Nashville Rollergirls

This weekend I attended my first roller derby - the Nashville Rollergirls vs Birmingham's Tragic City Rollers - and I must say, it was a real treat. I had almost zero idea of how the whole thing would go down but after a handful of "jams" you figure it out.

The fact that the whole event was put together by local enthusiasts and not a huge corporate event was obvious and completely appreciated. You could tell everyone involved was really enjoying themselves because they wanted to be there. The Rollergirls themselves were tough (and hilariously nicknamed - Slammylou Harris being the most appropriately Nashville themed one) but, thankfully, never seemed to take the aggression inherently involved in the game to a level of gross display. It was great to see people putting their whole selves into a competition but being able to joke around immediately between rounds - never missing a beat of competition.

Long story short, if you have the chance to see some Roller Derby in your area, do it! Even more so, if the Nashville Rollergirls hit up a town near you - go support them!
