ISH: Billy Bob Brockali

posted November 15, 2018 #

Justin Ishmael, aka ISH, has released a number of unique products - largely culled from various horror movies or original characters. But he recently announced an 11" Billy Bob Brockali vinyl figure, whom you likely remember from The Rock-afire Explosion, the Showbiz Pizza band. If you don't remember that whole weird animatronic gang, watch this documentary. There is a particularly horrific feeling that comes from watching the band but it's nice to see ISH stepping outside of its standard genre.

All and all, I understand not everyone wants a gigantic banjo playing bear with removable face on their desk but, you gotta admit it looks pretty phenomenal and there's lots of additional goods likes shirts, pins and pint glasses if you're looking for a smaller investment.

@dpatrickrodgers Rainbow Kitten Surprise. I’m sure they’re fine, but we already have one String Cheese Incident—we don’t need another.

San Dimas Today: Those Who Can Shred

posted November 14, 2018 #

The hosts over at San Dimas Today - the Bill & Ted podcast I help produce - sat down with composer David Newman to discuss his history, his involvement with both Bill & Ted movies and how he juggles such a massive workload, even today.
If you aren't aware, David Newman is the son of Alfred Newman - the guy who composed the "fanfare" at the top of the 20th Century-Fox Studios logo, you know this thing - and cousin to Randy Newman, the guy who made this thing. It's a great interview and insightful on a number of levels. Do give it a listen, it's streaming all the places - even Spotify.

Blek Le Rat

posted November 13, 2018 #

Blek Le Rat, aka Xavier Prou, is a French graffiti artist that has been stenciling various parts of the world for four decades. His signature piece is a small rat, inconspicuous but impactful, but he's done many larger scale pieces, often lifesize . There's tons of info and history on him over on the official site, along with four decades of work cataloged from the 1980's through the 2010's.

It's very much akin to the work of Banksy, though rarely paired with the direct messages that Banksy includes. If you're into graffiti history and stencil work, this is a gold mine.

The Graphic Art Of Incredibles 2

posted November 13, 2018 #

This Josh Holtsclaw rundown on The Graphic Art of The Incredibles 2 is a fascinating study in applied research. You often read graphic design case studies where the inspiration is cited but it's really remarkable to see it applied for such a big budget movie, particularly an animated film where every single scene on screen is created. The movie itself is a fun romp revisiting the superhero family introduced in 2004 but this time it feels like we get to see so much more of the world they inhabit. From the cityscapes to the home design to the dials on the walls, everything seems to be culled from various modern homes, designers of the era (i.e. The World's Fair) and discrete ephemera of the 50's era.

Words won't do it justice, just go have a look and marvel at the work they've done.

Friday Videos - Nov 9th, 2018

posted November 9, 2018 #

I skipped Friday Videos last week because I'd already posted two rounds of Halloween goods, what more did you need!? Our appetite for More Internet is insatiable. I feel it myself.

Please take some time this weekend to read this Rolling Stone article on How Garth Brooks Predicted 'A Star Is Born' mania - basically citing that his stunt with Chris Gaines some 20-years ago laid some groundwork for the breakout movie. This is all great fodder for the Garth Brooks Chris Gaines Countdown to November 2019. Gotta get ole Gaines back in the cultural zeitgeist!

I digress. Here's some videos.
  • Porch Hands - a horror movie trope turned adorable.
  • Harriet the Singing Donkey - there's a LOT of buildup but it pays off.
  • Vista Otters - more surprisingly and beautiful sounds from unexpected creatures.
  • The End: In Praise of End Credits - this is deserving of its own post but take some time to watch this Kirby Ferguson piece on the meditative benefit of movie credits.
  • CHAI "Neo" - I can not recall how I ran across this but CHAI is a group embracing the "cute" movement but going full-on weird with it. I love this song and video.
  • Taking a Year Off - I don't know John from vlogbrothers but I like this take on how difficult it is turn off the attention the Internet requests of you. It's possible to tune out but I understand it's not always easy, he articulates that well.
  • Orbit - A Journey Around the Earth in Real Time - "Orbit is a real time reconstruction of time lapse photography taken on board the International Space Station by NASA's Earth Science & Remote Sensing Unit." It's 93 minutes so I don't imagine you'll watch it at your desk but it's nice to have around.

Jan Hakon Erichsen

posted November 8, 2018 #

When you describe yourself as a "visual artist and balloon destroyer" you've got a lot to live up to. Fortunately, Jan Hakon Erichsen delivers on that promise of balloon destruction in spades. His Instagram is filled with absurd devices and garb that enable him to... destroy balloons. Bonus, he also destroys dry pasta.

Oddly, every single entry is refreshingly amusing.
