San Dimas Today: Diane Franklin

posted November 28, 2018 #

One day I'll stop posting about the continuous stream of new We Own This Town content but probably not anytime soon. The latest treat offered to the world comes in the form of this San Dimas Today episode (the Bill & Ted podcast). The hosts sit down for a lengthy interview with actress Diane Franklin to chat about her career (she was in Better Off Dead after all), her involvement with Excellent Adventure and how a skipped college exam led to an era of actresses with curly hair.
Not all podcasts are for all audiences so I understand if you've steered clear of a show about a cult classic movie but this is a good one for all audiences. Diane Franklin is unbelievably pleasant.

Killers in the Closet (Live)

posted November 28, 2018 #

As you may have noted over on my Twitter, a new video from Patrick Damphier debuted yesterday over on The Nashville Cream. The video is especially noteworthy for a couple of reasons:
  • First, it's a live rendition of the song. This is not what you'll hear on the album (Say I'm Pretty) but an actual live recording. It's impressive that they got this whole rig setup in a day and it sounds that good.
  • Secondly, there's an all-star cast of performers in the video. Most notably is Jessie Baylin in the second half of the song but every single performer is in another band or performs in their own right in an impressive way. Visit the article to get the low down on each. Fun fact: two of them are involved with other yk Records projects.
  • Lastly, it's just an impressive video. Period. If it were just a straightforward video performance it would look great but the fact that it pans over during the bridge to reveal a second band is just.... awesome. It's pulled off extremely well and honestly unlike any video I've seen.
TLDR: great new video, go watch it.

Shipp Studio: 2018

posted November 27, 2018 #

Back in 2017, I mentioned The Shipp Studio Archive, an online repository of images from 1948 to 1978 emerging from Centerville, TN.

The Bitter Southerner recently did some further research on the subject with their "A Little Family Photo Studio" piece. The basic history of the archive is covered but they also speak with photography and history experts on the diversity and quality of the archive. It's not uncommon to find an enormous archive of photos from that period of time but it is quite rare to find a body of work that is from the South and captures all races and all income levels; particularly in a tasteful way.

The photos have been turned into a book entitled A Community in Black & White and it contains 16,000 images from the collection. Impressive all around, to say the very least.

fan/fiction w/ Veronica Kavass

posted November 27, 2018 #

Great new episode of fan/fiction went up today featuring an interview with writer and educator Veronica Kavass. The hosts discuss the trials and tribulations of teaching creative writing to a generation that's been raised on fanfic. If "genius steals, talent borrows" then why is writing fanfic frowned upon in an educational environment?
More importantly, Veronica shares the tale of a relative that wrote pre-Internet Don Quixote fiction entitled The Chapters Cervantes Forgot. You'd think in a world where publications can't travel quite as fast as they do now, such a thing would fly under the radar but that was not the case.
