WASTE

posted May 28, 2003 #

Even though they are owned by AOL, Nullsoft still brings the goods. Everyone loves Winamp, and they have a new chat program called WASTE. You can read about it here. Kind of works like Gnutella in that it has no centralized servers. All your messages are encrypted and they've got some kooky bandwidth saturation going on so noone can spy on data being transferred (is this honestly a problem?). While not something I personally am looking to use, I think it's cool that the software is being developed. Link via Chad.

Font nerds rejoice. Check out Dalton Maag Ltd for a pleathora of custom fonts and logo treatments. For the non-font nerds, check out some stuff like: logos - 1, 2, 3; fonts - 1, 2, 3. Link via Holland via Shane.

Lots of cool shirts and such at Commonwealth Stacks, as you probably already know. I, however, have not seen a shirt like this by any of the online t-shirt places... embroidered hyena logo. Nice.

beard contest

posted May 27, 2003 #

I'm not sure if Arlo was serious or not - but starting in August.. I'm making the call-out for a nationwide Beard Contest. While not actually competitive in any way, I'd enjoy it if everyone grew their best beard until... umm.. December.

awful truth

posted May 27, 2003 #

Umm, this boxset is great and all - but what if you already have Season 1 on DVD and would rather just buy Season 2 by itself? Oh wait, nevermind.. here it is.. just wasn't listed in the Amazon search results. Silly me.

welcome to the US

I think that this is just ridiculous. A drivers license doubles as a photo ID - id being a quick little way to say "identification." That's not gonna happen with a full covered face/head shot. This is not a question of religion, this is just practicality.

Saturday Morning CD

Okay, I need someone who lives near an independent record store in this list to go pick me up the Eels bonus disc for Shootenanny! on June 3rd. Grant? Chris? Oh yea, watch the new Eels video too - E making pancakes, driving with truckers, and rocking with zombies (Windows Media / Real Video).

Cool interview with Lance Bangs - the guy working on the David Cross documentary Let America Laugh. Aside from information about that particular DVD, he says he is working on some stuff for Spike Jones, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry - all Bjork directors. Strange. Oh, and there is another interview about the DVD with David Cross if you're interested in that.

big thanks to frankie

Woo, Daniels film from the 48-hour film festival is online now. Everyone did a great job on it - funny script, great shots, great editing, and it's even good after you watch it a bunch. And I'm sure a big thanks is in order to Frankie who is hosting it.

back home

posted May 26, 2003 #

Alright, I'm back home - but tired from driving 13 hours straight.. so not much in terms of posting for the time being. I was going to upload a bunch of pics from my last San Francisco trip, but the majority of pics that came back were of Nashville and jacked up. Either my Lomo is on it's way out, or I had a light leak that's hopefully been plugged (we'll find out on the next roll). But in the meantime, you can enjoy the shots to tide you over... Will post more about Austin later...

I'm off to Austin, TX for a few days. So expect no updates in that time. Wireless networks will be sparse and Powerbook time will be even less. So, enjoy the rest of the Internet.

supergroups

I was telling Bryan about The Ben's (Ben Kweller, Ben Lee, and Ben Folds) and so he in turn informs me about The Thorns (Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins, and Pete Droge). I'd go with The Ben's being the more interesting to my ears but it does bring up an interesting topic - what combined artists would make a great supergroup? Even if it's just for one album (a la The Replicants).

don't mess with the nuns

Note to the US government: Don't mess with nuns. I think that's some pretty commendable action.. I'd love to see the case turned around where the military is somehow found guilty of harboring weapons of mass destruction in a fury of NBC late-night drama.

E interview

posted May 21, 2003 #

I'm interview E today from the Eels. So if there are any pressing questions you've always wanted to ask him (beyond beard grooming techniques), hit me up and if time permits I'll see if I can work them in. The interview is for Silent Uproar, obviously.
