consider how it is that the US is going to 1) pay for the war (if Bush wins he's asking for a lot more money in December) and 2) make peace there. If you think you can force peace on anyone you got another thing coming. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

If you are voting based on issues beyond the war then I support you in whomever you choose. This is a great country where we can all have our own ideas and it is our job as citizens to voice our opinion. Whatever you do tomorrow, let your voice be heard (even though it may be out of your hands). I know this sounds overly cheesy but I have extreme concern for the results of tomorrow (though technically the results aren't in until mid-December.. don't let that get robbed again.. please). The news media wants you to believe that this is the most important election of our generation and it may very well be. It's no surprise that the school bully often ends up working at a gas station while the nerdy kid who wants to keep to his own ends up leading successful corporations.

Sorry for this officially being the 'Longest Post Ever' but that's just how important I think this whole thing is. I promise I'll go back to posting oddities soon enough.
