It's Time To Break Up Facebook

posted September 6, 2018 #

The Verge has multiple pieces running at the moment around the idea that certain tech companies - Facebook, Apple, Google, Uber - may be facing antitrust regulation. Or, at the very least, maybe we should consider it. The more compelling of the pieces for me is this Nilay Patel piece on It's Time to Break Up Facebook, which covers much of the same ground conceptually but draws from conversations with Tim Wu.

Wu is the author of a book called The Master Switch (and coined the term "Net Neutrality"), all about "The Rise and Fall of Information Empires." I've talked about it many years ago but the book really stuck with me. It is, by and large, a testament to the fact that media companies continuously cycle through a routine of innovation, massive growth, stifling themselves for fear of competition and then being broken up. AT&T is the most obvious example that comes to mind but there's been others.

His argument in the article - and accompanying podcast - is that if Facebook were broken up, the competition that would emerge would actually stoke the flames of innovation.

I'm not sure where I fall in this argument but it's an article well worth reading and giving plenty of consideration to. So, do that.

San Dimas Today: Episode 1, Take 2

posted September 5, 2018 #

Today's the day, the debut of San Dimas Today, the podcast exploring all things Bill & Ted, is now live for your enjoyment. The first episode does a bit of introductory work for the hosts - Jason T. Meares, Esq and Kelly Hoyle Bolick - and then dives into some thoughtful musings on the movie itself. The real kicker is when they get to the soundtrack exploration later in the piece, so stick around for that.
The duo has already recorded several future episodes and they continue to get better and better with each undertaking. I'm confident that if you're a Bill & Ted fan, the third episode is going to knock your socks off.

So, dive into episode 1, go follow them on their various socials and enjoy!

Been seeing the work of Matt Christy pop up in my feeds lately and I'm intrigued to see new work from him. There's a myriad of implementations and styles from what I can glean off his Instagram feed - collage, paintings, animation, etc. I just wanna see more of it!

#DragonCon

As mentioned, I went down to Atlanta last weekend for DragonCon. For those unfamiliar, DragonCon is a convention that celebrates all things geek culture. While Comic-Con certainly started with similar goals, it morphed into a giant movie industry event that acts as premieres for big tentpole films. I'm sure it's also a complete blast as an attendee but from the outside, it looks a little more corporate.

DragonCon has been running since the late 80's and hasn't seemed to ever make that switch. It consumes downtown Atlanta with thousands of people filling the streets and every hotel in the area with cosplay costumes and general, polite, enthusiasm for all the things. I may harp on getting stuck in a nostalgic mindset but there's a fevered creativity at work here that goes beyond "hey, remember this thing from your past?" Attendees merge characters (like Ghostbuster Admiral Ackbar), gender bend, race bend, celebrate all body types and even have their own in-jokes (like these two, paying homage to a carpet pattern).

All and all, it's an exercise in positivity. Even if you don't feel any affinity to the characters being portrayed (trust me, I empathize with Star Wars / Comic book exhaustion), it's hard not to appreciate the work and dedication involved. So, with that in mind, please give yourself a deep dive into the #DragonCon2018 and #DragonCon hashtags on Instagram to get an idea of the goodness happening down there every year.

Quick heads up! If you're into the podcasts we're offering over at We Own This Town, now you can also get them over on YouTube. I converted each episode from the archive into a still frame video for archival purposes but I'm planning on doing more with them as time progresses.

TDLR: WOTT is on YouTube. Go Subscribe if that's where you like your media streams.

Archive 81

posted September 4, 2018 #

Still getting my feet wet with the full offering but, so far, the "found footage horror podcast" Archive 81 is pretty entertaining. Much like The Black Tapes, it's a scripted show that starts with a small scope but could go any number of directions, given whatever events unfold throughout the duration. The effects of the found tapes degredation and ambiguity of just exactly what is happening is compelling to say the least.

Also like The Black Tapes, sometimes the acting can be a bit... offputting. As in, it's not always stellar. However, just dive into an episode and know that you're listening to a story, not a journalistic endeavor and your expectations will be perfectly set.
