Happy Halloween » Werewolf Bar Mitzvah Monster Parties: Fact or Fiction? The Monster Parties video has some NSFW things going on. Be forewarned but it's entirely worth watching multiple times. ADDENDUM: Halloween Jukebox - 118 songs to wrap your brain around. Happy Halloween everyone. |

Menomena : Hot Air » Tonight Menomena will play two shows in the Nashville area. First, at 6pm, they'll be packing people in at Grimeys. Then, they'll head over to the Exit/In to play a headlining slot with Illinois and Don Caballero. This is all great news indeed but what if you aren't able to make it to the show and have a serious Menomena itch to scratch? Well, please allow me to take care of that for you. Though it isn't documented very well, back when the band released their second album Under An Hour there were a few performances where a disc entitled Hot Air: B-Sides and Outtakes from Under An Hour was given out for free (so the story goes). I ran across said mix of songs on OiNK (r.i.p.) and have always enjoyed it. So, without further ado - here's an entire album of b-sides, outtakes and snippets of silliness from Menomena. » Menomena - Hot Air: Under An Hour B-Sides

Compare and Contrast » The Radar Magazine quiz Fox News Anchor or Porn Star? is an inspired bit of compare and contrast. Surprisingly (or maybe sadly) it's actually somewhat difficult to tell the difference. It's amazing what a bit of missing context will do. Via Chad. |

Crafts » I can't tell if the Hair Scarf is brilliant or just disgusting. Somehow, I think it's both. This crocheted Ewok is quite possibly the cutest thing I've seen in months.. and I don't typically swoon for crafts. There are a couple more but I'm not sure Wicket can be topped. Via Jessica. |

(bloody) Pixy » The Imaginary Girlfriend photo series is great. The diptych's are my favorites but the single images work quite well too. And if you're into that, there's a ton more to see here. |

Lars and the Real Girl » Last night I was fortunate enough to catch a pre-screening of Lars and the Real Girl, the latest Ryan Gosling film about a 27-year old who's heavy social stintedness gets the best of him and he orders a Real Doll to be his girlfriend. The concept is absurd, particularly when the whole town agrees not to call him out for it, but it somehow manages to work, very well in fact. The ensemble cast creates a believable small town crew that would actually respond in the way that they do. Ryan Gosling nails his part and pretty much solidifies himself in my mind as reason enough to see a film - always quite good. As you can imagine there are a lot of good humorous moments in the film but overal it is pretty heavy hearted. So don't go see it when you're in the mood for a Die Hard IV style thrill ride. Another word of advice, don't see the movie in your towns "rowdy" movie complex.. this is not a movie to be enjoyed with a crowd full of people commenting at the screen, bringing their fidgety kids, talking on the phone and having a general ineptness to handle on screen emotion. |

Nashville Scene interviews Menomena » The Nashville Scene recently interviewed Brent Knopf of Menomena as they are coming to town next Wednesday. That being said, the interview is actually quite entertaining and poignant at times. This is probably my favorite chunk: Scene: So you guys are pretty into using creative, well-thought-out album art—which is ironic considering that this is an era when people are buying fewer and fewer physical CDs.That is exactly the mentality that I'd love every band to have. Absolutely dead on. The only thing he fails to mention is the fact that great packaging can create a much more intense impression on a listener than a jpeg and mp3's - an experience that could stay with the person for a long long time. |

Halloween Mix - Et Tu, Morte? » I finally got my act together and posted this years Halloween mix, Et Tu, Morte?. I think it's a solid combination of creepy ambient songs, dark rock and a few completely jarring tracks. This is a much darker take on the mix than years past but it's still an enjoyable listen. And speaking of years past - it's only right that I put up the previous mixes, Songs for Spooks and Pure Terror, to fulfill any and all your Halloween mix needs. Please download the mix(es) and let me know what you think! |
|
Jape - "Floating" » Blake sent me a link to this video for a song called "Floating" by a band named Jape. The visual style of the video feels like a Target or IKEA commercial at first and then gets pretty weird at the end. Very much worth watching if only for the slow motion scenes of a guy getting smacked in the face with various fruits and vegetables. |

Gmail meet iMap » Apparently Gmail is now supporting iMap for their free services. For me, this is great news as it means I'll be able to sync up my iPhone with my Gmail account without creating redundant copies of email all over the place. The native Gmail support for POP mail on the iPhone was less than stellar in my opinion so my fingers are crossed that iMap will fix that all up. |

The Octopus Project - Hello, Avalanche » The Octopus Project has always managed to hit the nail directly on the head in terms of finding the proper balance between an electronic backbone and guitar fueled release. I'm not sure when or how I became aware of them but there's never been a time when I wasn't able to listen to them and find something enjoyable going on. So, with the release of their latest album, Hello, Avalanche, there was no doubt in my mind that I was going to enjoy it. And, lo and behold, I do. It's amazingly satisfying to really anticipate the release of an album and then actually have that album meet your expectations. It's also quite rare. Another factor in the greatness of the band is that they actually put a great deal of emphasis on the visual aesthetic of their packaging, merchandise and stage production. They've always had a good deal of merch that was unlike most bands (custom stuffed animals), giant creatures joining them onstage and packaging that was more than just some art a friend tossed together in a moment. Case and point, the insert that comes with the latest album is a fold out poster of a embroidered portrait of the band made by Jenny Hart (of Sublime Stitching, who are giving away copies of the album right now). The insert itself is actually sort of useless because who wants to hang up a folded up piece of slick paper on their wall but the fact that they had an embroidered portrait of themselves made is a fantastic little fact. Enough about all that.. on to the music. » The Octopus Project - I Saw The Bright Shinies

Trash Island » Did you know there is a heap of debris floating in the Pacific Ocean that is twice the size of Texas. Think about that for a moment. That's a lot of trash milling around together. Hyperlink Hodge Podge » Skull A Day - the name says it all. This one is dedicated to Ronnie and his month long endeavor to draw a skull a day. Gorilla Ashtray - even if you're not a smoker you have to appreciate the style of these guys. In Rainbows vs OK Computer - apparently there may be a lot more going on with the new Radiohead album than I could possibly perceive on my own. I mean, this whole Golden Section factoid certainly would have never occured to me but it's legit so maybe the new album really is a conceptual send up to OK Computer told through binary relations. The main problem being that if you coupled any two of their albums together it would probably sound complimentary. I guess it all boils down to how much nerd credit you want to give Radiohead. |

Weekend Movie Roundup » Great World of Sound opened here this weekend and I went to catch a showing. The character acting combined with the visual aesthetic of the film makes it feel like you're watching a well cut together documentary most of the time. This is a great vibe to have most of the time to pull in the audience but when things start to go sour you feel a whole lot more awful than you would if the film were setup as an obvious fictional piece. It was very well done and had many entertaining and worthwhile moments but the end of the film was, for me, quite a bummer. I really wanted to like Michael Clayton. I mean, a George Clooney lawyer drama with Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton and Syndney Pollack - what's not to like? Maybe it was the timing of when I saw it or maybe it was the film itself but I couldn't get behind the pacing and payoff. The acting was quite great, the film looked good and the characters / situations were believable but I have a hard time with movies that very slowly build for two hours and then have a fairly predictable payoff. The other folks that I saw it with disagree with my take on it so it's quite possible that I'm in the minority on this one. Yes, we rented Transmorphers hoping that the Transformers knock off would be just terrible enough that it would be amazingly hysterical. Unfortunately this was not the case. The movie certainly had its fair share of hilariously bad moments but mostly it was normal terrible moments. And for an 83 minute film it's a little annoying to not see any horribly rendered robots for the first 45 minutes. The trailer is really all you need. |

Chris Gilmour » Have you ever tried to make anything out of cardboard more intricate than a box, rectangle or fort? I have and it's not exactly an easy "medium" to work with. That being said, the works of Chris Gilmour are just that much more impressive. I simply can not imagine the patience, skill and resolve involved in making the likes of a lifesized typewriter, bike, piano or car all out of cardboard and glue. Look at this motorcycle! Impressed doesn't seem to cover my feelings on this one. |

This American Life » I finally got around to snagging the first televised season of This American Life and have been making my way through it the past week. Aside from the actual topics covered on the show I was very curious how one takes a radio show and manages to recreate it for television without losing all of the best parts. The huge benefit of the radio version is that you envision the characters yourself - the world being described really only exists in your head. With television you are looking directly at everyone speaking, there is no room for interpretation. Both methods have their benefits but they are in juxtaposition to one another for sure. Regardless, it's best to think of the two endeavors as mutually exclusive but with a commonality between them - like maternal twins with their own personalities but the same DNA. If you have a moment I highly suggest watching the first episode over on the Showtime site to get yourself hooked. |

Star Trek: Casting Comparison » The IGN Movies Star Trek Casting Comparison shows the old crew of the Enterprise vs. the new cast for the forthcoming JJ Abrams film. For the most part the choices are well done but I have to wonder - why are all these guys in Starfleet Academy at the same time? Bones is far older than Kirk, is he just a late bloomer? Maybe this is nerd talk that I shouldn't even bother to bring up but it's keeping me up at nights wondering about it. |

Cereal Killers » The Cereal Killer project is an awesome (truly, inspiring awe) collection of illustrations of Cereals that never were but probably should have been (except for a handful of them). Colbert Op-Ed » Stephen Colbert's shtick has an ebb and flow to me - sometimes his faux ego-maniacal absurdist ways are tiresome and sometimes they are absolutely brilliant. So when I saw that he had written an Op-Ed piece for the New York Times I was skeptical. However, with quotes like this: Our nation is at a Fork in the Road. Some say we should go Left; some say go Right. I say, “Doesn’t this thing have a reverse gear?” Let’s back this country up to a time before there were forks in the road — or even roads. Or forks, for that matter. I want to return to a simpler America where we ate our meat off the end of a sharpened stick.I was sold. Overall I think he's dialing back his faux conservative rantings and gunning more for calling everyone out - a formula that already works quite well on The Daily Show. Via Hynes. |

One Day This Will Be Possible » Friends With Managers have posted an updated to the fantastic looking Elemental icon theme that could be implemented on your iPhone assuming you've got it all hacked out. This is unfortunate for me because, at the moment, I do not. However, Apple just announced that they'll be opening up the iPhone to 3rd Party developers (with a proper SDK) starting in February. This is good news all around. |

The Darjeeling Limited » This weekend I caught a showing of The Darjeeling Limited with Miss Jodi Faye Bullock, a friend of mine with discerning taste, and high hopes that the movie would be another Wes Anderson classic to add to his filmography. I wanted to like it. I really did. I won't dive into too many specific details about what didn't sit right with me (as it is not out nationwide yet) but I will say this - the pacing was too slow, I had no interest in the characters and the humor was already spent on me from having seen the trailers. That being said it should also be noted that the film is beautiful. Wes Anderson has a visual aesthetic that absolutely can not be knocked. Maybe it's a trick you grow tired of but I'm certainly not at that point yet. Owen Wilson is charming and amusing as usual. Jason Schwartzman's moustache is glorious. If I had to rank Anderson's films this one would be at the bottom of the pile. There were several things that could have saved it (like actually showing Hotel Chevalier at the beginning instead of just saying "go to iTunes") but as it stands my interest level in seeing it again is low to non-existent. My friend with discerning taste agrees with me but please let me know if I'm off my rocker for feeling this way and just somehow missed the character connection. |

OS X - Leopard » Apple just announced that their next iteration of OS X, Leopard, will be released on October 26th. While I can't say that I'm excited to format my machine (always hate that process) I am pretty impressed by the massive list of forthcoming changes. I'm not wild on the space theme they're going for but with stuff like the improved Finder I think I can let it slide. |

The MP3 Music Blog Hype » Catbirdseat posted a bunch of links to a series of articles over at Pretty Goes With Pretty that I found intensely interesting. Basically it's an in-depth look at mp3 blogs and how they are either parodying or collapsing in on themselves. This topic may not be of much interest to alot of people but it struck a chord with me. Form your own opinions by reading the entire series (I know people don't like to actually read these days but it's something that should be done).

Nanodrives » According to this article it appears that hard drive development just took things to the next level. Hitachi has announced that they have developed a hard drive head that is in the 30 to 50 nanometer range or "about 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair." So, terabytes for the common household computer are well on the way, just wait a little bit longer. |

Why am I even posting this? » The Internet is filled with weird and bizarre things, that goes without saying. The FMSU art archive is certainly not the oddest thing I've ever seen (by far) nor am I into anime at all but the concept of taking popular characters and making them ridiculously fat is highly amusing to me. I can't explain it and won't even try to. Just enjoy the oddity for what it is. |

I'm a sucker for a great background texture, especially when it's coupled with just the right color palette. Quick Links Rundown » While I understand being presented with a multitude of links all at once is not ideal I still recommend visiting each and every one of these:
|
|
Raymond » Raymond (by Bif Pictures) is the odd tale of a lazy swimming instructor reaching out a group of scientists to help him overcome his sloth nature. The short film plays out like more of a 70's educational reel than it does anything else and I mean that in the best of ways. The effects used are humorous and intentionally over the top - and they work great but the overall aesthetic of the film - the coloring, the dirt, the saturation, the light leaks, etc - are what really kept me glued to it. The Gentle Deception of Artwork » Recently I received the forthcoming album from the band Edison Glass in my mailbox and thought to myself 'Hey, this could actually be good.' Despite the fact that the likelihood of getting some random disc in your hands from a promotions company is very low I tried it out. To sum it up, not for me. Not at all. But why was I drawn to it? Mostly because of the artwork actually. It did an incredible job of grabbing my attention and creating further interest in something I've never heard of. This would not have been the case had it been a 200 x 200 jpeg on a social network profile - it was the tactile experience that did it. So, I don't recommend really checking the band out unless you're into standard emo styled mall rock but give the artwork a peek if you see it lying around the record store one day. Then head over to Heads of State and congratulate those guys for making something great. |

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible » So, the Arcade Fire just released a new interactive online video experience for the title track off their latest record Neon Bible. Personally, I think this is pretty brilliant and the execution is nothing short of perfect. There has been some backlash towards the band from exhaustion of all the over hyping that occurred during their first record and the anticipation of the second but hopefully due credit will be given where credit is due. The site/video is quite engaging and makes me want to listen to the album again, so it's effective as well. |

Wilfrid Wood » Thanks to Crown Dozen I am enjoying the vaguely bizarre works of Wilfrid Wood. His creature creations look to me to be born of a single mold of gelatinous goo, at least that's the feeling I get from a lot of them. There's a ton to see on the site and discovering Leslie the Siamese Twin or Mrs Whipple is a special treat in and of itself. |

Adam West meet Frank Miller » I must agree with Falfa in that this coupling of classic Adam West style Batman and Frank Miller quotes is pretty brilliant. I would pick out my favorites of the bunch but I really think all of them are just dead on. Check them out. |

Winamp is 10 » Despite not being much of a Winamp user I have to give them congrats for being around for ten years and putting out lots of great software. Today, their birthday, marks the release of version 5.5 for them. Visually, they cleaned the default skin up majorly and it looks like it wouldn't be embarrassing to use anymore but the giant window approach is going to take some getting used to for dedicated Winamp fans. I'm sure it's optional. Regardless, good work Winamp, hopefully you can stay a competitive presence in the media software playing world. |

Whiskerino... soon » So I finally got my act together and put up a temporary page over at Whiskerino.org. There has been much discussion over what all should be involved in the new site but with only 23 days remaining still not a single piece of code has been written. Fortunately, this does not worry me as I have a framework from previous endeavours that should apply quite easily. Regardless, Whiskerino is on the way. Be sure to check out the message from Bobby and sh4wn. |

Black before Red » I've been meaning to post about Austin, TX outfit Black before Red for some time now. I included them on a mix way back in April but hadn't heard the entire album until somewhat recently. The full-length album Belgrave to Kings Circle is a collection of pop songs - pure and simple. Fortunately the term "pop" can run a wide gamut of definitions and should not be construed negatively in this particular review. As a total package - music / vocals / lyrics - they create my favorite style of pop, upbeat mixed with a tinge of sad. It's the same effect that The Shins, Stars or The New Pornographers put forth and it absolutely works. I highly suggest downloading everything from the bands site and dare anyone not to love "Underneath Gold." » Black before Red - Underneath Gold

We Own This Town #9 » If you are not familiar with We Own This Town I wouldn't be surprised. The site serves as a music show listing and podcast for Nashville area music enthusiasts. The shows are, by no means, a complete view of what's going on in the area but it acts as a filter for things that are to be considered "quality." The podcast consists of entirely local acts that are playing consistent shows, putting out new records or just making music that should be heard. That being said, I am happy to announce the ninth installment of the We Own This Town podcast put together by yours truly. This was my first foray into using GarageBand to compile a mix (so I could export it as one single mp3) and it was quite pleasant (albeit chuggy at times). So, please go and download We Own This Town #9.. there are lots of great bands on there and I think everyone will enjoy it. |

Convenience vs Hubris » This article regarding Convenience vs. Hubris is a great read. It gives a great history of the commercial mp3 from someone who was actually deeply entrenched in the fact that labels / web conglomerates just weren't willing to accept the format (still aren't) and his take on where to go next. I think this little snippet sums things up pretty nicely: Inconvenient experiences don’t have Web-scale potential, and platforms which monetize the gigantic scale of the Web is the only way to compete with the control you’ve lost, the only way to reclaim value in the music industry. If your consultants are telling you anything else, they are wrong. But if you're a fan of well written takes on the music industry from intelligent individuals who are actually neck deep in the situation don't let that quote be all you read. |
