December 31, 2004
happy new year » Here's the last entry for 2004. I really wanted to launch a new splash page tonight with a few bits of bare information and maybe a hint of a tease of things to come. As you can see, it didn't happen. This week has been suprisingly busy, especially given that I didn't really even go into work. First off, I finally launched the new Count Bass D site. I am rather proud of it (even though I realize it still needs tweaks all over the place). I hope you all enjoy it as well.. it seems to contain a wealth of information. I had every intention of cleaning out my inbox today and starting a 2005 list of "Projects to Consider" but I didn't get around to it. For those of you awaiting emails from me, they'll be in the Outbox tomorrow.. sorry about that. I hope everyone enjoyed 2004 as much as I did. There were a few rocky moments (potentially sharing a bed with Ryan in New York was one of them) but I am rather astounded at the amount of stuff that I got done this year, the new friends I made, and the bonding with old ones. 2005 looks to be pretty great, I just hope I can keep up. Thanks for reading everybody.. I'll be back early next week and hopefully have a nice little start on changing things around here. |

December 24, 2004
merry christmas » Well folks. This is it. Official vacation time. I hope you all enjoy it and have a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Gelukkige Vzksnsies, Mele Kaliki Maka, Sheng Tan Kuai Loh, Mboni Chrismen, Rozdjestvom Hristovim, etc. etc. I'll be attending to family duties, quality time with friends, and a wee bit of rest and relaxation. I'll be back next week some time to remind you of the wonderful things you are missing on the internet. Take care. |

December 23, 2004
my record company is jerking me » Christmas countdown.. Day 4. Honestly, I've kind of run out of things to offer. Fortunately, others have not. Head over to the official Count Bass D site and download the hard-to-find Spongebath Records release "Art For Sale." The disc is good for fans of hip-hop and people who aren't so keen on it. It's just good music. If you're hesitant, go snag "Fat Girl" or "Beno" and try and convince me you don't like it. |
harrison launch » Merry Christmas to me - The new George Harrison site just launched. Rad team effort on this one.. very nice results. Now it feels like vacation! |
amazing masks » The full-headed ski mask is not a fashion statement I've ever understood but after seeing these things I'm a bit more keen on the idea. I mean, that last one is probably the creepiest thing I've seen in awhile. |
cloning pets » Okay, I read this article about how some woman paid $50,000 to have her favorite pet cloned. At first I wasn't bothered by the idea and thought - hey, it's your money! But upon further reading you discover that cloned animals do not look or act the same as their originals, they are their own independent creatures but are MORE prone to poor health. So. Did this woman just fall for the most amazing scam of the century (i.e. find any stray cat and present it as the clone) or are people seriously spending ridiculous amounts of money to have a pet made for them when they could just get a new one (after coping with the emotional strain of losing a beloved pet)? I am flabbergasted. |
blitz » Basically everything I'm posting today is coming from Ryan because it snowed/iced here last night and I'm not really spending much time browsing (but Ryan lives in Arizona, so he's got time to spare.. get it.. heat = browsing time). BUT because there are links to be shared.. check out this new KAWS video featuring his bomb toys. So cute yet so menacing. |
burlesque » Check out Burlesque Design for a pleathora of graphic design treats. The Eyedea & Abilities CD artwork is pretty amazing but I think I was drawn in by this screenprinting process.. pretty amazing. Via Nick. |
mimes » Check this out to read about former Bogota mayor Antanas Mockus. Sounds boring? This guy hired 400+ mimes to mimick people in the streets who were improperly crossing or just disobeying rules. He put a voluntary lock-in decree on men for three nights so that women could have their own nights out. Politics + Art / Humor = effective? Who knew? |
pop-up » Check out the most amazing pop-up book you'll ever witness. To some degree the impressive nature stems from the photography and presentation but either way.. they are quite detailed and a nice play on the traditional style. |
December 22, 2004
top ten 2004 » Day 3 of the Christmas countdown.. here's what I have to offer. It's my Top Ten of 2004 - top ten CD's that is. I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm missing some obvious entry but I'm fairly happy with everything that I picked. I can't recommend Arcade Fire, Autolux, Menomena, or Detachment Kit enough. Actually, almost all of the top 10 is something that everyone should own - hence the reason that they are in the top ten. |
stay in and do it » It's like a mini-Winter mix series - here is a mix from Jeremy Davis with possibly the best title of any mix. Don't forget about my mix, lee's mix, or the Punctuate.net Christmas Remix Collection. |
santy » Apparently there is a new web virus that is exploiting Google and phpBB forums. As annoying as it is for some hosts you gotta respect the fact that someone finally found a way to exploit the immense power of google for evil. |
The Features - Xmas song » Well I'll be damned.. The Features have a Christmas song up on iTunes (direct link here). |
sufjan christmas » Apparently someone put together a Sufjan Stevens Christmas album. I would bet that the second track isn't actually him, or his band, but it's an entertaining song regardless. Everything else sounds right.. and might allow for a nice breakup from the standard holiday onslaught of Rudolph songs. Thanks Bryan. |
best xmas image ever » Woah.. check this pic. Hands down the best holiday themed picture I've seen in a long time. |
December 21, 2004
christmas countdown » Day 2 of the Christmas Countdown (hopefully I can keep up with the treats) is a treat from me to you. Go download my winter mix. It's a fair balance of new and old songs - but mostly songs that remind me of winter. Let me know your thoughts and keep holding your breath for another treat tomorrow. |
interpol - evil » Via Stereogum I caught the new Interpol video for "Evil" and I have to wonder - what the hell were they thinking? Why take a serious song with a seriously dark tone to it and have your video feature a mostly awkward puppet? Is this just a European version of the video? Maybe it's trying to be tongue-in-cheek or something but it fails miserably. Way to go guys. |
90 from the 90's » Speaking of Ronnie, there is only one week left to submit your list for his 90 from the 90s list. I've been trying to think of what I consider the top 10 Songs of the 1990's and its rather difficult.. a decade contains a TON of songs. And do you pick the songs that kind of define the generation? Or just songs that you really enjoyed? |
160676 » I'm sorry but this Asimo video is killing me. The transition from walk to run is like an intense "creeping." Thank you Ronnie. |
mailbag: 12/21/04 » Random mailbag links: VW Bus Concept Redesign - pretty cool looking body design (even for a Bus) but the insane amount of additives and random little tweaks to the car is off the chart. A captains chair that doubles as a ladder through the extended sunroof? What? Cubicle People - it's like Lego meets Dilbert. Kind of a funny gift for your friends stuck in the drudge of corporate life. Habitat has a collection of nice illustrations. I prefer the more vector based intricate stuff rather than the crayola style musings. |
photos on grass » Amazing art link for the day comes from Ryan.. check out Ackroyd and Harvey and their "Photos On Grass." Sounds mediocre at first but think about this - taking a plot of grass, shining a controlled amount of light on it through a negative so that the grass takes on different tones - creating a photorealistic image. A photo on grass is kind of amazing scientific experiment mixed with amazing art presentation. More can be read about it here and here. I can't get over how nuts of a concept that is and the execution is fantastic. |
space invaders update » Looks like Space Invaders has a new book - Invasion LA. Looks as good as his last.. maybe I should actually buy it this time. Or maybe I should just break down and get the Space shoe... |
December 20, 2004
last year » It's hard to believe that this time last year I was rockin this... seems like a long time ago. The 2005 Beard Contest has already been discussed.. gears are turning.. now I just gotta get excited about having a giant beard. |
links.. left and right! » Amazing links are coming at me from all sides today.. unfortunately I don't have a ton of time to spend browsing them. Here's a taste: Check the work of Daren Rabinovitch. His work can be seen in The Life Aquatic and the Fecal Face interview has a lot of samples. Definitely surreal, sometimes a bit grotesque, but always keen to detail and interesting to look at. Link via JD. |
LWC Mix 21 » The countdown to Christmas has begun.. your first treat comes from Lee in the form of a new mix - A Family Affair. The tracklisting is comprised of artists that he is friends with (and therefore endorses). Typically recommending music based purely on friendships is a recipe for disaster but I'm about 10 tracks in and so far everything has been quality. Yewknee endorsement in effect. |
taxidermy » I think creative taxidermy is my new favorite form of artistic expression. Check out Custom Creature Taxidermy for examples of why I feel this way. Obviously the Griffin is amazing but a winged squirrel isn't too shabby either. I wonder if lots of people are doing this or just Sarina Brewer. |
poodle fitness » My jaw was on the floor the entire time I watched Poodle Fitness.. I wish I could explain it but I can't. I'm just amazed. |
free fiona » Some Fiona Apple fans have started FreeFiona.com in an attempt to persuade Sony/Epic to release her album Extraordinary Machine. Will this have any affect on the gigantic conglomerate machine? Nope.. but maybe you're into signing petitions and this could fill a void in your life. Good to see that people are trying to do something but I'm not sure the power of the people can be too effective on this one. |
trillian » Daniel showed me the new version of Trillian and I must admit that it looks nice.. very nice. But I've not met someone yet who uses it and doesn't experience a whole host of file transfer and direct connect problems with it.. not worth it. |
December 17, 2004
count bass d » Count just showed me this and this.. which blew my mind because I made those shirts and they are selling for about $30 USD.. and you can very plainly see in the detail photos that my ink coverage wasn't 100%.. insanity. Some random Japanese Count Bass D fans are wearing shirts that I made.. surreal. |
work work work » Can't do the "browse for a few hours" thing today at work fellas.. got way too much work to finish before the Christmas holiday. SO, now it's your turn. Give me something interesting to look at.. here's some stuff from Ryan. Revolving Building Nude Photography but not like what you're thinking.. unless you're thinking about circuit boards and wires, in which case we may need to have a talk.. Inappropriate Crotchet Items - if you thought this was hilarious and amazing, then you'll love it. Otherwise you may be off put by the yarn mammaries. |
alternative apparel » Has anyone ever purchased from Alternative Apparel? Looks very similar to American Apparel but I've heard the shirts fit a bit differently... |
December 16, 2004
imagefed » I feel like I do this a lot but there's a new Imagefed and it's amazing.. it's "just" a holding page for something bigger and better down the line but this latest piece is nuts. Loads of illustration, crazy depth, and just general nutiness. Lame to say impressive as always but it's almost a given that new Matt Curry works are gonna be great. |
perry bible fellowship » I viewed the entire archive of the of Perry Bible Fellowship - a bizarre comic strip. How anyone can not enjoy Sgt Grumbles is beyond me. Many thanks to Chad for the link. |
random browsings 2 » Random crap I browsed today: Toy Camera gallery- mostly Holga or LOMO stuff.. but lots of galleries, some of these double exposures are nuts... and kind of amazing. Paper clock - it's paper, it's a clock.. it's a paper clock! Flexible LCD / LED's are on the way. Neen and Neen Today are pretty interesting. What are they? Some sort of art collective, so your guess is as good as mine. Worth checking Neen for the random logo types and the weird little toolbox navigation. See also Whitney Biennial for some sort of intense crest collection / portfolio. ODB died of an accidental overdose of cocaine and Tramadol (prescription painkiller). Is anyone actually surprised? Have I mentioned that this book makes me drool? Strangely, I was browsing the YWFT books and I'm not sure if people would really enjoy these things as gifts. They make great coffee table books but do people really sit down and read these things? Either way, they can be inspiring... |
apple store » According to this site it appears that Apple is considering a store here in Nashville. I'd be surprised if it happened but kind of cool. |
high ball society » Check the Highball Society for some cool photography (like this, or this, or this) and some nice links. Via Lee. |
reverend rainbow 2 » Speaking of Reverend Rainbow, I think everyone should be aware of the fact that Medium and X-Large shirt sizes are now available (as well as a few girl shirts). We've added the size options to the shirts page so you can actually specify what size you want (instead of relying on an email inquiry) and we'll be adding a News page and some other goodies over the weekend. |
crown dozen love » Not that it needs to be done but I gotta give some additional love to Crown Dozen - their threadless interview is great, they continue to post great stuff like this guy, and even put Reverend Rainbow in their T-Love section. Thanks guys. |
December 15, 2004
japanese » As if you needed more proof that the Japanese were both insane and completely honorable in their crafts... check out these fruit carvings - there are pages and pages of them (this one in particular blew me away). Then check this pleathora of Japanese vending machines. I've also heard tale of robot crane arms (like what we use to win stuffed animals) scooping down to pick up live lobsters and turtles to take home as pets. Our country needs more stuff like that. |
just watch the sky » Goodness gracious, Just Watch The Sky is a beautifully designed site. Nice use of color, good grid pattern going on, nice text, etc. etc. And ya know what? It's got great content too.. thanks Daniel, now I know what yewknee.com can strive for. |
links galore » Some random links for you: Fyadhaus - a collection of bizarre, strange, somewhat low brow animations. Worth looking at for a few moments if you're in the right mood (though this thing is amazing). Via Hale via Davis. Beverage News - looks like Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper is coming soon. I don't drink much soda these days but this may turn the tides and become all I drink... ever. Weezer Story - interesting excerpt from the story of Weezer but mostly just amazing for the insanely ridiculous picture of Rivers Cuomo with hair down to his ass. |
HotColorThisYear » Woah, check out Hot Color This Year - not only is the portfolio pretty much great through and through but the Free Hot Color Forecaster takes all the guesswork out of next years upcoming color trends. So handy. No, seriously, it's a great portfolio and for some reason I'm even more impressed that it's a local designer (part of the Breakstation Creative crew). |
start to finish - plastic kid » Rad play by play at the Plastic Kid site of him creating a very nice (and quite large) wall decoration. Paint, photography, stenciling, and much more.. amazing what all can go into one piece. |
December 14, 2004
6ize » Good mp3 blog over at 6ize - nice to see a Turing Machine entry. Overall, the blog isn't as obscure as many of the others I have seen and somehow that is settling to me.. |
random browsings » Random browsings... the podFolio - I'm not sure if this is a clever and original portfolio or just a kind of lame and awkward rip of the iPod interface. Either way, it's a site! Ivan Cook portfolio - very simple site.. not much there.. but for some reason I really enjoy the Satelight comp.. Baseline Magazine looks pretty cool.. I need to try and round up an issue around here. |
life aquatic » People are starting to seeThe Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and it's killing me having to skip over reviews, tidbits, and random blurbs about the movie. In fact, I'm not even enabling comments on this post because someone is bound to leave some feedback possibly ruining the whole thing! I hope I get into the sneak peek tomorrow otherwise the wait will destroy me. |
80gb » Looks like an 80gb iPod is on the horizon. I've yet to fill up my 40 but I can't deny that having that much storage in such a small device is appealing. |
blockbuster video.. WOW what a difference » It appears that Blockbuster video is dropping late fees on all of their rentals. Now you get a week grace period to return your item and if you miss it, you are charged for that item (they assume you want to own it). Not a bad deal for those of us that were constantly tricked by their "due in 5 days at noon" policy. |
batman.. BEGIN » Go watch the new Batman trailer and see what you think. Looks to be pretty good based on the very quick little look we get at some of the back story and action sequences. The best part? How amazingly cheesy they can be and still have it appeal to the inner geek in me.. the dialogue between Batman foe's and the man himself is sure to be hysterical. |
robbie lists » Robbie has listed his "Top 10 Songs That Yielded Albums Of Lesser Quality 2004" and for the stuff that I've heard.. I agree. Bjork, Ted Leo, and Blonde Redhead all had my expectations up (okay, not Ted Leo so much) and then when I heard the full albums I was a bit disappointed. They grew on me but it was still a let down. I might add The Faint to that list but I wasn't so into the first song I downloaded and then ended up actually enjoying the album. |
December 13, 2004
oddities » Oddities for the day: Young Girl Plays Xylophone - she's not looking at what she's doing, she's amazing, and kind of creepy. More weirdness at Rob Pongi. eBay Auction - for Gay Time Painting Book featuring an illustration of a kid painting while getting roughed up by a goat with a possible redneck pervert watching in the background. Words can't do this one justice. Haliburton Hires Columbian Gunmen - not so much hilarious but just weird. US companies love to outsource. |
MAILBAG: 12/13/04 » Here's some random links.. not much time to browse today due to a load of work that is due soon and the fact that my fingers are absolutely freezing in the office. Google Suggest - kind of awesome, kind of weird. Jevich Photolog - street art from Moscow in the form of a photo log. ISO 50 has t-shirts now.. some good lookin threads. Being Charlie Kaufman - site full of interviews, articles, insights into Charlie Kaufman. I need to spend some more time here. Music Thing is a blog for the music geek. I don't mean the type of music geek that just listens to music, I mean the type that is down with an open conversation about White synthesizers vs. Black synthesizers. Buy Blue - find out where your favorite retailer sent large chunks of contribution money. If you're really willing to boycott a store just because their CEO's donated to the Republican party then have fun shopping at Electronics Boutique and Costco. |
no more FC » According to their site, it seems that Forget Cassettes have parted ways. Definitely sucks as their new stuff was pretty interesting and taking things to a new level. I guess we just gotta see what Beth gets into next... |
holgaroid » Woah, big thanks to BeN FrAnK for the link to the Holgaroid. I'm not sure I'd pay $99 for such a device but the fact that it exists means that I can probably find it cheaper somewhere. |
movies » What is happening to movies? Why is Oceans Twelve top of the box office? Why is there Magneto movie being made? Or Saw 2!? Remakes, sequels, and spinoffs - who needs original ideas anymore? |
weekend roundup » Went to see Primer again this weekend. It's certainly better the second time through as you pick up on some of the more subtle hints dropped earlier in the movie. Does the movie make sense to me now? No, absolutely not. Aside from that I was just in a daze of shopping for birthday and Christmas gifts. Sometimes you can't get the goods online and you have to venture out to random stores to find what they have to offer.. this is entertaining for about a half hour. Got to hang with Mason and his lady for a bit this weekend too.. was good to hang out with him without the presence of sticker stars, green paint, or tinfoil. He's actually sane (not that you would know it from the looks of it). For anyone not watching Arrested Development religiously I am very ashamed of you. I agree that TV as a whole isn't that great, but this show is worthy of the praise. |
December 10, 2004
Hale Links : Volume 15 » Hale Links: Volume 15 Old Anatomy Drawings - I promise I will be stealing some of these and recycling them for my own artistic needs. Some amazing illustrations here. I really love medical style illustrations. Gallery Shop - buy a Jeff Soto piece! Gift Guide addendum worthy for sure. Paper Lampshade - sounds lame by the title but when you turn the light on more of the image is revealed. The Zoo and City pieces are my favorite but none of them are to be missed (Bank Robbery and Hunter pieces are great.. Lee knows what I'm talking about). Worst Tattoo Ever - truth be told I got this link awhile ago from someone else but seeing it again reminds me how shameful and embarrassed I feel for the guy that actually got HTML permanently inked into his body. Deleted Team America Sex Scenes - I have yet to see the movie but I can imagine the scenes that were cut are pretty amazing. iPod Image Hack - which you can read a lot more about here. Very cool hack and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before people start swapping iPod image packs to customize them (think iPod themes). If only it didn't have to wipe the harddrive to do it... |
JD links : Volume 2 » JD links: Volume 2 Kristi Ropeleski - some great paintings here, the Blood Harmony series is pretty cool - especially the 3.1 image. Francois Escalmel - maybe not work appropriate but some seriously great works here. The majority of them have some sexual going on but it just adds to the bizarreness. The site itself has a nice layout for those of you not so interested in paintings but moreso in the presentation of content (great Flash menu for the paintings too). Echoes Location - new journal for JD... someday he'll leave LiveJournal but for now it's good to be able to keep up with his findings. Galaxia Gifts - will be added to the Gift Guide addendum coming this next Monday. Submit your links now so you don't feel left out. |
war of the worlds » The War of the Worlds Teaser Trailer is online and it looks like it could be for Independence Day 2. |
digital sucks » Call them Luddites or just call them purists but the people behind Digital Sucks love their film cameras.. fortunately they are willing to share the results and some of them are quite nice. |
holga 35mm » Apparently the LOMO Society now has a 35mm Holga - that takes pictures that look just like a Lomo. Not sure what the point is here but I guess it has some benefits that I am just ignorant of. The lack of insane vignette and the fact that it costs $55 (cheap for a Lomo brand) makes me want to stick with the cheap version.. it gives some great results. |
December 09, 2004
fantasy interfaces » While I don't absolutely love the design of the Fantasy Interactive site I have to give them props for the keen attention to detail in their site. The dynamic right-click functionality and the browsers back button works between sections. Definetly a big plus in terms of usability.. something I'll have to research more. Anyone have any experience with either of these things? |
charlie and the chocolate factory » Just finished watching the new trailer for the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You know what? I have no opinion on this one - the childhood memories to the film don't really exist for me so the remake doesn't really affect me. As long as it's better than Monkeybone we should be okay. |
thank you interweb » Big thanks to the author of this site and this site for providing such a pleathora of George Harrison information... it certainly came in amazingly handy today. The internet is great in case anyone was still on the fence. |
deal me in! » I will always trust Jamie to hit me up with the best deals.. such as DealMeIn.net. Basically the same thing as Bens Bargains but ya know.. a different site. |
kaufman » Interesting (though ultimately uninformative) article about Charlie Kaufman and his writing process. I'd like to read some more interviews with him, anyone got any links handy? |
December 08, 2004
discover snowball fight » The Discover Card Gift Finder site has a rad game of "Snowball Fight" you can play across the interweb. It's tough but entertaining. |
santa mosh » I thought it was going to be another stupid web video (and it is) but I couldn't stop myself from laughing at Santa Mosh - that guys ability to throwdown in the biggest way is pretty amazing, especially in a Santa suit. |
steve zissou » ComingSoon.net has a behind the scenes featurette right here on The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. I'm not going to watch anything about the film until it's out and has been viewed by my own eyes but there are some of you out there that may want to give it a whirl. |
deadsy v2 » New site for Deadsy and their album Phantasmagore. It's kind of cryptic and weird but mostly just kind of lame. I suppose I shouldn't expect much more from them but I'd always hoped they wouldn't become a parody of themselves. Also, no real new information - just kind of a new design slapped together. |
December 07, 2004
ascii site » Maybe it's the novelty of it but the Horny Chicken Club site is kind of spellbinding to me. The mp3 and video pages in particular just seem to have a certain something about them. Yea, it's ASCII and sure.. the artwork page is alarming yet humorous but I still enjoy it. |
skeletal systems » Check out the Skeletal Systems artwork of Michael Paulus. He's desconstructed the likes of Hello Kitty, Pikachu, Powerpuff Girls, and other random cartoon characters to show their skeletal makeup - pretty awesome. The server is somewhat slow but the wait is worth it. |
super perfect hair part 2 » New propaganda at Super Perfect Hair and they are still amazing. T-Shirts need to be for sale.. soon. Such a great site. |
5 mistakes » Check out this list of 5 Mistakes commonly made by bands and labels - covering topics like too much Flash on a website, no mp3 metadata, too artsy, etc. I agree with the Flash drawback of no deep linking, the lack of mp3 info being a real problem, and having a clear communication method but I can't agree with the "too artsy is bad" comment. Sure that would be bad for the new Lindsay Lohan disc but someone like Detachment Kit has a somewhat "artsy" site and I think it's rather easy to get around and fun to explore. It's a good read for sure - for both musicians and web designers (and god help you if you're both). Link via Ryan. |
gift guide » The 2004 Gift Guide is up and available for all. It's really just a giant list of e-retailers but it could possibly help you on your shopping endeavours. Plus you get to skip the lines this way. |
December 06, 2004
more links for the day » Just so I'm not leaving everyone out in the cold for the day.. here's some random links: exopolis - design firm portfolio. Enjoyable layout, smooth and interesting transitions, and a bunch of cool work to look at. A couple of threads (here and here) attempting to explain the completely bizarre plotline of Primer. Movie Mistakes - pointing out that in The Neverending Story when Artax (the horse) drowns in the quicksand.. he really drowns. Sad but true. Street Snowboarding - but without the snow, the snowboards, or the inclimate weather. Kind of nuts. Gift Guide tomorrow.. too many distractions today. |
updates » Little to no browsing time today.. but I am working on the Gift Guide (with Ryan) when I get a few open moments. So submit your favorite sites to buy stuff and maybe they'll make it on the list. |
movie weekend 2 » Yet another movie filled weekend (somehow). Dr. Strangelove - I'd never seen it before and rather enjoyed it. Peter Sellers is pretty incredible and I certainly recommend this to anyone. I guess that kind of goes without saying though. Network - loads of dialogue so I wouldn't sit down to watch this one at 12:30 at night (like I did) but it's kind of amazing how pertinent some of the rants are to today's society. The TV exec screaming about there being no democracy, only the ideals of money and capitalism in particular was dead on. The love story subplot was aggravating as it was pretty much completely unnecessary. Primer - hailed as along the lines of "Donnie Darko" and "the headiest, most singular science-fiction movie since Kubrick made 2001" but ya know what? I had no idea what was going on. Much like ole Donnie Darko you have to see it, research what was going on, and then see it again. I would reveal more but then you'd be more informed than I was going into it and that would ruin the fun now wouldn't it? The Life & Death of Peter Sellers came on HBO last night and wrapped the weekend up. It was a decent film but certainly not a fantastic biopic or anything.. though I am interested in seeing a lot more from Peter Sellers. |

Blue » 528 songs into the iPod and we're only on "Blue." How many songs / artists can you name with that title? There's at least 4 that I know of... |
i caved » I caved in and bought a subscription to the Josh Rubin Gift Guide from Cool Hunting. I'm not entirely disappointed but there certainly could be a ton more items for my $8. So I am officially requesting everyone post a site / gift idea that contains a lot of online goods - I am working with Ryan to compile our own little gift guide to debut on Monday - it won't be anything crazy intense but it should prove to be handy. |
exotic guitar » If I played guitar I would own one of these. Specifically the Folk Legend because hey.. that thing is amazing. |
modest mouse » Just bought tickets for Modest Mouse and they were amazingly set at $30, plus a Ticketmaster convenience fee, plus shipping. So I just paid roughly $40 for one ticket. Redonkulous. |
December 02, 2004
relive the 90's with ronnie brown » Okay, Ronnie has requested that everyone go check out 90 from the 90s - The BIG List.. his latest project of compiling what everyone thinks are the top 10 favorite songs of the 90's. I believe the history here involves being beat down with best of lists, best of TV specials, and healthy arguing between friends.. so help out some mates and submit your list. I'm compiling mine at the moment. |
Masters of Deception » The work of Shigeo Fukuda walks the line between rather amazing and looking good on paper but not in practice. The servers are fairly slow but the "Lunch With a Helmut On" piece is certainly worth viewing... actually all of the Shadow Sculptures are great but I have my reservations about some of the 3D models like "Cat/Mouse" that would be much more impressive if they weren't just computer models. |

gift guide » The Josh Rubin: Gift Guide looks intriguing but I'm not sure I'm ready to shell out $8 for a list of links of places to buy other stuff. I like the majority of things listed at Cool Hunting but couldn't there be some sort of affiliate program at work to help pay for this side project? If anyone does end up getting it, let me know if it's worth it (even though it really is only a measly $8). |

Dubya Movie » Everyone needs a few entertaining short films to watch throughout the day. Start with Dubya: The Movie - starring Don Knotts! It's well done and not entirely spiteful.. just a funny collection of classic Knotts clips compiled for a modern climate. Three people have sent me a link to McRorie - One Man Band so I guess everyone else needs to see it. Honestly, I am a little freaked out by this guy and not sure how I feel about a spandex-wearing, Highlander look-a-like with way too many techno gadgets for one person.. but it is amusing. |

12 sided calendar » I hope somehow that this 12 sided calendar can be integrated into the world of Dungeons & Dragons just to make it that much more ridiculous. If not, I will settle for the rhombic dodecahedron shown on the same page. |
Brothers Dioscuri » I'm nabbing this link from JD.. go check out the portfolio of Eric Baldwin. Lots of strong pieces, cool layouts, and the astroturf background for the individual pieces is a nice touch. |

keep bringing it robbie » He may not have posted in a little bit but when Robbie brings the goods.. he brings the goods. His post about this art event entitled There Is Nothing Wrong In This Whole Wide World certainly grabbed my attention. I'm attempting to send my SF co-horts down to check it out but judging from these pics I am fairly sure it's a sight to see. Re-organizing 20,000+ books to be sorted by color is nuts.. wonder how long it took. |
war of the worlds » Before the Speilberg / Cruise film War of the Worlds is released I really should re-read the book. I have a hard time envisioning this being done correctly but at least we're garuanteed a superfluous half-hour epilogue from Mr. Speilberg - it's his calling card. |

db0x wishes amir birthday pleasure » I must agree with Daniel and his birthday wishes to Amir (comrade in arms at Reverend Rainbow). Though my sentiment doesn't look near as cool as Daniel's. |
house of flying daggers » Matt showed me the trailer for House of Flying Daggers and I enjoyed it. Basically it is your standard gorgeous looking, epic-storyline, insane martial arts foreign film.. but is that really a bad thing? If you liked Hero or Crouching Tiger I'm not sure how you couldn't enjoy this. |
iPorn » Is the new iPod Photo anti-porn? If done intentionally that's kind of weird.. why does Apple care what kind of photos you store on there.. I mean, why else would you get one? |

qute 3 » The Firefox Qute theme is available for all you Firefox 1.0 users. Some people think it's too bubbly but I think it compliments Windows XP quite nicely. |
