hot spam

posted March 31, 2004 #

You know.. everyone gets the seriously odd Spam mail from time to time, but I believe this one is my favorite to date:

"If he perform a serious operation on an ass or ox, and kill it, he shall pay the owner one-fourth of its value. "

Amazing.

Someone try out MaxiVista and let me know how it goes. Pretty interesting way of adding a second monitor without actually purchasing a second monitor or comparable video card.

more goodness

More design goodness from non-format - though that oversized pixel font definetly looks a little wacky while it's animating.

victory league wins

posted March 31, 2004 #

I think I enjoyed every single item in the Victory League portfolio. The "Queen Record" was particularly cool but I can't hate on the Destination Book System, Visiting Artists Lecture posters, or any of the works. Great combo of silkscreening, print design, and usage of apparel.

eternal science

Mason linked this article about the science behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Interesting read, though I think they missed the point.

art + news

The NewsMap web application is pretty rad. It's a "constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator." Art meets current news. Very nice, and impressive. Link via dbox.

3d goodness

posted March 30, 2004 #

This week my friend Josh has made it his mission to send me a daily 3D render of uncomparable magnitude. Here is the Monday entry.. entitled "GHOST." Today is "2 for Tuesdays" - so here ya go. Gem #1, Gem #2. Thank you Josh.. more tomorrow.

black kong

posted March 30, 2004 #

This billboard article is interesting for two reasons. 1) Jack Black cast as Carl Denham in the Peter Jackson remake of King Kong. 2) The Tenacious D movie, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, is supposedly set for an April 1st, 2005 release. Possibly the best April Fools day ever?

design, photography, etc

posted March 30, 2004 #

Let's try another bunch of links in one post and see how that goes over.

The photography at gdelin is rather nice (Wes Anderson, crazy prison style Vincent Gallo, Zubin Meta - no idea, but super hot photo, and loads more).

Jon also recommends checking out BA-Reps for links to loads more quality photographers.

Nice simple, and quick, portfolio from Stylo.

A bit of new goodness from Evil Pupil.

Thrills / Phantom Planet Player - while typically this would be a music entry.. I really enjoy the design of it. Rare to see a juke shared between two artists... and that nav is keen! Cooper Black.. what?

Webmaster Republic seems to have some worthy links and might be worth a daily visit.

visionaire

posted March 30, 2004 #

And since I'm stealing links from him, I'll go ahead and link up Visionaire. , a hand crafted magazine. While I agree that $625 is a bit steep for a subscription price, I can see why it costs so much. The issues exist in limited quantities and look extremely well crafted.... one of the issues is a custom garment, another printed without ink, one a custom case from Louis Vuitton, and apparently most of them (if not all) have at a bit of handmade love .. c'mon, that's nuts.

happy pets

I dunno where Chad finds this stuff, but Happy Pets has a great bunch of posters and shirts. Inspiration abound!

dubya is a dumbass

posted March 30, 2004 #

I actually caught a bit of this the other day and was a bit flustered at the fact that the lack of WMD discovery is already a joking matter to the administration. Apparently others aren't too pleased with it either. I suppose in the end, it was just a dumb joke to at a meaningless black-tie dinner.. but you'd think for a televised event, and a subject as touchy as war, you'd read over your jokes a bit more closely.

PC Cube

posted March 29, 2004 #

Sibhod showed me the XC Cube - a quaint little Small Form Factor PC that resembles the short-lived Apple Cube. Overall I'd say the tiny computer is somewhat a novelty but this thing looks rather souped up.. nice to see that the oversized tower may be slowly becoming extinct.

3-29 catchup

posted March 29, 2004 #

Due to Dreamhost being down for a large portion of the morning (supposedly from DDoS attacks, but who knows) I have been unable to properly browse. Because if I can't share what I see, what good is it? Regardless, here's a Catchdubs style post of a bunch of stuff you should probably see.

Very interesting read on Stanley Kubrick from the Guadian entitled Citizen Kubrick. Basically it tells the story of one reporter being given access to the massive wealth of information that Kubrick stockpiled over the years. Thanks for the link Ryan.

New David Cross disc in May. via Slatch.

More about the Coffee and Cigarettes film, with some nice little flash animation teasers.. also via Slatch.

New Supergrass DVD in June with 2 discs of stuff and a 21 track Best Of album. Why artists feel the need to put new songs on Best Of compilations is beyond me, but this one is no different - two new tracks so if you already have the entire Supergrass discography, you'll be picking this one up as well.

Donnie Darko director, Richard Kelley, making a "comedy-musical" called Southland Tales? The news is that Sean William Scott will star along with the likes of Jason Lee, Kevin Smith, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and a bunch of others.. but what the hell is that about? Not to judge it before it's even a full fledged idea, but that certainly doesn't sound like the kind of quality film I'd expect from the Donnie Darko creator. Weak.

Dreamhost is apparently back - hopefully for a good long while now. BUT just in case it continues to have problems, what hosting providers do you guys use? I've looked at PHP Webhosting and while it has a great price for a great deal, their Control Panel kinda blows. MT is a big name, but they don't give the same great deal that Dreamhost does.. so, anyone? Suggestions?

flight404 - v7

posted March 26, 2004 #

Okay.. the new Flight 404 is ridiculous. I'm not sure if the experiments were actually performed with mathematical equations integrated with webcam video / audio, etc because it's all phrased in such a way that I have no point of reference for validity. Regardless, the outcome is engaging and worth viewing.

Daniel Box Poll #2

posted March 26, 2004 #

Not exactly weekly, but here's the latest Daniel Box poll: What brands are you loyal to?

His examples go like this: Shoes - not brand loyal, Deodorant - brand loyal. For me; Clothes - not brand loyal, smokes - brand loyal. This isn't a "I prefer to get X" kind of situation.. the poll is looking examples of "I will only get this." Let's hear it.

Future Perfect

posted March 26, 2004 #

Apparently Steve from the Autolux board has a copy of the new album.. not a ton of tracks that haven't been heard on the demo (the first or second one), or from random bootlegs.. but I'm interested to hear the studio versions. Fortunately this means that the album may actually come out soon and for some reason that is exciting.
