accidental movie weekend
Without even thinking about I ended up seeing a movie every night this weekend.Friday I caught the new Strangers With Candy movie. The main cast from the TV series is pretty much intact (Orlando, Jerri's father and brother have been recast) and the movie feels like one long episode, though not in a bad way. If it were an episode that dragged on for an hour and a half I'd be complaining but it's an hour and a half of blissful quotes and ridiculous situations. The dynamic between Colbert and Dinello is always funny and few people can berate each other like Sedaris and Colbert. Oh, and don't get me started on Principal Onyx Blackman - pure genius!
Our local independent theatre, The Belcourt, is having a late night movie series which featured Evil Dead 2 this week. I won't even go into the shame involved with the fact that I've managed to never see this one before now but it's basically what every entertaining movie should strive to be. It doesn't mess around with a ton of plot building, it just dives right in and keeps going until the end. Hilarious and amazing.. now I need to rewatch Army of Darkness.
Sunday night I decided to go check out Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. Ugh - no deal. Can someone please tell the directors / writers / producers that not all big movies need to be insanely long? I don't feel like I'm getting any more bang for my buck when you make me sit through 150 minutes of story that could easily have been told in 90 minutes. The story itself was disjointed.. sloppy even.. and half of the situations didn't even make sense. Granted, it's a movie that exists to let the viewer turn their brain off for awhile and be entertained but it took its toll on me. I really should have gone to see A Scanner Darkly instead.
