Hrm.. not sure what I think about Nader running for President. On the one hand, I don't think John Kerry has the strongest chance of beating Bush but it lessens his chances with another candidate. On the other hand, I think our country desperately needs more than just two voices to represent the entire gambit of idea's out there so it would be nice for him to get some recognition (even if he doesn't win he can qualify for some sort of federal money, right?). My brother points out that even if Bush wins, if the Legislature is powered by Democrats he won't be able to be quite as destructive... I hope he's right.

hale obsession

If you haven't been reading Skylab, you're missing out on some great links (and some overly obsessive chatter about Beards). Fortunately, Ryan still emails me some goods that don't make it to Skylab log. Here's a sampling of goods. Destroy Evil is one of those utterly insane sites that could literally occupy you for days trying to browse it all - and make you wonder who the hell has time to make a site so in-depth? Arrgh is a nice graffiti / stencil / sticker / art-y place to browse. I rather enjoy that they have kits you can order to spread the word. And finally, Came Crashing is a screen printing / design portfolio that is worthy of some time. The first few portraits in the Illustrations section are quite nice (you gotta love #3).

weekend

posted February 23, 2004 #

Predicted weekend activities were pretty dead on - more Aireline EP Construction (via Skyamore), some kitchen painting, and random house work. What was not planned was the slight pruning of the CD collection and the additions of 3 new discs. The Ryan Hale mix CD was a welcome addition, and I look forward to having time to give it a good honest listen.

The new Walkmen's disc Bows and Arrows hasn't done a damn thing for me yet except "The Rat" - which is fantastic. The disc actually begs two questions - 1) Why not write more songs like "The Rat"? They obviously know it's the best track on the disc as they have made it impossible purchase via iTunes without getting the entire album. They know noone will get the rest of the disc if they can just get "The Rat." Doesn't this tell them something? and 2) Who the hell designed their CD artwork? The booklet and such isn't really that bad but the CD itself looks horrible. Just like no thought was put into it at all. So terrible.

The Wrens disc is growing more and more on me (as a certain Rocco promised it would). I don't know why I dragged my feet on this one for so long. Kind of like that Goldcard disc, I figured it wouldn't be as good as the tracks I'd (legally) downloaded.

Not to much browsing time today.. sorry bout that folks. Looking forward to a weekend of painting, making more Aireline EP's (you picked one up yet?), and general taskery. Hope you have a good one.

The I Make Things site is not only intriguing because of it's portfolio but because of the hand-drawn type treatments. Does that typeface look familiar? Link via Chad.

It appears that Ryan Hale has a few new tricks up his sleeve. He's been posting at Skylab and now he's planted the seeds for his own site. Kind of excited to see a portfolio emerge there...

Sweet, The Unicorns are playing Nashville (The End - 3/12).. and that's right after they play Murfreesboro at The Red Rose. So, if someone felt so inclined, they could see them twice.

Spent some time with Stickee exploring all the levels, opening secret doors, and balancing burger ingredients. Strangely I didn't really bother to check out any portfolio items, but the site had my attention.

download day

posted February 18, 2004 #

Trying to get alot done today.. not a ton of time to browse, so I'll just try and drop some places to get your download on.

Index of /eeyem/drop/2003 Ben Gibbard on KEXP - Interview and acoustic performances of some classic DCFC songs / Dntel / whatever.

Bodysong stream - for the Radiohead fans.. Johnny Greenwood's solo work. Both the previous links were stolen shamelessly from Coolfer.

Calexico - cover of "Alone Again, Or" - which you might remember from a little film called Bottlerocket.

The Grey Album - cause you're never gonna see this one in stores.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

Lots of random drawings and such over at Gamebombing. Mostly I just enjoy the front page and its ridiculously large setup of wires.

The Burton Analog site is pretty cool but after browsing through each section I still have no idea what's really being promoted. Some sort of snowboarding gear I'm sure but specifically I haven't a clue. I guess that's one way to create demand.

iPeek an iTune

For those of you who are Pepsi drinkers, and iTunes downloaders, the current Apple promotion is a pretty good deal. Especially if you consider the fact that if you take 10 seconds and peek under the cap before you buy the bottle you can tell if you won or not. Why Pepsi isn't doing this for their whole product line is beyond me but I suppose a million bottles of Diet Pepsi is going to sell alot slower than a million bottles of Mountain Dew (and possibly reach the intended audience?).

new music

posted February 17, 2004 #

One of the pitfalls of this current layout is that I can't really expound upon new music that I've purchased. I give it two lines worth of review and that's all that fits.. so to know if something is good or bad is sometimes difficult. So if I may expound on this a little bit...

Apollo Up - These guys are signed to Theory 8 (along with Forget Cassettes) and put out a surprisingly great record. The guitar sound is very reminscent of Faraquet, No Knife, and I'm told Rocket From The Crypt. Their live show is an intense onslaught of these songs but without that as a listening reference point you won't be disappointed.

Broadcast - From the EP and the stuff I downloaded I expected alot crazier sounds, beats, and just random noise. However, HaHa Sound is very withdrawn. Fortunately I purchased the Special Edition packaging version of this disc, so no matter what I think about the music the artwork has my full attention.

Clearlake - This is a classic case of "Hey, isn't our single great? go buy our CD and be disappointed." Cedars is chalk full of morose, brooding, and sometimes overly dramatic songs ("The Mind is Evil"). I suppose it's not a bad disc if you knew what you were getting into, but if you hear "Almost The Same" and expect the rest of the disc to be anywhere near the same vein.. brace yourself, it's not.

Man In Grey - I actually think my two line description of this does it justice.. rock, pop, noise. Takes a little digesting but if you're into some Sonic Youth you will likely appreciate this.. as the influence is there.
