Halloween Scares » Smooth Criminal Cover Concept Unification If anyone runs across any amazing costume images, drop a comment.. I'm always curious. |
Save The Album » It appears that Insound is now entering the world of digital retailers and selling albums online in mp3 format. No single song downloads and no DRM wrapped around the files. In an effort to market this fact they've created the movement Save the Album in which they asked various artists like Devendra Banhart, Colin Meloy (Decemberists), and The Walkmen to talk about their favorite albums. I, for one, fully support the notion that the album should continue to be a whole collection of songs, not just filler wrapped around 1 or 2 hit singles. |

English Russia » Recently I've become a daily reader of English Russia, a weblog of sorts that covers so many aspects of the Russian lifestyle that you rarely consider. Basically it's a "somewhat" poverty stricken country filled with alcoholism and a penchant for violence but there is also a ridiculous amount of gorgeous architecture and fascinating people. Certainly a good spot to keep an eye on the RSS feed. |
BODIES » I got to see the BODIES Exhibition this past weekend and was pretty blown away. If this thing ever comes anywhere close to you, I highly suggest going to see it. Granted, those of you that may be a little squeamish may not be too comfortable with the idea of cadavears filled with a plastic polymer to perfectly perserve them but the educational value of seeing just exactly what is going on inside of yourself is invaluable. |
Voting Errors » There have already been early reports that people participating in early voting are having some issues with the electronic voting. I'm sure that with any system there are going to be glitches but it seems that the running track record for these Diebold machines is less than stellar. There's a video project in progress that will film testimonials from people that are turned away from voting booths, experience errors with the printed output vs. what they entered, and broadcast it all on the web the same day. |
MoVember » Seeing as how Whiskerino won't start up again until November 2007 there may be a few people looking to grow some facial hair online - in which case you are welcome to participate in Movember. It's not a yewknee.com endorsed / sponsored event but I can't be everywhere that facial hair is being competitively grown (thankfully) so I suppose if you're in serious need, this is the place for you. Just remember - nothing beats Whiskerino or Moustache May.. we're the first and the best! |
Home from Vegas » I'm home from Vegas. I had a great time withRonnie & Claire, all the Scots, Ryan & Malisa, and Scott & Leigh but let me tell you something about Vegas.. no matter what hotel / casino you go into, it is all exactly the same. Sure The Bellagio has finer architecture than The Imperial Palace but it has the same cheesy slot machines, the same drunken gamblers, and the same stale air. It's all very airport-esque. Such a bizarre place. |

Sexy Costumes! » Girls's Costume Warehouse Update: The above video apparently is copyright to CollegeHumor.com.. and since their magic embed code doesn't seem to work, you'll just have to view the hilarity here. Totally worth it.. trust me. |
Hale Links : Volume 31 » Hale Links: Volume 31 In honor of my Vegas excursion this weekend with Mr. Hale, his wife, Mr. Harkey, his wife, Mr. Brown, his wife, and whatever strangers we meet along the way.. here is a big chunk of quality links. Your Face, Chinese Propaganda - MaoPost offers you the chance to be part of revisionistic history.. get yourself painted into some old propaganda art. TN Hangs Elephant - granted, it was in 1916 but I think it's safe to say events like this helped establish TN with the backwoods, redneck reputation it has today (and that whole Civil War thing). Don't click this - seriously. Just don't do it. If you can't resist, be warned that I seriously tried to get you not to click it. Probably NSFW and not safe for memories being burned into your brain but I'll be damned if it isn't absolutely insane (Chad, you should click it). Man falls in hole - and by falls in I basically means he's swallowed entirely by it. The image is hysterical. Pet Peek - if I had a pet and a fence, I'd have as many of these installed as I could afford. Grass Wheel - a lovely way to walk around the city reminscent of the PARK project. Dilbert Creator Battles Disease, Wins - the fact that he's the creator of Dilbert really doesn't factor in at all except for the fact that it led him to lose his voice, permanently. And now he's figured out a way to battle the disease that severed the ties in his brain that allowed him to speak regularly. A fascinating story really.. even if you hate Dilbert. |
6 Word Stories » While this is not something I would often associate with Wired, this article entitled Very Short Stories asks a plethora of authors to write stories comprised of just six words. It's actually quite impressive (and humorous) what all can be said with so little. Computer, did we bring batteries? Computer? - Eileen Gunn Gown removed carelessly. Head, less so. -Joss Whedon Machine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time - Alan Moore What's YOUR six word story? |
Flickr friends » Occasionally someone will add me as a friend on Flickr that I've never met, never read a comment from, or ever interacted with before. These people typically have some sort of great artwork or photography on their photostream. For example: Low Resolution - great illustration series of Ruffians, and some lomographic style photography like this one that just totally makes my day. Superclever - great series of dual portraits. Reminds me of Terry Richardson in a way but without the overt and debasing sexuality. The 6x9 Shots are beautiful too. Liza Corbett - great photos, great illustrations, great crafts. |
bit torrent success! » I think it is safe to say that my bitTorrent experience yesterday was a pleasant one. I now have The Office - Season 2, Venture Bros - Season 1 and three Freak Show episodes. Not bad for not doing much of anything at all. And now I'll be quite entertained on my plane trip to Vegas this afternoon. |

Stuck in vending machine » The story alone is like a childhood dream come true but the photo that goes right along with this article makes it all the more priceless. |
Hylozoists » Ryan recommended I check out The Hylozoists - a 10 piece instrumental band featuring members of The Weakerthans, Broken Social Scene, Final Fantasy, and others. That was good enough for me. I thought you might want to check it out as well (or just discover what a Hylozoist actually is). » The Hylozoists - Strait Is The Gate
stay the course » Stay The Course? Oh, and if you're a TN resident and plan on voting for Bob Corker on November 7th please please rethink that plan. Read about stuff like this in which his official ads debase his opponent with grotesque subtle racism. How anyone is towing the party line of being a conservative these days is beyond me. |
David Fincher - The Zodiac » Is it just me or does anyone else find it a bit odd that there is a Capote movie coming out when there was already a Capote movie released rather recently? They even seem to tell the exact same story. Even stranger than that is that there is a movie called The Zodiac about the San Francisco Zodiac serial killer directed by Alexander Bulkley that came out in 2006 now to be followed up by a new David Fincher film entitled Zodiac about (you guessed it) the San Francisco Zodiac serial killer. Only this one stars Jake Gyllenhaal. I don't get it. |
Excuse me.. but you're wrong » I couldn't help but overhear someone last night at the grocery store explaining the wonder and joy of the movie Memento, which then led into a mild rant about how fantastic Christopher Nolan is and all the other movies he's directed like Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and One Hour Photo. Oops, turns out Mark Romanek did that one but I was curious if it would have been rude to quietly interrupt the guy and correct him on his slip-up? Not that it matters who directed One Hour Photo but I felt like if he was going to be going on and on about how great Christopher Nolan is, he should probably get his filmography right. Would it have been so wrong? |
Big Spaceship Labs » Big Spaceship is no stranger to making great sites (i.e. that great site for Stranger Than Fiction) but they have also recently extended a helping hand to other developers with Big Spaceship Labs - a place to grab several Flash add-ons, classes, and view some ridiculous experiments like their Visualizer. Absolutely nuts. |
Mutant Faces » I think the Mutant Faces photo set is terribly ingenius. I mean, some of them are disgustingly perfect. I wish there were more! |
BitTorrent Extravaganza » Today is my first real foray into the world of BitTorrent. I came to the realization that my computer at home was sitting around doing nothing for 8 - 9 hours a day while I was at work and that's a lot of wasted bandwidth. So, in order to get my full moneys worth from Comcast I've got myself a BitTorrent Client, a few torrent feeds and I'm hopefully going to return home to a wealth of entertainment (mostly Freak Show and/or The Venture Bros for the time being). Anyone on a Mac interested in trying this out should probably nab Transmission - I hear it's got the smallest footprint while still readily doing the job. |

3 Important Images » The following three images are so fantastic for such very different reasons that I don't even want to attempt to explain them, rationalize them, or put them into any sort of context. One · Two · Three Just view them, love them, and thank me later. |
YouTube Amusement » Dane Cook Impression |
Very Funny Ads » I gotta give credit to TBS for putting together a pretty nifty site for their Very Funny Ads campaign. Basically it's all a big setup to get you to watch their Best Of show but until then you can watch tons of commercials within their slick and easy to use interface. YouTube and Google Video could both take a nod from the tasteful but not too stylized video controls. Good work TBS. |
Landslide Video » Absolutely amazing Landslide video. I've never seen anything like that in my entire life - not even in movies. Really bizarre. Be warned of the NSFW banner ad at the top. |
100 Percent » Check out the product designs over at 100%. Clever, amusing, and often quite practical designs are hard to come by but every single item offered here is great. Magnet Tack, Stand Umbrella, and Lamp/Lamp are the best in my opinion. Link via Luke. |

RIP Hedonistica » Rest In Peace Hedonistica. You will be missed.. even if you just consider yourself a portal that any 17-year-old could create (isn't that true of any website?). Now where am I going to get a filtered list of hilariously amusing videos? |
MacBook Pro » The MacBook Pro has been updated. Now available in 17" size and with a speedier Intel processor. Oh, and it comes standard with 2 gig of RAM. The inner nerd in me is drooling. |
Relative Theory - Halloween » Your Halloween party this year is going to kick ass - at least in terms of music. You've got my two mixes, the Experiment in Terror AND now Relative Theory have released their latest installment of the Relative Love Podcast, which just so happens to be incredibly creepy and Halloween based. The Aerogramme cover of "Thriller" makes the whole thing worth nabbing but you since you're already subscribed to the podcast (right?) you already knew about it. |
October 23, 2006
The Prestige » Caught a showing of The Prestige this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Christopher Nolan has, in my mind, firmly planted himself among the list of recent directors that have the chops to consistently put out great movies. Overall the movie made me want to learn more about Nikola Tesla but I won't discuss the film in too much detail here.. as that would spoil the enjoyment of actually watching it. |
Grave Songs » Lee had asked me to come up with a mix of my "all time favorite songs," compile them on to a CD entitled Grave Songs and then post it online. After much thought and turmoil I came up with a mix but do not claim 100% confidence in my selections being the most representative picks from my catalog of music and favorites. How do you pick a mere 80 minutes worth of music that represents your entire lifetime of listening to music? Your tastes are constantly changing and songs that were once of extreme importance to your daily schedule fall by the wayside. Regardless, I think everyone should check out the Grave Songs compilation of mixes and see what you think. My mix is available here. What would YOU put on your Grave Songs mix? |
Bravia Advert » There is a part of me that wants to believe this Bravia advertisement is completely real. Paint erupting from the earth, exploding from buildings in a rainbow of color, flooding abandoned housing are all so fantastical that I've opted not to question how much of it is digital and just convince myself that somehow every bit of it was executed completely perfectly. |
Brown Pixels » I have no idea how long this has been up (shows how good of a friend I am) but Ronnie Brown appears to have his own illustration portfolio. Fergus and Irving have been favorites of mine for awhile once I saw them posted elsewhere but there are a wealth of other other goodies that should be enjoyed. |
October 20, 2006
Whiskerino Inspired » As a direct influence from Whiskerino it appears that Mike Spanakis will be growing and showing for the next 100 days. So if you're feeling a void in your life for voyueristic facial hair growing you now have a new homepage. |
YouTube Video Removal » I can't say that reading that YouTube removed 30,000 videos is all that surprising given the amount of copyright infringement on the site. But isn't that sort of the allure of the whole thing? I have no interest in watching peoples personal videos (for the most part) but rather love to have a spot to catch up on a quick clip from The Daily Show, Conan O'Brien, or some other random TV / movie source without having to torrent the whole thing. |
TED Talks - Jeff Han » If you've seen Minority Report (the sort of halfway entertaining Steven Speilberg film with Tom Cruise) you inevitably remember the touch screen interface that they use fairly consistent in the police station. From the looks of this keynote speech by Jeff Han we aren't too far from seeing that technology in the real world. The interactive options are pretty great but I still have my doubts as to how it would boost productivity in a coding world. Regardless, seeing a photo collage or world map manipulated in 3D space with a few simple hand gestures is fascinating at the very least. |
Freegums shirts » KarmaLoop is now carrying FreeGums clothing which, apparently, is all about snakes this season. Even if some of them are a bit too kitschy at times I still respect the type style of shirts like this or the illustration style deployed on several of the shirts (especially the reversibles). Lots more from Freegums is available on the official site. Be sure to browse it for awhile. |
EarFeeder » Anyone willing to try out earFeeder and let me know what it's all about - please do so. I'm intrigued by the idea of a site that documents your favorite artists, scours the web for new music by them and then creates a dynamic RSS feed for you to always be up to date on the latest tunes. However, I am a little too paranoid to just dive right into a website where Step One is to "scan your hard drive for your favorite music!" |
Secret Wall Tattoos » I remember reading about Secret Wall Tattoo's some time ago but should have known that there is an entire site devoted to the tactic of removing art from motel / hotel walls, adding your own mark, and replacing the art. Unfortunately, most of the hidden art is only a small step up in terms of quality from the original art in most cases but that's a matter of opinion I suppose.. the idea is rock solid. |
October 19, 2006
Heiwa Alpha » I'm, supposedly, traveling from SF to Nashville today (airplan delays may change that) but in the meantime you should really spend some quality time with HEIWA ALPHA. Sure, the download time is next to astronomical but the resulting artwork and presentation is absolutely worth it. That turle castle creature made it worth it for me.. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. |

Team Treehouse Halloween mix » If my October mix AND my old Halloween mix aren't enough music for your spooky needs - I suggest downloading the Team Treehouse mix - An Experiment in Terror. From the looks of the tracklisting it would be an excellent addition to your Halloween mixes. |
Insane Video Effects » Did I post about this video for the British band Goose yet? The song is entitled "British Mode" and while it is enjoyable in itself, the video is what is so amazing about the band. The basic premise is the use of an Ames Window to create an optical illusion that the band interacts with - a mind twisting image to see at times. Added to that is the truly bizarre (and almost grotesque) twisting of the band members faces and bodies in 3D space. Basically there's no way I can accurately explain what is going on in the video and you just need to watch it immediately. |
FOUND - Contest and Letterman » FOUND Magazine is having a YouTube Contest in which they ask readers to make a video involving FOUND magazine and send it in to them. While this is all well and good, they couple the post with a clip that made me wonder - how long until someone puts out a DVD of found YouTube clips. Granted, the quality isn't that great and they probably couldn't get permission to resell the videos but I doubt that ever stopped TV Carnage from doing their thing. Oh, and I also suggest everyone watch FOUND Magazine founder Davy Rothbart on his Letterman appearance. |
Illustrators - Julie hill / Ruth Gwily » 80% is the portfolio of illustrator Julie Hill. Granted, the actual portfolio is down at the moment but the daily doodles / sketches / drawings / ideas are deep enough that you could spend a fair amount of time being in awe even without anything "official." Sketches like this are quite detailed and impressive in that they are just considered a sketch. The portfolio of Ruth Gwily is largely comprised of detailed, incredibly textured, somewhat surreal and bizarre realistic illusrations - like a pro-anorexic angel emerging from a laptop embracing the user (with a side of rice cakes). I love the style, color choices, and subtle textures to age the paper - giving it an air of age and almost a Found nature from some creepy manual long forgotten. |
Nex game » If you're looking to pass a little time, might I suggest playing a few rounds of Nex - a simple Flash based game where you control a businessman smashing through walls of ice. Mindless fun. |

Eat that Shark Jump! » Line Rider Die At The Slopes |
Raj Republican » I know next to nothing about The Apprentice or any of the people that have appeared on the show but if this article about an ex-cast member now running for Congress in Pennsylvania with immigration being his main platform (keep in mind that Pennsylvania isn't exactly a border state) is any indication of the wit and intelligence involved with such a show then I'm proud of my ignorance. |
Bill Murray attends party » One of the best headlines I've seen in awhile: Bill Murray attends student party, does dishes. Nuff said. |
SF arrival » Turns out I am in San Francisco today through Thursday. Linkage will be less than the average day as I catch up on some work and attend a meeting or two. Note to self: When having to arrive at the airport by 5:15AM, do not stay up until 2AM the previous evening. |
October 16, 2006
Bomb Merch » Typically I wouldn't really post about band merchandise but since I have a personal hand in the goods of How I Became The Bomb I will make an exception. Over on their official site the band now has their t-shirts for sale - both of which I hand-printed - and I can not recommend the "Epic Conundrum" shirt enough. It took me a long time to get the print detail crisp enough to print so much detail but it turned out great. For a super large version of what is printed on the shirt - go here. And the shirts are cheap! |
Grizzly Bear » I received the new album from Grizzly Bear last week and I am starting to feel terrible that I have a promo copy of it and didn't buy it. I'm enjoying Yellow House so much it doesn't seem right that I haven't given a few dollars back to the band (aka - the label) to show my appreciation. It is quite possible that this album will end up in the top ten of the year.. please check it out. » Grizzly Bear - On A Neck, On A Spit
» Grizzly Bear - Lullabye
Plrds » Blankenship posted about these cut-out Polaroids and how great of an effect it is / could be for some packaging. I couldn't agree more - absolutely beautiful work. |
Evan Almighty - most expensive comedy ever » You've got to register to read it but this LA Times article about the forthcoming sequel to Bruce Almighty, entitled Evan Almighty, is set to become the most expensive comedy ever made. Approximately $175 million is expected to be spent on the production alone and marketing expenditures should put it well into the $250 million mark. Whatever it costs for that beard to reach the masses is fine with me. |
Dove : From photo to billboard » From Dove - From Model To Billboard in 60 Seconds - a time lapsed movie showing the process of a model having her makeup / hair done to becoming a billboard. The creepy part, of course, being just how much she is airbrushed into becoming an entity that she really doesn't represent - body reshaped, eyes moved, neck stretched, etc. Something tells me that this particular process isn't abnormal either. |
Dreamhost Sucks » It's official, the extreme backlash against Dreamhost is here - namely at Dreamhost-Sucks.com. Scary to think that many people have had so many problems with the service. My fingers are still crossed that they've fixed their router issues and things will go back to 99% uptime. |
Open Tabs - Flickr toys, baby hitter, michigan stonehenge » EdwardLee's Photos - all of which are vinyl toys set in dramatic situations. Impressive, and sort of amusing, how dramatic shots like this or this look. Baby Swinger - absolutely horrible incident of a woman hitting a man with her baby. So terrible that it's sort of hard to imagine it even being real. Wally Wallington seems to have discovered the trick to building Stonehenge. I personally think there are still a few unanswered questions as to how the blocks were placed horizontally atop the vertical ones but the feat is impressive none the less (especially considering that he performed the feat with no modern tools). |

Video Roundup » Grind House Trailer - NSFW-ish El Santo Incredible Mouth Band |
Hydra redesign » New site and portfolio up for Hydra Studio. Be sure to check the, rather enormous, Demo Reel along with the rest of their portfolio. |
Monsieur T » The new season of Monsieur T. has been released and I find myself asking - why don't I own any of their shirts yet? I mean look at all of these! Oh, and these two are even on sale. I'm still kicking myself for not getting this design when it was available on a tee. |
Tenacious D tour » Looks like Tenacious D is going on tour and they're bringing Neil Hamburger with them. Contrary to what some might say, he is not that amusing. I can't imagine how a crowd of people at Madison Square Garden are going to react to him. |
New Lynch film » Apparently David Lynch is going to release his latest epic, Inland Empire, through some self-distribution methods. Although, no one is sure what that means. For a moment I was excited by the idea of a new Lynch film. Possibly a more cohesive Lynch film. But from reading the quotes on this page it sounds to be his most non-sequential, most absurd film to date. What's with that anyway? When the writer/director says "I write the thing scene by scene and much of it is shot and I don’t have much of a clue where it will end." isn't that a giant recipe for trouble? And by trouble I mean, a terrible film. |
Commix » Waste some time today at COMMIX, the site that lets your mix your own comic strip. The interface is easy to use and fun to browse through all the different artwork styles. And if that weren't enough amusement for you, there are plenty of great comics to browse. |
downfloat photography » It's been a long time since I've taken a look at downfloat. Too long apparently. The site is now a photography portfolio for Peter Skwiot Smith and it's a real doozy. TheHolga and SX-70 pics are my favorites but every set has something worthwhile to offer. |
FeedMeGigs / Tourfilter » Keeping up with what bands are coming to your city is a difficult task (even harder if you actually live in a large metro area) but there are a few services that are coming around that are trying to change that. Sure Pollstar has listings but that's rarely for the small club show up the street. I think everyone should take a look at Feed Me Gigs! and TourFilter for their band scheduling needs. Neither one is perfect but both offer some nice amenities. Feed Me Gigs lacks in the design department but allows you to build a watch list off of a pre-populated list (later allowing to add your own). Even local bands will come up in the main search. TourFilter seems to have the right idea for the most part. Each major metro area has its own subdomain - i.e. Nashville - and whenever possible will link to mp3 samples of the artist. So if you'v never heard of Ole Mossy Face - now you can. The few downsides I see to the service, and there are only a few, is that typos will incur multiple listings and that it seems like entering in a list of bands to look for rather than a list of venues is counter-intuitive. What makes more sense, to enter in 300 of your favorite artists or to enter in the 5 venues that you regularly go to? Regardless, it's a nice thing to have around and works as a great quick reference. |
October 12, 2006
Beck - The Information covers » By now I think it safe to assume most people know that the new Beck album is doing something a little different with the album artwork. It comes as a blank canvas and you are invited to use the sticker pack that it comes with to create your own cover. MTV News makes it sound like the idea is the last ditch effort to save the CD format in a dying world of mp3 downloads but I personally think that's a bit extreme. Regardless of all that, I was curious to see what people were making with their sticker packs and didn't have to look much further than the Flickr Group: Beck "The Information" album covers Pool, naturally. Has anyone picked up the disc and made their own yet? |
Marmaduke is all the rage » So, there's the Marmaduke Explained site that I posted before and the Marmaduke Project that attempts to make funny versions / revisionings of Marmaduke but neither has anything on this particular comic strip. I can't begin to explain what is going on here but I do know that it makes me quite uncomfortable. In the good way. Update: It is quite possible that this one is even better, though not quite as disturbing. |
Democracy Player » So I read this article about a piece of software called Democracy, a free and open source internet TV platform. It comes with some built-in channels of music videos, original programming, and allows you, the user, to add RSS from BitTorrent feeds so you'll always be getting the latest episode of your favorite shows. Basically it's a simplified version of TiVo for your computer but without all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, the application is still in beta and occasionally has some memory leaks, making it virtually unusuable at times. So while I don't think it's ready for the big time yet, it's a great idea that I hope to see grow further. Speaking of TV on the ole computer. Has anyone watched any TV shows over at ABC Streaming? I watched last night's LOST via the service and I must say I thought it was an incredibly pleasant experience. Very quick streaming, the ads were shorter (shorter than TV for sure), and ready to watch whenever you want. Not a bad deal for free. |
Julia Fullerton-Batten Photography » The photography of Julia Fullerton-Batten has a somewhat surreal feel to it. The "Teenage Stories" set of photos seems mythical, epic, but strangely real at the same time. Sure it's unlikely for a giant teenage girl to step in an enormous pile of gum outside of some European city but from looking at the photo it could happen! The portraits section also adds a nice touch of using the subjects surrounding to tell a story about the person being captured. |
Artzybasheff's Machinalia » Artzybasheff's Machinalia is a book of illustrations transforming seemingly mundane machines and tools into characters full of life and whimsy - but still managing to maintain an air of severe creepiness. I mean, these guys are cute and all but something about pouring molten steel into an unwilling participant is not the most pleasant thought. The Golden Age style is undeniable and incredibly unique. |
John Hodgman is great » So I read this great interview recently with John Hodgman and I must say, he's pretty hilarous. Though mostly known as "PC" from the new line of Apple ads, he's also a Daily Show correspondent and the author of The Areas of My Expertise - a novel of fake facts. Thanks to Robbie for the heads up.. this guy ranks has the potential to rank up there with David Sedaris in terms of favorite humorous writers. |
OS X Productivity » Ever since I switched to being a fulltime Mac user at work I've had a whole lot less time to browse and post. Maybe it's the fact that we have had a whole lot to do recently, or maybe it has to do with the fact that I don't have a virtual barrage of bookmarks at my ready anymore but things are certainly slowing down on the yewknee.com front. Hopefully I can try to step it up and keep it consistent soon. Guess those ads right, you can be productive on a Mac. |

The death of imagination » These two articles attempt to tackle the idea of the death of the modern novel, and more-so imagination, in the age of the Internet (read: IM, email, web video, web games, instant gratification extravaganza). The points are incredibly valid and will hopefully make a few people consider the fact that they haven't read a book in some time.. and maybe they should ask themself why they haven't. |
Draw Play - the new linerider » Could Draw Play be the new Line Rider? Doubt it but it's still fun to play. |
Out The Other Award » Congrats to out the other... for winning the Nashville Scene Best of Nashville award for best new music blog. I've been telling you guys to check it out, I hope you have been. Another mention worth note - The South Will Rise Again wins Best Movie Yet To Be Made. There's a crapton of awards given out (the worst being that Pink Spiders win best local band? what?) but I'm sure anyone that is a non-Nashville resident will take a pass at reading them. |
New Boeing » Airplanes and space shuttles baffle me. Aside from the actual science behind it all, when has the airplane design really been re-done? I realize they are expensive to make but c'mon, there's gotta be something new you can do! Enter the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner - a redesign meant to waylay the effects of jetlag. Oh, and it comes with WiFi on all flights. Bout time. |
Pure Terror » Take note that I've reposted last years Halloween mix, Pure Terror, for your downloading and listening enjoyment. It's been too long since you've heard that North American Halloween Prevention Initiative song and it's time you changed that. |
October 10, 2006
The Idol » Run Wrake created this absolutely entrancing animation. The stylized 2D illustrations combined with the fantastical storyline comes across like an old Grimms fairy tale - dark and somewhat sinister at times. I won't give it all away but I will say that it is absolutely worth your time to watch. |
Google and YouTube - details » This article contains some nice details and summary of the Google YouTube acquisition and how it echoes some of the bigger dot-com antics of the late 90's. However, the most interesting tidbit in the piece to me were these two paragraphs: The success of the YouTube acquisition will probably lie in embedding video advertising into the clips that millions of people watch everyday from their computers. So far, YouTube’s management has been reluctant to include advertising within clips, for fear of alienating users.Personally, if YouTube had a 15-second pre-roll on their clips I feel like people would evacuate the place in droves. It's not like there aren't other video sites out there more than willing to deliver the content with no added extras. And what if I upload my own video - they are going to add an advertisement to it? Seems a bit fishy. Hopefully the Google deal was a wise one but only time will tell if YouTube is more than the current hotspot on the web (think Friendster). |

Affordable Art Guide » The Affordable Art Guide by Maria of Port 2 Port Press ( a site worth visitng ) is a great look at some incredibly well done prints ranging from the ever popular Aesthetic Apparatus to Push Me, Pull Me and a range of great photography related goods (such as Paul Paper). And all of the works available are pretty affordable - ranging from $20 - $100. |

WOXY's dead - just kidding » Apparently I spoke way too soon when I mentioned that woxy.com was dead and going off the air. Almost immediately after pulling their own plug, they were purchased and have now relaunched. You'll even be able to program your own radio station via La La (their parent company) sometime in a month or so. I plan on tuning in today as I've been in serious need of some great new music. |

Ass Lightning » Lightning exits woman's bottom - this article is both amazing and hilarious. Please do not make any attempts to disspell the legitimacy of it. I want to believe it is an actual description of a real event and not just Internet lies. This could, quite possibly, be the best thing you've ever read on the Internet. |

Google Buys YouTube » Well, it is official - Google Buys YouTube For $1.65 Billion. Yes, billion. Given that I've read nothing about YouTube turning even the slightest profit (think about it - are there really that many ads on the site?) I have to say I'm a bit surprised. Particularly since Google has their own competitive video service already. Does this mean the two will merge or that Google will now be "competing" with itself via YouTube? Either way, it's sort of good to know that Google has a nice $1.6 billion laying around to buy out other companies. You know, for a rainy day. |
Battle of the Bands » Given that approximately 20 people sent this to me on Friday I can only assume you've all seen it - but just in case you haven't be sure to watch Battle of the Bands - Album Art -a humorous motion graphics battle of animated and manipulated classic album art. The best part, obviously, is the owl from the cover of Rush's Fly By Night emitting lazers from its eyes. |

The Protomen » Is it possible for a band to exist solely as a conceptual vision based on the trials and tribulations of Dr. Light vs Dr. Wiley - a story commonly known as Megaman - and still be legitmately good? If you said no, think again. Hear me out - yes, it is a little odd to hear lyrics based on commonly loved video game characters but the fever and presentation of this epic journey comes across as completely honest. If you're feeling hesitant, go to their MySpace page and stream "Unrest in the House of Light" - if you didn't know it was about MegaMan you'd never assume it was. If you're glazing over this because you think you aren't going to enjoy something that's "video game related" - think again. Try them out. » The Protomen - Hope Rides Alone
» The Protomen - Unrest In The House of Light
» The Protomen - Will of One

Bathynomus Giganteus » Meet Bathynomus Giganteus - aka your latest nightmare fodder. Seriously, this thing is beyond creepy and weird - it looks like a real life Metroid character. |
Honor Student Spec Ads » Two new spec ads up at Honor Student. Please watch them both but if you only have time (or the patience) for one, watch the Converse Sasquatch ad. So good. |

Marmaduke Explained » Marmaduke Explained - 500 words or less explaining the unfunny comic in a humorous way. I will admit I didn't see the humor in this at first but have since come around and enjoy it immensely. |
Penguin Book Covers » Joe Kral of Test Pilot Collective has been collecting Penguin Books for some time because of their cover designs. If you ever need inspiration - just check out his massive archive. Incredible use of clean type, artistic collages, illustrations, photography, and great color choices. And if that someone manages not to be inspiring, then check out any of his other sets and you'll be set for awhile. |
Telephoto Lens as Penile Substitute » I'm looking to get a new digital camera. Can anyone make any suggestions? I'm thinking I'd like to go with something that the World's Largest Telephoto Lens will work on. I mean, I could carry that thing around on the top of my car with ease. |
Romanian Stencils » Looking to waste some time browsing through image archives of stencil work of varying quality? Then check out the Romanian Stencil Archive - an image archive of stencil work of varying quality. I suggest 45, 33, 34, 126, 80 & 77, and whichever other I happened to have clicked on. |
Eternal Sunshine Effects » The Making of Eternal Sunshine goes through a handful of the special effects shots from the movie and explains how they were done. Amazingly, several of the shots are almost 100% digital compositions based on real film footage (amazing because not once did I bat an eye and assume that certain scenes were actually renders). The scene with Clementine walking down the street with one leg was the most revealing to me as I'd never even noticed they had removed one of her limbs. |

October Mix » I posted my October mix for those of you that are interested. It's somewhat Halloween themed again but I will admit that it doesn't hold a candle to last years mix - mostly because I'd already used "Jellybones" and "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?" - those two tracks will make any mix. Regardless, I think it's an entertaining listen and I'd like to know what you think. So let me know. |

Mahaffey Interview » Anyone that considers themselves a fan of Self may want to check out this recent interview that Brad Ross-MacLeod recently conducted with him. Topics include Matt's work in Wired All Wrong, his involvement with Beck, his standings on recording new Self tracks (and touring), and more. Strangely, they do not touch on Bleu Leo - a collaborative project involving tons of musicians creating modern day ELO tracks. Better than LADNA. |

LOST premiere » The season premiere of LOST is tonight. If you haven't been watching, it's too late to start in on Season 3 now. Go back and get those first two seasons worth of DVD's, you'll appreciate it. I know next to nothing about the episode and I'm happy to keep it that way. The real question is - will Paul continue with his great summaries and post-episode discussions? |
Did I Step On Your Trumpet? » Did I Step On Your Trumpet? - watch the video for the best track off of the Danielson album Ships. Very clever, very simple, idea with excellent execution. The humor and homemade vibe fits the band just right. Oh, and the song is infectiously good. |
The Owl » Please watch the video for the I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness track "The Owl" right here. Fantastic style and the visual style matches the creepy, foreboding vibe of the song itself. The server may be a bit slow at the moment but it's absolutely worth the wait. |
Line Rider Helicopter Escape » You can stop wasting your time playing Line Rider because there is no way you've built a course as amazing as Helicopter Escape. Assuming that you've played the game and get the context of the clip it is pretty much incredibly entertaining. |
Boo and Boo Too » Recently I was contacted by Boo and Boo Too - a band out of Kansas that from their description and website feel I suspected would sound in the same vein as The Unicorns or some like minded twee pop. Turns out I was wrong. However, the frantic sound that they do have has a lot of promise. The track linked below - "Everyday I Saw You In Egypt" - is great and could even better if those horns were just a little higher in the mix. That's the price you pay for falling for demos. » Boo and Boo Too - Everyday I Saw You In Egypt
» Boo and Boo Too - Now We're Ghosts

Super Proposal » Apparently, there is a guy trying to propose to his wife via the SuperBowl. Check out My Super Proposal for more details but I'd say the chances of raising approximately $2 million in 4 months time is fairly slim.. but maybe I'm just being a pessimist! |

Transformers / MeatCake / Tiger Pigs / Chiru » Help Drastically Improve Transformers - Apparently the Official Transformers site is having some contest where people enter in a phrase they want to hear Optimus Prime say sometime during the movie. I Watch Stuff suggests the line "I guess I'll transformer into a truck now." - which I could not agree with more. Meat Cake - I want to be repulsed by this but in all honesty, I'd love to have some. Mother of the Year - Tigress cares for litter of weaner pigs - striped tiger costumes on pigs creates adorable photos. Chiru - far more convincing zombies than the original 'Thriller' video. Much much scarier in a low budget sort of way. |
Fenetres Volantes » There are some who claim that Fenetres Volantes is the greatest screensaver out there (for a Mac). I must admit it is pretty snazzy but can anything really top Starfield Simulation? |
Gabbly Chat » Ever wanted to chat with anyone else browsing a particular site? Gabbly makes it possible. Check out the Gabbly - yewknee.com and you can chat with others who happen to be visiting the link at the same time. It is, amazingly, simple, quick, and mostly bug free. There are a few things that could be improved (user list is buggy) but overall, pretty amazing. Try it out.. chat it up. |
KidRobot Clothes » Oh yea, that Kid Robot relaunch with their new line of Kid Robot Apparel has launched. The hoodies are pretty much nuts but there are some decent tee's in there. |
Mao Mouse » Chairman Mao as told by Frank Kozik. Pretty amusing but I know I'd like it better if it wasn't glow in the dark. |
Russian Invention » They say 'Necessity is the Mother of Invention' and I can't think of a more appropriate place filled with necessity than Russia. That being said - these inventions (link corrected) are absolutely brilliant in their simplicity and innovative rethinking of their original intent. Some of them are a bit goofy (intentionally so) but others - such as the paintbrush doorstop, plastic glove salad dressing dispenser, sleep goggle, etc - hit the mark exactly right. |
Ruben's Tube » Ruben's Tube is further proof that you dodn't know a whole lot about science. The concept is simple - a PVC pipe with holes drilled in it, propane, flames, and a speaker that creates a wave form in the amount of propane that can escape through the holes. Think of it as a metalheads EQ. |
