Please Please » Please Please Please let this be real. There are so many wonderful things going on with this that if it were a ruse I'd be crushed. |
Land of the Cute-Seas » The Land of the Cute-Seas portfolio has a plethora of plush creatures for your perusal. The 'Wet' variety is more up my alley - taking a typically creepy sea creature and cranking the cuteness level up to 150% - always entertaining. |
RCRD LBL » Has RCRD LBL been around for awhile and I've just been ignorant to its greatness? Apparently it's an mp3 blog / record label partnered with the likes of WARP, Modular, DIM MAK, Turntable Lab and more. Aside from having some enjoyable blog content they've also got a number of exclusive downloads from a handful of 'unsigned' artists (or maybe they are signed to RCRD LBL? not sure). Either way, do yourself a favor; snag these two tracks and keep on eye on their blog. » White Denim - World As A Waiting Room
» Bad Veins - Gold and Warm

Weird Links » This eBay auction comes with a special delivery. Maybe too special. German artist uses beard as paintbrush in Thailand Studio. Yet another reason not to let facial hair dread up.. I imagine that thing stinks. Dear Rockers - a blog of people directly sending money to artists as repayment for their indiscretions or just to thank them in some way. The letters are amusing but the idea is absurd - as if the money or story ever even reaches the artists or that they would really appreciate $5. |

KNI Portfolio Update: HD DVD » After all this talk about how much work I've been doing lately it's my honor to announce that KNI has officially launched and added HD DVD to our portfolio. The site was many months of work but I think the outcome was absolutely worth it. My favorite KNI sites are the ones that involve everyone being involved and this was most certainly one of them. There are still some tweaks / additions to be made to the site but you can take a look and enjoy the newness! |

Cats Let Nothing Darken Their Roar » Paige has started regularly posting a number of holiday gift ideas over on Flux-Rad. This type calendar is one of those items and it is faantastic. The concept is simple, the execution is perfect. There is a 2006 version as well that is just as entertaining to look at. |

LOST: Missing Pieces » Apparently ABC is running a series of webisodes for LOST called Missing Pieces that contain quick interactions between characters during unspecified portions of the overall LOST timeline. These vignettes reveal nothing in terms of the grand scheme of things and don't seem to be that well written (see: "Hurley and Frogurt"). So, what's the point? Apparently anything related to LOST is enough to get people watching, even if it's a complete waste of time. And is it even necessary to tease people for an upcoming show that only has half of its episodes filmed? |
Dr. Pepper really on top of things » Hey Dr. Pepper / Coca-Cola Company - good job jumping on that viral video Internet bandwagon. You paid for a legit music video to be made of Tay Zonday's "Chocolate Rain" and it's called "Cherry Chocolate Rain"! You understand how quickly the Internet moves and that trends come and go with lightning speed, so you're really on top of things with this commercial! Lame. |

The Big Sleep - Sleep Forever » Relative Theory Records (now The Boot) gave me many many musical recommendations to be thankful for but The Big Sleep is one that seems to have resonated with me far more than others. I find myself listening to their debut, Son of the Tiger, rather frequently and was very excited to see that they have a new album on the horizon. Sleep Forever comes out Feb. 19th via French Kiss and sounds like it's going to be similar to the previous disc - huge guitar wall of sound with a penchant for ethereal vocals. The My Bloody Valentine comparison is probably made far too often but I think there is some legitimacy in comparing the two - at least in terms of existing in the same basic genre. » The Big Sleep - Pinkies

Hi, Bye » It's possible that this image is one of the greatest things I've seen all year. But that notion happens about 10 times a second when viewing FFFound!. I mean, look at this or this or this or this or this! It's enough to make your head explode (figuratively). |
Light-emitting wallpaper » I can't really imagine the expense involved in actually purchasing this light-emitting wallpaper but the results of it are certainly incredible. The best part of it being that the light source can be turned off and it appears to be just a regular wall dressing. Via Jessica. |
A Cure for Cancer - via Radio Waves » Mac directed me to this article yesterday and I was more than a bit blown away. Oddly, it sort of reads like a Readers Digest expose on one man's struggle against cancer and his own self-made discoveries of combining RF Signals and nanotechnology in a fight against cancer. Basically it's so ultra positive that it's almost unbelievable until you do a little more basic digging and find that the background is legit and the published research is true. It's rather amazing to read about such an ingenius combination of old technology fused with the brand new in order to possibly overcome an illness that's been unconquerable for some time. I suggest everyone read the full article despite it's lack of pretty pictures. |

Temples of Humankind - World's 8th Wonder? » Ryan just clued me in to what the Italian government is calling The Eighth Wonder of the World aka "The Temples of Damanhur" or "The Temples of Humankind." Basically, a small team of people began carving these enormous rooms out of a remote mountain some 30 years ago and the results are quite impressive. The most compelling aspect of the creation is the variety of styles found throughout the rooms. Everything from Egyptian hieroglyphics, "trippy" 70's style collages, traditional stained glass and nu-age Orb dedication can be found. Is it the eighth wonder of the world? Maybe not but it's certainly a contender if there ever was one. |
Jude Buffum - Pixel Artist » Mixing political commentary with nostalgic pixel canvas art is not an easy task but Jude Buffum manages to make it work. This Ring of Liar piece is entertaining just to see Dick Cheney with a King Hippo band-aid holding him together but there are other pieces that push the political point a little further. But don't get the wrong idea, there are plenty of other works (and Plush friends) to diversify the work. Link via Jessica. |
French Paper - Wrapping Paper Style » If you were the type of person that felt so inclined to really go the extra mile with your Christmas / gift-wrapping might I suggest the French Paper Gift Wrap Selections? The wood paneling is high on my list of necessary purchases for this Holiday season but there are many other great patterns worth investigating. |

Tethering the iPhone » File this one under: So Obvious It Should Be A Legit Feature. This article, Tethering the iPhone, instructs you on how to hook up your MacBook to your iPhone and use it's internet connection for your laptop. Maybe once AT&T switches off of the EDGE network and goes 3G it will be really worth investing your time in. |

Thanksgiving Vegetation » This Thanksgiving break provided a much needed reprieve from the world of computing / coding / overworking and allowed me to vegetate my brain on quite a few films / tv shows. SNL sans-writers » Despite the writers strike, SNL cast members pulled together and performed in the UCB Theatre in Chelsea with a range of banned or un-aired material for a small audience. Michael Cera hosted and the rest of this slideshow makes it look like it was probably a pretty good time. My question is - how long until this leaks on to YouTube? 5 days? A week? 2 Months? Assuming it was filmed to some capacity it will be interesting to see how long it takes to show up. |
Drobo Storage » Madrid clued me in to the existence of Drobo yesterday - "the world's first storage robot." Basically it's an array of hard drives that's smart enough to add and remove capacity on the fly. The demo is actually pretty impressive (love the music) but I have to wonder if $500 for such a device is just a bit over the top. |
Kevin Shields Interview at VBS » VBS / Soft Focus has an interview up with Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine. He and Ian Svenonius talk about the impending new album, the bands sound in general and why the bands Spirit Vehicle is a glider. Overall I was pretty shocked to see an interview with Shields since he's mostly shut-in and obviously somewhat uncomfortable being interviewed but he sounds confident in his projection that there will actually be a "new" My Bloody Valentine record and it sounds like it will be based off of material that was abandoned in the mid-90's. Now what about that boxset? |

Cloverfield - 1 · 18 · 08 » So the official trailer for the JJ Abrams produced (Matt Reeves directed) film Cloverfield has hit the Interwebs. It actually manages to maintain the same creepy mysterious vibe of the teaser without giving anything away. It shows a handful of epic images and intense anomalies but you don't really see anything (except for a woman's silhouette seemingly expanding to burst). Always the skeptic I am curious if the full film will be able to deliver on all the hype they've created but so far, so good. Count me intrigued. |
S i f e artworks » Many illustrations to be found in this Flickr set from S I F E * but I must say that this one is certainly my favorite of the group. |
The Joys of Being a Nerd » I can't tell if the PixelNinja Cosplay Gallery is meant to appeal to nerds or if it's an honest expression for a love of all things supremely nerdy. I mean, Samus Aran is basic enough but who is Miyabi? I'm not sure it matters but you gotta give credit for some serious investment in the costuming. |
The Bearded Cap » How could I not post this? The "Bearded Cap" is brought to us by Icelandic design group Vik Prjonsdottir. They actually have a bunch of fun designs - like "The Twosome Blanket" but obviously my interest lies in the knitted glory of the Bearded Cap. It can procured at less than a handful of retailers - including one in New York and I hear it runs for a cool $135. Thanks to everyone who sent this one in. |

Apes & Androids - Blood Moon » I've been following Apes & Androids for awhile now in hopes that they could fill the void of their previous project, Call Florence Pow. The band just announced that they'll be releasing Blood Moon "soon" and have put the first track up on their site for download. The music is dance-y, extremely layered and a bit crazed - a great combination. Personally I think "Golden Prize" isn't the best representation of what the band is capable of but I'm hoping it ends up being a nice tease for the forthcoming full length. |

Wonderful Union » Seattle's Asterik Studio split into two factions - Invisible Creature and, now with a website, Wonderful Union. The show reel is top notch, as are the Case Studies but mostly I'm just glad that such a great company has their official web presence up and running. |

Friday Videos - Nov. 16th, 2007 » Chocolade Haas Martial Arts Auditions Mark Ronson - Oh My God 'Top Chef' Ad - WARNING Italian Spiderman Oposum Squirrel - Martial Arts Auditions: I think most of this is fake but I still believe the backflip guy is completely legit. - Mark Ronson - Oh My God: Is this a "tribute" to Roger Rabbit or a total rip job? I'm going with tribute but it doesn't do the song justice. - Top Chef Ad: Kinda gruesome but the shock value is the draw. - Italian Spiderman: Fake but worth watching the first 45 seconds or so. - Opossum Squirrel: I think this fills your cute video quota for the week. Have a great weekend. |
The Superest of them all? » Ryan directed me to The Superest the other day. An illustrated battle of quasi-heroes - each one outdoing the previous with a very particular superpower. The illustration styles are incredible and as the series continues they just get more and more accurate in their power struggle. Start at the very bottom and scroll up through the back and forth. By the time you reach Albinis vs. the 6 Year-Old Girl you'll be hooked. |
Awkward Local News » I love it when local news anchors have to report on something they feel somewhat awkward about. Such is the case with this WMC-TV report about a "Furries" convention in Memphis. If you aren't familiar with the concept of Furries I'd direct you to a Google Image search but I don't want to be the one responsible for exposing you to that world. Regardless, it's not the sort of thing that the local news should probably be reporting on but I'm glad that they did... hilarious. |
How I Became The Bomb - Harvest » Looks like How I Became The Bomb are dangling a carrot for those willing to sign up to the mailing list. If you're up to hearing about what's new with the band you'll be rewarded with an mp3 of their new song "Harvest." Typically I would just link it here but since I'm buddy buddy with the band I'm going to force you to go through the official channels if you want to snag it. |

Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals » Because of the pop-culture cave I've been living in lately brought on by my work load and other projects I easily fall behind on what's the "hot new music" floating around in the blogosphere. I actually think of this as a very good thing as the hype falls to the side and if I run across something worthwhile it's worthwhile because it's good to my ears, not because I heard it was worth checking out. Such is the case with Yeasayer, a band from Brooklyn that creates a dark, somewhat tribal, extremely layered, very vocal style of music. If I had to name some contemporaries I'd put them alongside Grizzly Bear or Animal Collective but never quite as striking or weird (respectively) as either one. I've even seen comparisons to Peter Gabriel and Fleetwood Mac with the tiny bit of reading I've done but that seems to be taking things too far. I recommend starting with "2080" and putting that on repeat as it is easily the most accessible from the album but then be sure to dive in to the rest of All Hour Cymbals as it is an album meant to be enjoyed as a whole, not as a picked apart tracklisting. » Yeasayer - 2080
» Yeasayer - Forgiveness

Tree Man » Dede is an Indonesian man with a very rare and unique problem - a combination of HPV and a rare genetic fault that "impedes his immune system." These two things combined create tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" emitting from his hands and feet. It's quite a sight to see. The human body is capable of some seriously bizarre abnormalities but this one seems right out of a bad dream (or a music video or a great book). Fortunately the main point of the story is that Dede is getting help via synthesized Vitamin A that may cure him of this ailment. |
Darkon: The Movie » I recently watched the IFC documentary Darkon. If you've not heard of this, or don't know what LARPing is, you should go and watch the trailer immediately. Basically the movie follows a group of LARPers and contrasts their daily lives with the life of their Darkon character. Overall, it's fascinating and I absolutely recommend watching it. I think what struck me most about the film is that the people involved in the LARPing world keep saying they "don't get to be a hero in the real world" - as if the lives they lead outside of the mythical realm are incapable of making them a worthwhile individual. It's a self perpetuating downward spiral of shame to think that the only way you can achieve greatness in anyones eyes is to wield a foam sword and lead 30 of your friends into faux battle. Maybe the meaning behind the word "hero" has become skewed over the past few years but seems like there could be an easier way to gamble with your self esteem. So, aside from that little rant, it really is a great film. The Dark Elves are, far and away, the most impressive group of LARPers featured in the film, seemingly taking it to a lifestyle level as opposed to some weekend getaway. |

Gibson Robot Guitar » Not being much of a musician myself you'd think the hub bub about the newly announced, self-tuning, Gibson Robot Guitar would have passed me right by. Not so! Obviously I have some issues with the fusion of technology and musicianship when it comes to digitally enhancing a performance but even more so I have a problem with the fact that they called this Robot Guitar. Seriously? I realize they are just going with the text book definition of the word by saying "this does human tasks automatically!" but the word 'Robot' means so much more these days. At the very least they could have put some sort of signifigant number or descriptor in the name - i.e. Mega Robot Guitar 9000 or Ultra Shredder Automator Robot Guitar 600X. If this is the future at least make it sound like the future. |

KUT Retread Sessions » Recently the KUT Retread Sessions launched live for the web to enjoy. What are the Retread Sessions you ask? Conceptually it's like the Take Away Shows or Daytrotter in that it creates exclusive performances from musicians and shares them with the world, for free. The Retread Sessions haven't been around for too long but the performances, video quality and audio fidelity take things to a new level. Listening to the Yacht session for "See A Penny Pick It Up" I can't even believe it's a live recording. The audio geniuses at Super! Alright! are working some magic beyond my comprehension. Long story short, you need to go ahead and add this site to your RSS reader and keep up with all that they have to offer. In the meantime, make sure you watch every single session they offer, you'll thank yourself later. Many thanks to Flux-Rad for not only cluing me in to the existence of this project but actually being the driving force behind it. |
Wax Fang - La La Land » Typically I'm not so into the soaring, reverb heavy Wall of Sound style rock ala Band of Horses or My Morning Jacket (with a few specific track exceptions) but after seeing Wax Fang during this years Next Big Nashville festival I may have to reconsider my opinion. The band is releasing the full-length debut La La Land this weekend and will be playing at The Basement this Friday with Hotpipes. I imagine seeing them in such a small venue will easily equate to ear bleeding volumes of sound but, for a rock band, that's a great compliment. So, I've only heard a few tracks from the album (one linked for download below) but you can preview more on their MySpace page. The album sounds like it captures the essence of the bands live performance but takes it even further by layering on loads more sound and subtleties. Check it out and see for yourself. » Wax Fang - World War II (Part 2)

Big Happy Funhouse » The photo archives found at Big Happy Funhouse are much in the same style as Shorpy but not quite as antiquated. I'm not sure why vintage photos have the appeal that they do but there's just something about the feel of actual film that digital just hasn't been able to replace - not to mention the fact somehow all of these photos seem to capture moments in time that just don't happen these day. I mean, when's the last time you saw a modern gem like this? And never have I appreciated wood paneling more than I do here. |
Hayden Christensen is in terrible movies » Have you seen the trailer for Jumper? How about the trailer for Awake? Do you know what these movies have in common? Both star Hayden Christensen and both look absolutely awful. Now, it's not like I expected much from the guy who played the super stinted Anakin Skywalker but just because someone was involved in the largest commercial franchise of our generation is that reason to keep pumping out movies with them in it? Doesn't the movie still need to have some appeal? Regardless, this isn't about the lack of appeal on Christensen's part (to me) but rather about how ridiculous that Jumper movie looks. Seriously, go watch the trailer and tell me it's not like a suped up version of Clockstoppers. |
Octo Glass » You know, cephalopods are probably getting as played out in popular culture as the ninja or the wizard (but not the hobo) but I'm still absolutely sold on them. This glass sculpture is absolutely incredible looking. Granted, it's probably beyond delicate and a completely wasteful purchase but that doesn't take away from how drawn to it I am. Via Chad. |

Whiskerbears » One of the greatest parts of Whiskerino (aside from the distraction / photos / comradery) is that it inspires people to create some incredible things. The dubstyle Itch short film and the Ryan Hale "Beard Until Death" print quickly come to mind. This year will, hopefully, be no different. In fact, I've already stumbled upon one great creation - the Whiskerbear, created by Whiskerino participant Phil. These little guys are the best combination of creepy and cute - always a winner. I hope more are in the works. |

WIRED Science: Analog vs Digital » Analog vs. Digital side note: thumbs down to WIRED for creating a viral video player that can't scale down at all. Sorry for the huge video post, I had no other option. |
Album Collage » Since I've been lax on posting lately this is probably old news already but the Matching Album Covers gallery is pretty fantastic. The concept is simple (associate and overlay different album covers to create a new composition) and the execution is almost perfect. The only thing that bugs me is that a few collages have one cover that's scaled down about 25%.. while the tiny covers work well, it seems like cheating. But any work of art that can create Tom Jones on a skateboard is worth investigating to me. |
Jenkem - also known as WTF?! » While I'm not shocked that there is some new drug craze hitting the streets I have to say the details on Jenkem kind of blew my mind. According to this it's an inhalant created from raw sewage that induces hallucinations. Re-read that. Raw Sewage Inhalant. I thought Ketamine was an odd thing for kids to be getting into, or even paint huffing, but raw sewage. That's just ridiculous. Update: Chad points out that this is likely a hoax (that I fell for) but also a great goof to get those desperate for a new high to "huff their own pee and poo." |
Friends With Sites » A couple friends have launched / re-launched some projects you should know about: Paul has re-launched his photography portfolio over at Wise Acre Photo. The format is easy to use and, while quite nice, the design does a great job of staying out of the way of the photos. He's also enabled Comments for every photo, so if there is one in particular that you enjoy, let him know. So Serious is the secondary blog of Joshua Blankenship. As his current site is more prone to 2 or 3 sentence posts at most, he has created a place for himself that will allow a bit more expounding on certain topics. He's off to a good start. While not technically friends, I have always been a fan of Cobra Creative and all that they do. They've recently updated their portfolio and the new goods are every bit as enjoyable as the previous works. |

Frazzled » My head is all loopy from being entrenched in so much code lately. I've got some serious business to attend to at work and I've got the mad Whiskerino distraction going on as well. Tim & Eric + Live = Humor? » Is there any way that you can take the bizarreness of Tim & Eric and have it translate to a live broadcast? Not a live performance per se but rather an actual live Internet stream? I'm thinking the awkward quotient will raise by about 300%, easily. But anyone that is able to generate this gem is worth giving a chance or two. I guess I'll find out on November 6th if it works or not. |
Catch A Squirrel? » So Daniel and I have been having a debate recently. If given the proper incentive (say: a large sum of money) would you be able to catch a squirrel with just your bare hands? No nets, traps or trickery - just man vs. small beast. Could you do it? |
Autolux Return? » It's been way too long since I've heard any concrete news about new music from Autolux but judging from these photos it seems that they're slowly coming back around. I really need a properly recorded version of "Reappearing." If you've not heard it, you may download the following live mp3 but it doesn't do the song proper justice. » Autolux - Reappearing (Live)

Whiskerino Whisper » So, yea, Whiskerino launched. I've barely slept in the past 3 days trying to get it together and it is, of course, riddled with bugs and half assed styling. The stress levels that this thing induces in me are absurd and I question why I continue to do them at all. But that's neither here nor there. The site is up.. people seem to be enjoying it despite the shoddy code aspect and hopefully I'll be able to slowly hammer stuff out. More on all this once I get some sleep and answer the 50+ emails of people inquiring why they can't register / login / upload / etc. |
