last nights show
Last night sort of marked the beginning of a long string of concerts around the Nashville area that should be pretty entertaining.. if for nothing more than the fact that Nashville is actually having shows come in which is quite odd.Apollo Up brought a great, albeit short, set to start things off. The two newest songs that they've been playing show off the bands fondness for metal and huge riffs without it being too incredibly inappropriate. Nice to see a band that you enjoy growing and trying different things.
French Toast tricked me. The writeup of their album seems to insinuate that they have some keyboards, samples, loops - none of which existed in the live environment. Apparently one of the members used to play with Fugazi and the other two guys are pretty well tied in with the same DC scene. Apparently this directly equates to the fact that their show was rather boring and completely unoriginal yet still backed by Dischord Records. Lame.
Supersystem (mp3) was a refreshing breath after sitting through French Toast. They reminded me of a hybrid of The Faint and !!!. The band members were all very energetic and willing to dance their asses off to their own music - something you gotta respect. The downfall was that after about 4 songs if you weren't completely entranced by the beats it got ridiculously repetitive and somewhat boring. As talented as they were, I was expecting song structure more similar to that of a rock band than that of a trance dance outfit. Overall, a solid performance and worth seeing but I didn't need to see it all to get the point.
