Moustache May

posted April 23, 2004 #

Okay, so it's almost May... and you know what that means, right? Moustache May is here. The time of year when, for a month, we celebrate the glory of the moustache. Not unlike the Beard Contest, Moustache May is open to anyone willing to glorify their moustache to the internet world. No rules about shaving clean this time, so start growing now and let me know if you're in to grow / cultivate / glorify your moustache for the month of May.

World's best essay right there. Just read the first paragraph, you'll be hooked.

the hand of the major label

posted April 23, 2004 #

According to this thread on the Autolux.org message board regarding the release of Future Perfect. Basically, the parent company of their label (Columbia owns DMZ, Sony owns Columbia) signed the band based on T. Bone Burnett's recommendation but really hadn't heard them or knew what they were getting into. So now, the parent label has officially decided it will try and release the album - but that it needs another 3+ months to setup promotions and press. So possibly look for a July / August release date.

And if you're willing to brave the waters, there are some cool photos from the bands performance at the Getty Museum.

new MM

New Modest Mouse EP over at the iTunes store. Not sure if either song is really worth it, but if you've got some Pepsi caps lying around it might be decent.

frogeye

posted April 23, 2004 #

Looks like the people at LOMO have a new underwater camera - the Frogeye, Resistant to water up to 12 feet.. and the photo outcome looks pretty good. Of course, it's $75 and you could just buy an underwater camera case at $10.. but that's neither here nor there.

banksy art installation

posted April 22, 2004 #

Check this article on the latest Banksy art installation - a stuffed rat he installed in the Natural History Museum. Aside from him pulling this off, again, it should be noted that the article tells his real name - a first for both myself and Ryan to read in print. Wonder why he's letting go of the anonymity?

destroy it by viewing it

posted April 22, 2004 #

Interesting art project entitled goodbye romania. The concept is that each time the images are viewed a random pixel is removed from the photo. So, the more people that view it.. the faster it destroys itself. Lots of other interesting projects here.. including a plant that is watered based on a program finding the word "water" somewhere in international news sites.

for the record...

Sublime sucks. They sucked before that guy died, and they are just as terrible now. No disrespect to those of you who somehow manage to enjoy them, but I feel for you. Definetly in top 5 worst bands ever.

Also, why does everyone love !!! (Chk Chk Chk) ? I certainly have my moments of not-so-impeccable taste, but man.. I can't deal.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 23.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.

"But outside these fault-tolerant environments, the symptoms of disease and decay have already started to appear."
Designing with Web Standards - Jeffrey Zeldman

From Airbag, who got it from Asterik, who got it from Peter Merholz, who got it from Caterina who got it from David Chess, from Long Story Short Pier, from a whole bunch of livejournal users.....(Daniel is convinced he can trace it back to it's origin.. but I can't go farther than that).

So what is your nearby quote?

Most of you probably won't be able to appreciate this, but check this CSS2 Text-Shadow demo in Safari. Pretty amazing in Safari.. pretty much useless in any other browser.

darko re-release

posted April 21, 2004 #

Apparently Donnie Darko director Richard Kelley thinks he is George Lucas - as the re-release of his film is actually going to happen. While I'm all for a directors cut, I really don't see the need to re-release the film.. it's very strong as it is, why potentially screw that up?

Well, many thanks to everyone who posted some insight regarding my computer woes. I bought a power supply and it seems to have temporarily fixed things. Hopefully this will not happen again, but I am still interested in getting a new machine that isn't teetering on the edge of self-destruction. I will investigate all the links given and hopefully make an affordable decision soon.

consider it fried

posted April 19, 2004 #

So while working on some freelance web stuff for The Features, my computer shut off.. sparks flew out the power supply, and smoke started rising. I think it goes without saying that my home PC is rather fried.. I hope that it's only the power supply but you never know.. maybe it's the processors. So, what is the publics opinion on buying computers from retails chains like Best Buy or CompUSA? Is it a decent deal? How about Dell or Gateway? I'm assuming that anything outside of making your own isn't going to be a great deal, but there's gotta be something decent out there.. I need a PC damnit!

juxtaposition

posted April 19, 2004 #

I love the juxtaposition of this insane 3D CGI robot-sentry in real life style movie against this equally insane in a different way Betty Boop cartoon. Don't be a punk and skip out on the Boop cartoon, it's worth the viewing...

ratatat!!

posted April 19, 2004 #

I completely forgot that the full-length Ratatat album comes out tomorrow. Thank you iCE. Oh, and the band has a full on website now instead of just that one pager (great photo's section.. absolutely love those cutouts).
