Friday Videos - Aug 31st » Eddie Shreds Retro Logos Kobayashi vs a Kodiak Bear "Best" Bass Solo The McBain Movie Monsters of Megaphone The "Monsters of Megaphone" is a Mr. Show classic to me, making me realize it's been far too long since I've watched a full episode. |

Next Big Nashville - Wristband Giveaway 1 » By the good graces of the folks who put together Next Big Nashville I've been given two pair of wristbands to giveaway for the festival. Not only does the wristband get you into of the shows it also gets some discounts at various retailers around town during the week of the festival. I realize this is not so interesting for those of you not residing in Nashville but I feel it's a worthy event of giving some serious 'blog time' so get ready for more posts over the coming week regarding spotlighted shows and such. And it's a good way to get exposed to some new music - I mean read all these posts! That aside, if you are interested in winning a pair of wristbands leave a comment on this post and I'll pick a winner at random on Monday. After that, we'll start giveaway #2. Update: Okay, I made the computer choose a winner and it looks like it is "coLLin" for the first pair. Assuming that I hear back, the first pair is now spoken for. However, if I don't hear back I will choose again. AND I've got another pair to give away before the festival starts. Anyone who has already expressed interest in the wristband is still in the running. |

Wombat Airlines Blog » Wombat Airlines, aka Wijtze Valkema (the man responsible for this illustration), now has a blog showcasing his fantastic illustrations. Love these guys and Wijtze's overall illustration vibe. |

Yewknee PSA » Looks like I'm guilty of having been a bit wordy lately. I'll tone it down in the coming days / weeks and attempt to just deliver the goods quick and easy. Thank you, that is all. |

Banksy Beats The System? » Ryan sent over this article that claims that much of Banksy's work is now being protected by the British government. Apparently the city has figured out that Banksy pieces can be sold for charity at high dollar amounts. While I have a hard time believing this I know it's not the first time a Banksy piece has been protected and treated as more than 'just graffiti.' Regardless of the truth of this particular situation, is it possible for graffiti to graduate to legitimate art while staying on the street? |

Eureka Gold » Another local Nashville act worth mentioning is Eureka Gold. I've yet to see them live (a scenario I hope to correct this Saturday at The 5 Spot) but have been enjoying the few recordings I've managed to snag here and there. Singer Jordan Lehning is a jack of all trades - as he is also responsible for the music involved with The Noncommissioned Officers, aka the soundtrack to Make Out Violence, as well as creating his own music - all having their own style. Eureka Gold is just one outlet of songwriting - seemingly inspired by a variety of musical styles. While "Tell The Birds" is the least 'rocking' of these available tracks I recommend it highly, as I've had it heavy rotation in many months. The band plays tomorrow at The 5 Spot with The Golden Gears and Forget Cassettes. If you don't make it to that because you're off seeing De Novo Dahl at Mercy Lounge I suggest coming out on Sept. 8th for the Next Big Nashville extravaganza at the Cannery. |

To Nashville, Love Brooklyn » The SQ FT Gallery has a bunch of items for sale in their Shop from Caitlin Keegan and Julia Rothman (both great sites if you have the time to visit) collectively entitled To Nashville, Love Brooklyn. The two artists offer a nice variety of styles (the Ship Series postcards are great) and have further confirmed that the art of Gocco is one of my favorites. |

Local Artist - Disappointed by Candy » Bad band names backed up with good music must be the new trend in Nashville. Local act Disappointed by Candy certainly seems to fit the bill. So much so that I never bothered to check them out until the other day when I began combing the artist list for Next Big Nashville. Their music has an urgency to it created by driving drums, rocking guitars, flourishes of electronics and various harmonies. It's actually a rather nice blend of a lot of elements that I tend to enjoy. » Disappointed by Candy - Failed Medication

Robotic Future » This robotic arm mimics the human muscle and bone structure to create its movements. At the moment it appears to be able to crudely write "Hello" and lift a small weight - but the appearance of the device is everything a sci-fi geek ever dreamed the future held for robotics. |

Next Big Nashville » One week from today will mark the beginning of the 2nd annual burgeoning music festival known as Next Big Nashville. While certainly not as extensive in scope as SXSW or CMJ it gives a giant collective of Nashville artists a chance to showcase their talents in a short span of time. The schedule has been released and, as you can see, it's a ton of music. Janet at Out The Other has been interviewing and featuring bands, Nashville Cream will be doing so as well. So, I will be featuring a couple local noteworthy bands during the next week or so in hopes to get people out to shows. Added to that, I have been given the go ahead to give away some wristbands to the event - basically a free pass to any of the shows for the entire time. More on that later. Up first, SJ & The Props. Five guys, four ladies, a ton of instruments and a dash of soul. The only release available thus far is the Tragedy EP and the promise of a triple disc full-length in the future. Overall it's a nice varietal mix of rock, gospel, soul, bluegrass and the tiniest bit of more electronic elements involving plenty of guitar, big drums, organ and horns. The band will be playing Thursday, September 6th at The End as part of the Grand Palace showcase. If you're only prone to download one of these tracks I highly suggest getting "Tragedy" - seems the most accessible to those who appreciate the upbeat styles of Avett Brothers, Blitzen Trapper and their ilk. » SJ & The Props - Tragedy

25 Weirdest Animals » One could argue that the a 25 Weirdest Animals list could consist entirely of life under the sea and be a bit more accurate but this one contains quite a few gems. The Red Panda (pictured) is not exactly weird but it is rarity. For weird please see the Hagfish, Star-nosed Mole, Tarsier or Aye-Aye. Link via Jeremy Davis. |

Trunkt: Circa Ceramics and More » The Skull Mug is just one great offering from Circa Ceramics but appears to be sold out. Disappointing. But in happier news, it turns out that Trunkt offers a virtually innumerable amount of potential goods worth purchasing.. such as these ties that Mike was kind enough to point out to me. |
|
Planters » The Science and Sons Park Planters "were created to elevate the common household plant to the status of full grown tree." The design is brilliant in its simplicity and made even more effective by the humorous little scenes taking place below the "tree." Be forewarned that the final planter is a little NWS but a great way to round out the set. Be sure to check out the rest of the Collections for more goodness. |

iPhone Hacked » USA Today reports on a teen that unlocked the iPhone (that photo is priceless) in exchange for a new car and some additional iPhones for friends. That being said Engadget has been reporting on another company having unlocked it just recently. Maybe some wires are crossed but seems like there is competing information here... |
|
Pillowig » The Pillowig is a vaguely impractical solution to a persistent problem - taking naps whenever and wherever. Be sure to visit the detail page for a number of great photos. |
|
Music Rundown » In the spirit of full disclosure it should be noted that the following music was supplied to me by various promotions companies in exchange for the possibility that I'd write about it and, thus, spread the word of its existence. That being said it should also be noted that just because it comes from a promotions company it doesn't mean it's inherently bad nor does it mean I will push anything towards my readership that I think is a total waste of time. So, on to the free goods... Office - A Night At The Ritz is pop rock in its purest form. While the lyrical content may not touch your soul the music provides a nice backdrop for a sunny, leisurely setting. Syme - Swing Swing - Receiving music with absolutely zero idea of what it's going to sound like can either be surprisingly pleasant or a disappointly awful experience. In the case of Syme I was rather surprised to hear a band from Norway creating a blend of sounds akin to Kent, Radiohead (a lame comparison but warranted in doses), My Vitriol and any number of British / Norweigan pop bands. The album art is weird high-school like doodle of some Borg like future but it's not indicative of the sounds within. This is not something you would listen to for a quick pick-me-up in the morning but its got a nice epic draw to it. » Earlimart - Answers and Questions
» The Cribs - Our Bovine Public
» The Cribs - Men's Needs
» The Cribs - Men's Needs (CSS Remix)

Advertising that sort of works... » Is advertising effective if it catches your eye but you still have zero idea what the product being pushed actually is? These Leichtin ads fall squarely into that category. They look incredible but I've no idea what the product is and really have no interest in finding out more, I'm just happy to see such a crazy idea actually pulled off effectively. |
|
Daft Punk - Inside the Pyramid » This article contains a bevy of information in regards to Daft Punk but two items in particular to take note of: 1) The band is putting out a live album in November and 2) The electronics setup that is contained with the "Pyramid" that they perform in is absolutely, purely, insane. I can't even begin to comprehend the amount of knobs, dials, levers, switches, buttons, consoles, wires or even power strips involved in such a feat. All that and they've got those rad suits to deal with... |
|
Penguin Books - Redux » Yesterday, Blankenship posted about a forthcoming Penguin Books design retrospective showcasing many of the great book cover designs throughout the years. As an addendum to that it should be noted that Penguin Books also have a Classics Redux in which many of the publishers most popular titles get a facelift by some recognizable contemporary artists. The Charles Burns cover illustration for The Jungle is both gruesome and completely appropriate. Lots of great new covers to check out and solidify Penguin Books as one of the few publishers with a seriously firm understanding of the power of the book cover. |

Rich Tuzon » Really enjoying the works of Rich Tuzon. His takes on Greek and Roman mythological ideas are just as fantastic as the original stories behind them... |
|
Quick Links » Digg redesigns - it looks a bit busier at first glance and maybe overly complicated? I haven't formed a complete opinion yet but first impressions are meaningful. YouTube seems to have updated their player a bit so that you can drag the progress head to anywhere in the video and it will start buffering from that point. Still no visual improvements on the player but the streaming playback is rather nice. Hipster Olympics is making it rounds, you are required by internet pop culture to watch it immediately. |
|
Darjeeling Limited Behind The Scenes » Hot on the heels of Owen Wilson suicide rumors FOX Searchlight has released four new behind the scenes clips from the forthcoming The Darjeeling Limited. Maybe it's strange timing or maybe someone worked their tail off last night cutting all these together to divert some media attention - either way, they are interesting (yet mostly uninformative) clips of the new film. |
|
Live Music - New and Old » Feist - Letterman Self - Mainstreet 97 I can't believe that Self video is 10 years old. Unbelievable. |
|
Site in Flux » Dreamhost has been wrestling with more hosting woes and yewknee.com has been suffering the consequences. I really need to give serious consideration to switching hosts but having as many domains hosted in one place makes that rather difficult. Regardless, now you know why posting is slow to nill today - balancing a high workload and low server response makes for little output. |

Life Size Paper Boat » Michel Gondry would be very proud of artist Frank Boetler who has just set sail in a life-size paper boat. It was constructed in 2 hours and, in theory, will last for forty days until it disintegrates. I hope he brought supplies. |
|
Mt. Fuji Building » I can't even comprehend what a building of this magnitude would even look like. The Japanese design is meant to house one million people and, as the worlds tallest building, will be taller than Mt. Fuji. I'm curious if this will actually happen or not given the ~$900 billion pricetag but if Dubai is happening, anything is possible. |
|
jQuery Nerd Links » I've been doing some coding on an upcoming project in my free time and ran across some great plugins for jQuery while doing various bits of research. I realize that moo tools is the next best js framework to be using but I'm still impressed by the ease of jquery.

Pop Culture Primer » American Gladiators Returns - it will be unfortunate when they don't name the pro athletes Zap, Nitro, Turbo, Siren, etc but as long as they keep the basic premise in line it'll be great. There are many ways to screw this up - just don't reinvent the wheel, use what already has worked so well for so long. FOX announces next AvP film - apparently the franchise continues with Aliens Vs. Predator - Requiem.. Darjeeling Limited Bonus Short - the forthcoming Wes Anderson movie will have an 12-minute short tacked on to the beginning of it entitled Hotel Chevalier that serves as a prologue to the feature length film. Sam Raimi behind The Hobbit - looks like Raimi will be directing the prequel to the LOTR trilogy with Peter Jackson producing. Somehow I managed to skip the majority of LOTR fandom but this is interesting news none the less. |

Pathetic Geek Stories » Pathetic Geek Stories takes harrowing tales from user submissions and illustrates them into comic strips. The art itself is along the lines of the R. Crumb / Harvey Pekar style but the stories themselves make the project worth your time. It's fairly depressing to read about all of these horrible events that kids had to endure for whatever reason - mostly just for being awkward and other kids ostracizing them for it. Some of them aren't so bad but there are quite a few that are just awful. Oddly, I was compelled to read them all. |

Old Meets New » Minipop Cross Stitch is an incredible example of what happens when old art (cross stitch) meets new art (pixel style). I look forward to seeing the completed Royal Tenenbaums but will settle for the goodness of ZZ Top for the time being. Link via Jessica. |

Word of the Day » Bourgy - ajd. bhoo-see - Term used to describe someone of lower class origins who shuns his/her background as they ascend the class structure. The term originates from the Marxist word “Bourgeoisie”, which was a term used to define the minority upper-class that controlled pre-Soviet Russia. Also used to describe a person who tries to be upper class despite a lack of monetary resources and social connections. |

De Novo Dahl make good » Local pop outfit De Novo Dahl signed with Roadrunner Records awhile ago (a surprising choice) but it seems to be panning out for them quite well. They recently released their first EP for the label entitled Shout! and are hitting the road with Hot Hot Heat starting in mid-September. To say the least, I'm happy to see that a band once signed to my favorite local label has gone on to bigger and better things. I believe a full length album is on the way for early 2008.. but in the meantime, go check those tour dates. » De Novo Dahl - Shout (Popple Mix)

Whiskerino 2007 Approaches » The next Whiskerino is roughly 2 months away. I had grand plans to have the site in development starting in February and that didn't pan out.. at all. So, here I am with 2 months to design, build and test a site that I am very excited to launch. The last Whiskerino was mind blowing in terms of participation and I can only imagine that this year will top that (maybe even TOO much participation is on the horizon). So really, I'm asking for help. I need to know what everyone thinks the site was lacking last time? What would make it better this time around? Or just insight into handling a site of this possible magnitude. Please keep the following in mind: · Possibly looking at 150 - 300 participantsObviously I'll do my best to deploy some smart URL's, use some Ajax for a few things and try to integrate the Chat / Quick commenting features of Moustache May but I want to take all the flaws of the previous sites and do away with them (making way for new flaws). So, please, help me out here and let me know what would make for a great site. |

Vampire Weekend » It just dawned on me just how much I've been loving Vampire Weekend. It's been in my rotation for awhile (thanks to someone) but it dawned on me just how much I'm enjoying the album. I hear from some that it's making its way around the blogosphere but I've been super lax in my internet readings as of late so I'm not really aware of the hype. Hands down, it's a great album and I suggest downloading the following and immediately placing in your "Best of 2007" playlist. » Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
» Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
» Vampire Weekend - The Kid's Don't Stand A Chance

Damian Ortega » The thumbnail shown here does no justice to the Damian Ortega piece Controller of the Universe. I'd even venture to say that the enlarged version doesn't do it full justice either. I imagine seeing this in person would be quite dramatic. His other works are worth a gander too... |

An Interesting Debate... » Demetre writes: Do you feel "official" artist websites are a necessity these days with myspace and virb serving all of the relevant content for a super fan to even a first time listener? Often times I seem to be getting redirected from a bands official site to myspace. Friends of mine who do a lot of cd packaging have told me they are adding myspace links in the liner notes alongside the official sites.Basically I think this topic deserves a little bit of discussion. With the uprising of MySpace, Purevolume, VIRB, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. etc. there are a ton of tools that artists have at their disposal to distribute content. An artist could potentially have streaming (non-downloadable) music, a bio, video streams and tour dates all on one page (the essentials of a band website) inserted with a handy content management tool without spending a dime. So how could this be bad? It's bad for two reasons: 1) MySpace is absolutely horrid in terms of code. The layouts are not CSS compliant and while their whole marketing angle is "make it YOUR space" you are really restricted to doing anything halfway decent looking unless you are actually a web nerd. Even those "page modifiers" that exist out there really don't do a very good job. 2) If you are in a band, an ultimately creative endeavor, you should strive to avoid homogeny. Not that you have to be 100% over the top unique but being haunted by the Ghost of Mediocrity should certainly be a goal of any artist. Overall I think it is great that places like VIRB exist to create profiles for bands but I do not believe that they should replace the full-on artist site - only supplement it. |

Ferris Plock, Kelly Tunstall Goodies » Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall have a new show opening entitled "Subterrnanea" - a group of works that "depicts a fictional underground realm inhabited by a world of characters inspired by New York's subways, sewers and underground tunnels." There are plenty of solo pieces from each artist but I'd venture to say that this one is my favorite of their collaborations - menacingly appropriate. |

magCulture » The magCulture Blog has some great design and insight into some fantastic magazine design / news. The layout on this Bjork interview is brilliant! Love it. |

Jeremy Fish.. err.. Aesop Rock Ecard » This Aesop Rock ecard is in support of the forthcoming album None Shall Pass and quizzes you on little bits of the artists and rewards you along the way but the real reason you should check it out is for all of the great Jeremy Fish character design throughout the card and music video at the end (seriously, that skull heart is my new favorite image). Remember, the album is called None Shall Pass - that should help you get through the front door. » Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass

LiquidCity » The Liquidcity Blog is the design related ramblings of Go Squared an advertising company doing something with square ads that I'm not sure I fully comprehend it's revolutionary stance. But I digress, Liquidcity has some great posts for designers - such as Key references, various design ideas or the occasional php script (finds unused CSS classes). If you're a web developer / designer it's worth a moment of your time. |

Fitness Half-Truths and Lies » I hardly consider myself much of a fitness person (if at all) but I found this WebMD article, Top 9 Fitness Myths -- Busted! to be a rather entertaining and enlightening read. I'd heard most of the myths before and enjoyed hearing a "scientific" take on them. |
|
Feist site » The official Feist site being taken down because of a desired overhaul isn't so surprising but rather the method in which it was removed. A personal note from Miss Feist herself explaining that "it was a robot with a paper mask of my face on it" seems amusingly honest. |
|
Top 40 Magazine Covers » The Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years is a great compilation of compelling photography, inventive graphic design and, mostly, societal commentary. Personally I think #31 was a huge mistake to be included as "top 40" but they can't all be winners can they? |

UNKLE contest » I'm not quite sure when it happened but at some point yewknee.com started getting free goods from random promotions companies. It's certainly not an onslaught but it's more than nothing. That being said, I openly admit to being part of the promotions machine and I'm sort of okay with that. I'm not writing about things that I'm not interested in and I plan on spreading the joy as best I can. That being said, I recently received a rather hefty package of UNKLE goods and I'm hoping to give them away. All of the items shown feature music from the bands latest, War Stories. I'm actually a little erked that I am letting go of the dual 7" with the Autolux song on it because I am damn sure it sounds fantastic. Regardless, hit up the comments if you want one of these guys and I'll send it your way. · "Burn My Shadow" CD Single (with b-sides) » UNKLE - Burn My Shadow (feat. Ian Astbury)

Nashville Notes » This weekend is the first Barcamp Nashville - an "unconference" in which a bunch of people in the web and tech industry will gather together at the Exit/In to listen to some speakers and meet and greet. I'm not entirely sure how an "unconference" differs from a regular "conference" but I do know that Griffin Technology plans to be there and will likely give away some free stuff if you get there early enough. Admittance is based on first-come, first-serve basis for those that are registered - so you might want to do so just in case you are curious about going. · How I Became The Bomb will be playing at the Mercy Lounge tonight with Stories That Live, The Turf and Sleep Study. I will be there. · The Farmers Market will be opening up their doors to local artists and crafts people this weekend for the first time. So if you've been putting off checking it out now is the time. · Personally, I will be continuing to look for an apartment or house to actually live in as couch surfing has grown quite old. |

Laugh-Out-Loud Cats » Recently I expressed my unwaivering love for LOL Cats despite knowing that they were already internet passe and waning in their effectiveness to make me laugh. But then Ben showed me the Laugh Out Loud Cats comicstrip - a rarely known strip from 1912 - 1913 featuring the "exploits of Meowlin Q. Kitteh and his young hapless kitten friend, Pip." The re-invention of the LOL Cats meme is absolutely brilliant, highly entertaining and has an undeniably great style. I wish I could draw half as well as Aloysius "Gorilla" Koford. Oh, and keep an eye out for the hidden "H" in every strip that makes reference to Hobotopia. |

Image Resizing via Siggraph 07 » Seam Carving for Content-Aware Image Resizing may not sound like anything you'd want to click on but if you've ever had to use Photoshop to retool an image - specifically changing the layout of an image, or removing someone, etc - then you will want to spend a few minutes watch the video. A series of algorithms allows this software to detect the best place to morph a photo, allowing a user to stretch or squash an image on the fly while retaining it's layout. My explanation does it little justice - just watch it. It's like "Photoshop on crack" - via Madrid. |

Open Letters » Dear People With Webpages, Thanks for having a website! I find myself spending far too much time reading your content and enjoying those things that you decide to put out there for all the world to see. Sometimes I'd like to write you a note to say thanks, or maybe inquire about something further or maybe just catch up with you if you happen to be an old friend but I'm having the hardest time doing so because you have zero way of contacting you on your site. Yes, I understand that comments could allow me to contact you. Or maybe your Wordpress / Movable Type / whatever CMS did not come with a default "type your email address here" field but, please, try to work it in there somewhere? If you obfuscate the address just a little bit spam bots won't be able to snag it and anyone with a vague brain in their head will be able to reach you. File this one under pet peeves but you know who you are! Thanks, Michael Website Reader p.s. please don't be offended! I mean no harm by this request.. it's just that I'd like to email you, you have a website and yet, you have no way for me to get in touch. It's all quite innocent. |

The Hejz » The work contained in the portfolio over at The Hejz is incredibly detailed, lush and insanely well realized. I am always blown away by illustrations (like this, this, this or anything else in the portfolio) with such vision and equal execution. I wish there were desktop sized versions of everything in there because I'd gaze at them all regularly. Link via Daniel. |

Still Life » The Still Life Gallery is an incredible set of images capturing the chaotic moment of destruction for a number of figurines (mostly of Asian characters). It all gets quite ridiculous but it's worth reading through. |

Cracked Pepper » My brother tipped me off to a new Beatles mashup commemorating the 40th Anniversary release of The Beatles Sgt. Peppers entitled Cracked Pepper. Many mashups can sound forced or aggravating after awhile but this one is top notch. The two artists, CCC and Ill Chemist, have managed to throw a ton of different music into the Sgt. Peppers mix (pun intended) and create a whole new listening experience while still maintaining an honest tribute to the original album. » CCC / Ill Chemist - Kelly Watch The Hole

Not again... » Couple tries to name baby "@" - what is wrong with people?! I understand that in this case the sound translates to "Ai Ta" or "Love Him" in Mandarin but why not just name him "Ai Ta"? Why use the At Symbol character? Baffling! Is it settling to know that people are idiots the world over or is that more troubling? |
|
A Collaborative Mix Challenge » A mix challenge was presented to me today from Habitat Shoes in regards to new music fronted by the ladies (my words, not his). I was attempting to think of what would be worthy of making the cut on something of this nature and could come up with very little: Bat For Lashes has some interesting stuff on her disc that may be worthy of inclusion. But that's just 4 songs, tops! So, what am I missing? What women in rock / pop / whatever are doing something worth keeping on eye on. If there are enough submissions I'll do my best to get it all together before the close the Summer Mix Series. |

Pixel Pirate II » Pixel Pirate II Trailer Pixel Pirate II: Attack of the Astro Elvis Video Clone is an hour long narrative remix video constructed from samples pirated from over 300 film and music sources. It contains no original audio or video footage. Think of it as a sci-fi / biblical epic / action movie with a subplot of troubled romance. It stars Elvis Presley, Moses, The Hulk, Monkey, Batman & Robin, Michael Jackson and The Ghostbusters. The official site is here or here. It probably goes without saying that I can't even begin to express my excitement at seeing an Elvis to Hulk morph. |

Summer Mix Series Closing Shop Soon » Despite the fact that summer heat is at an all time high the Summer Mix Series must draw to a close soon. Open Tabs » Deep Purple - Fireball - a true wtf moment. Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus - the same reaction as above but for much different reasons. Plants and Brains - Secret Doors - I love the simple design of this album art.. I just wish the website didn't have a yellow glow around it. Ho Hum Robot - he appears depressed. Mah House - LOL Cats have passed their time of being an enjoyable activity these days but I am undeniably drawn to them. |

Banksy vs. Warhol? » MSNBC has posted a "Special Report" pitting Andy Warhol vs. Banksy - somewhat due to their similar styles, somewhat as a promotion for a new show opening in London this week where both artists are being shown side by side. It is an interesting notion to think of Banksy on the same level as Warhol in terms of notoriety but I don't think he's quite reached that level yet. Warhol enjoyed the spotlight and being the recognizable face behind the works - Banksy's desire to keep a much lower profile will prohibit him from ever reaching that level (not that he's ever stated that he desired to be on that level). Regardless, the article has some nice pics of a bunch of pieces from both artists to let you compare and contrast them. |

Modular Magazine: Volume 1 » The first issue of Modular Magazine is available for download over at Modular People. Even if you're not a typical listener of Modular Records artists (Klaxons, New Young Pony Club, Cut Copy, etc) there is likely something intriguing in the issue for you. The photos of various artists home studios, interviews with interesting people, a photo montage of Elvis morphing into The Hulk or some great type design all have broader appeal than just electronic dance music. |

New HTML tags on the way » According to this article there will be a number of new HTML tags introduced with HTML 5. The above listed isn't a complete look, just some new primary elements. This is good news indeed but I am curious as to just how long it will take for all the browsers to adopt the new markup and properly render it, error free.<section> <header> <nav> <article> <footer> |

Ser-vice is good for you » I recall some time ago when Mason posted about Ser-vice and I've been hooked ever since. They've launched a number of new goods since I last checked in with them but the quality is every bit as great as I remember it being. Their site design is clean, easy to use and quite beautiful actually. The products stand out in just the right way but the branding isn't lost in the shuffle. Thanks to Justin for reminding me that I hadn't been there in some time and needed to revist.. they are quite possibly my favorite design tee shop online. |

Open Letters » Dear eMusic, Thank you for all that you do in offering a DRM-free download service for such a wide variety of artists and genres. Your catalog is not as deep as those of some of your competitors but the lack of digital rights management and your easy to use Download Manager makes up for those areas where you are lacking. In fact, I would go as far as to say your best "weapon" against your competitors and possible draw for new customers would be a highly pleasurable user experience. Making your site incredibly easy to use will make people more prone to return to the site, download more music and possibly purchase Booster packs or upgrade their subscription service. That being said, why is it that I have to login every single time I visit your site? If I stop browsing it for a quick 15 minutes I am prompted to log into my account again. I understand the basic security concerns with offering a service such as yours but a simple checkbox that says "Remember Me" and sets a cookie to remember my login information for, say, a week - would be very easy to implement and would make everyones experience just that much better. I would also like to inquire as to why it is that when I write your Customer Support in regards to this issue your reply is simply "There is not currently a way to save login information on the site as this time." I realize this! That is why I wrote you in the first place! A reply along the lines of "we are constantly looking to improve our service and will investigate your suggestion" would be just as placating but might actually imply that you will look into my idea. All the best, Michael eMusic Subscriber |

Ace Fu Records Giveaway » Last week I received a random package from Ace Fu Records containing two 7-inches. One for Annuals "Brother" and one for Blonde Redheads song "23". I did not request either of these items nor was I aware that I was going to be receiving them. So, in the spirit of random giving, I am offering them to anyone reading this that would like them. First come, first serve. |

yewknee Summer Mixes » I finally finished my mixes for the Summer Mix Series. Please take a moment to download them and form an opinion. → Summer Nights II - an addendum to my original Summer Nights mix from a few years ago. It's meant to be used as a mix to wind down the evening. → One Saved Message - inspired by the Dandy Warhols b-side of the same name I've compiled a bunch of tracks together featuring voice mails, answering machine messages, etc. It is by no means an all inclusive definitive mix but it gets the job done. → 6 Degrees of Separation - Ryan presented me with the idea of creating a mix done in the fashion of "The Kevin Bacon Game" in which one artist directly relates to the next via common musicians. Producers and remixers don't count. So we bounced a tracklist back and forth for awhile before settling on what you see here. We could have gone a ton of different directions but I think where we ended up creates a nice flow. |

Hale Links: Volume 38 » These are a treat for me, so why not make them a treat for you? → Retractable Doorknob - brilliant! Why has it taken this long for such a thing to exist?! → Brush And Rinse Toothbrush - another simple invention that should have existed for a long time prior to now. I wonder if this would splash you in the face rather than the mouth. → Antartic Life - a photo gallery of imagery from the Artic that continues to be incredibly beautiful no matter how much of it I see. → Giant Lego man washed up on Dutch beach - what?! This is insane? Why is he wearing a shirt that says "No Real Than You Are"? Lego Men give me the creeps. → Aquatic Lifeforms you never caught while fishing - more evidence that life under the sea is beyond human comprehension. There are incredible gorgeous, cute and terrifying things down there. I mean, look at this thing. Need I say more? → Scientists unthaw eight-million-year-old bacteria - this sounds like the start of a horrible movie but is, unfortunately, reality. I'm all for learning from the past but unleashing a horde of microbes that devastates life as we know it is not cool. → Morgue - Refresh. Refresh. Refresh. → Mouth Wide Open - this is impressive but actually turns my stomach a bit too. |

Be Kind, Rewind » Blankenship clued me in to the fact that the official trailer for the new Michel Gondry film Be Kind, Rewind is now available online. Big Screen, Little Screen has a little bit of insight worth checking out and I must agree - this appears to be Gondry's most commercially accessible flick. Obviously it panders to a wide demographic of people in that anyone who watches movies will recognize the re-enactments and people love familiarity! That being said, the magnet in Jack Black's head being a ridiculous plot device only makes the film more alluring to me. This is a great vehicle for Gondry to play around with all those practical (read: non-CGI) effects he has mastered so well. |

Futurama Leakage » Let's all take a moment to be thankful for the goodness that is Comic-Con and the extreme proliferation of nerds with digital cameras featuring video modes. Without them, we would never be able to get a peak at this Leaked Futurama Trailer. Granted, it will be on TV / movies at some point but the exclusive underground feel of this abolishes any need for patience. The same mindset applies to that Iron Man footage but I'm not nerding out nearly as bad about that. Futurama returns! |

It's Really Happening » From Idiocracy: As the 21st Century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest reproduced in greater numbers than the rest. A process which had once favored the noblest traits of man now began to favor different traits... Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd it began to reward those who reproduced the most and left the intelligent to become an endangered species. From reality: A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry.Link via ARudd. |

Blue States - First Steps Into... » Awhile back I posted this video by Memphis Industries act Blue States - an imaginative and engaging video with a nice song to go along with it. I, unfortunately, sort of forgot about the band for a minute and have been scouring for some mp3's in the past day or so. While I hate to do the X + Y = Z band style comparisons I really want to describe it along the lines of 65 Days of Static meets Field Music. That is to say - upbeat, driving, mostly instrumental tunes but fueled by a pop sensibility rather than huge guitars. Regardless, all these tracks are worth a listen and I suggest finding a copy of First Steps Into... when it is released sometime in the fall. » Blue States - The Electric Complement

HallMonitor 12x12 » Hallmonitor has relaunched as 12" x 12" - Album Art Review & Repository. Yet another quality blog to add to your lists. |

A Superior Video Manager » Lately, I've been playing around with the services offered at Vimeo and forming an opinion on the whole experience. It's amazing to me to see something like YouTube explode in such a way when it is obviously inferior to its peers. So far the downside to the experience is that I just simply don't have that much video to share.. the one video that I did upload is intentionally mundane just because I was checking out the upload experience (very pleasant). So, maybe this is all old news to people but if you do have videos that you'd like to share online and, like me, hate the compression quality and the player controls provided by YouTube - Vimeo is probably your best place to manage them. |

Shave It or Save It? » Scott Neas is at a crossroads. He's been growing his beard for a little over a year in hopes of traveling to the World Beard and Moustache Championships but has since discovered he will now be unable to attend. So, the question is - Shave It or Save It? In an attempt to do some good with his hair follicle growing abilities Scott has setup two donations - one in favor of shaving, one in favor of saving. Any amount is acceptable but whichever fund has the most donations by August 14th will determine the winning side. |

MegaMan iPhone » While I am fascinated by the loads of iPhone hacking that's been going on since it's launch I can't say that I have much interest in invoking any of it on my own personal device. That being said, I do find the Mega Man II iPhone port to be one of the more impressively nerdy hacks I've seen for it. |
|
The Girl In The Tunnel » I caught this story on Wooster the other day and was sort of blown away. With so many street artists using imagery from old publications you would think it would be a bit more commonplace for this sort of thing to happen - but it's the first I've heard of it. It made me think of the Stripper Series from Jeremy and what would occur if any of those women came across any of the paintings and recognized themselves. A bizarre situation for sure. |

LeapFish - totally arbitrary? » Paul sent me a link to LeapFish.com - the "Domain Name Appraiser." Apparently they are able to determine the dollar worth of any given domain based on factors that they choose not to disclose. It's flattering to see that yewknee.com is worth $200,000 but given that there is no discernible way to decipher why it's worth that much, it does me no good. It is fun to try out some huge domains like Flickr or MySpace and watch their software freak out. Regardless, it's fun to see how much your domain is worth even if it's completely arbitrary. |

Movie Rundown » Sunshine - the new Danny Boyle directed sci-fi epic about a surprisingly small group of scientists sent to re-ignite the sun to save mankind. Visually this hit on all cylinders - I'm a sucker for just about any film featuring space stations of any kind. The antagonist of the story was unnecessary and, quite frankly, incredibly campy. The actual mission of the characters would have been enough in my opinion. Overall, great to see on the big screen but see it during a matinee and keep those expectations at a medium level. Trailer. The Bourne Ultimatum - for a series that has been touted as being a possible James Bond style franchise this was actually surprisingly low on the action and high on the wrapping up of things. It's a great fluff action movie but I really expected a whole lot more actual action. Trailer. Indie Sex: Part 2 - Taboos - another installment of the IFC Mini-Series about Sex and its role in cinema. A lot more directors were interviewed for this one (John Waters was particularly entertaining) and the series is shaping up to be every bit as good as I expect it to be. I really am baffled by the depressed role of sex in American cinema and how the majority of kids first exposure to such things is through horror films - sort of a bizarre combination. Zeitgeist - the allure of Conspiracy Theory films is undeniable but must always be consumed with the largest grain of salt you can find. "Facts" are thrown about without much source citing and glazed over so quickly that you have no time but to accept them as reality, possibly making notes to question them later. Zeitgeist is no exception but still an entertaining (and conversation sparking) viewing experience. I believe the entire thing can be watched online and if you have two hours to hear someone's take on Christianity, 9/11, the Federal Reserve Bank and how they all vaguely tie together. It is a good watch but must be questioned from start to finish (that doesn't mean it's all fabricated, just has to be carefully considered upon viewing). |

Emily Cash » This weekend I hit up the Nashville Art Walk and was privy to seeing new works by a number of great people. Among them was Emily Cash and her incredible cross sectional drawings of the human body. The pics from her website really don't do them the proper justice because the sheer magnitude of the pieces (both in size and detail) don't come across. As an added bonus, the pieces were all named after food dishes - so pieces like this or this are entitled "Cherry Pie" or "Porkchop" (respectively). Nice. |

The Pearce Sisters » Take a few minutes to watch these clips of the Aardman animation "The Pearce Sisters" (directed by Luis Cook). Supposedly the film was created by animating a majority of it in 3D, printing out the frames, drawing by hand over top of each frame and scanning the results. I'd believe it. You can see some great grabs from the short here. |
|
Bad Cover Art » In direct opposition to the goodness that is Sleevage I bring you Always judge an album by its cover, an article from The Guardian extolling what they believe is some of the worst cover art. With the exception of a few, I blatantly disagree. There are much worse out there (though, I would argue that some of those are amazing in their own way) but it's an interesting little read through either way. |

Next Big Nashville » Starting September 5th - 9th there will be a huge amount of shows around the Nashville metro area showcasing the "Best Of" local musicians. You can see the entire list of confirmed acts, so far, right here and it's quite a doozy. I'll probably have some recommended shows to highlight once the final lineups are announced but I'd be willing to bet most people will hit up the De Novo Dahl / The Features show on the 9th at Cannery Ballroom. My question is - where are the electronic acts in Nashville? We've got a slew of rock bands but what group of bands constitutes the heavy hitters when it comes to keyboards, samples, beats and experimentation? Plex Plex? Jensen Sportag? Makeup and Vanity Set? Inquiring minds want to know... |

VBS Meets... » VBS has a new interview show entitled VBS Meets... that has a ton of great people available for viewing. I'm very curious to watch the Charlotte Gainsburg / Michel Gondry interview but have, so far, only caught the Crispin Glover interview. Oddly, and unsurprising, he talks of his fight against commercial Hollywood and his thoughts on their inability to cultivate relevant and challenging art. Basically he means that no studio would give him the money to create his uber bizarre film, What Is It? The real paradox comes after you watch the trailer for said movie and then remember that it was created by the same guy who appeared in multiple Charlie's Angels movies, Epic Movie, and is set to play Grendel in the new Beowulf? The moral of this story is - Crispin Glover is an interesting guy and the interview is worth a few moments of your time. |

Sleevage - your new favorite site » Blankenship clued me in to Sleevage, a new blog showcasing outstanding, interesting or unique packaging for music artists. Seeing alternate versions that end up being more iconic than the originals or just perfectly executed ideas is engaging for whatever reason. Not all of the reviews have insight into the packaging they are showcasing (though sometimes, they do) but it's really more about bringing a load of great designs together into one place. Between Sleevage and the previously discovered Hard Format I'm now finding it easier to be distracted by any work tasks I have at hand. |

Hedi Slimane - Photography » The portfolio of photographer Hedi Slimane is immense - hundreds and hundreds of images to browse through, broken up by category. Jeremy Cowart - Photography » The photography portfolio of Jeremy Cowart has been re-envisioned, redesigned and (now) relaunched. Pulling in the help of Daniel Box, Matt Lehman, Daniel Ariza and Pixelgrazer he's created an enormous HTML / CSS based photography portfolio (2,326 photos at launch) - a rarity these days for sure. Jeremy's work is almost always focused on people in some form or another - a skill that he has honed through the years and is quite good at. However, I've always been a fan of his Polaroids , Typography and the more Experimental works. I realize he couldn't do this style all of the time otherwise it would become contrived and easy but it's nice that he still pushes himself to try new things and play around with his work. Great job to all involved in the project. I know it's been in development for an extremely long time and I'm sure it feels good to finally get it out there for the world to see. |

Why Your Free Time Is Boring » I picked up this article entitled Why Your Free Time is Boring from Paige and pretty much decided immediately that it was the most sensible piece of literature I'd read in some time. Welcome to August » The beginning of August may come as a shock to some but even more troubling is that Time May Not Exist at all. Scientists are having a hard time wrapping their brain around having time and quantum physics play nice. It's safe to say that if scientists are having a hard time with it, I'm completely lost. |
