Robbs

I'm an unabashed fan of Aaron Robbs. So, when I saw the news that he was departing from Dropbox to focus on his creative studio that he established with his wife - Robbs - I was excited at the news. There's not much to see yet but check out his portfolio for a taste of work that Robbs previously produced and keep an eye on the feeds for more developments.

What Is A Southern Writer, Anyway?

posted July 11, 2018 #

This NY Times Opinion piece from Margaret Renkl, What Is a Southern Writer, Anyway?, is mostly a tribute piece to the late Jim Ridley; a writer from the Nashville area that grew to become Editor of the local alt-weekly, The Nashville Scene. She talks about Ridley's accomplishments and questions the ideas around being a "Southern Writer" - i.e. Faulkner, Welty, O'Connor.

While the piece is about writers it can really be applied to a larger scope of people. What is it about Southerners and their loyalty to the South - even when it seems at odds with their being? Ridley could have easily left town and become an established writer for any number of publications, the Times included, but chose to stay in Nashville. The final paragraph hits home in a heavy way, particularly as someone that moved back to The South and struggles with its massively conservative values.
Maybe being a Southern writer has always been more than stereotypes of ceiling fans and panting dogs in dirt yards. Maybe being a Southern writer is only a matter of loving a damaged and damaging place, of loving its flawed and beautiful people, so much that you have to stay there, observing and recording and believing, against all odds, that one day it will finally live up to the promise of its own good heart.
There's a lot to digest there (for me). Are Southerners guilted into staying to fight the good fight? Is it an altruistic endeavor? Does The South even have the good heart that we assume it does.

Living in a state that is always Red and runs rampant with racism, homophobia and general isolationism is not exclusive to The South but it's certainly what it is known for. I don't know why I stay but I do think we're better than that and there's plenty of us that feel otherwise. I can only hope that my little pieces of contribution can help yield a different thinking about those of us below the Mason-Dixon.

Itty Bitty Sites

posted July 9, 2018 #

Nicolas Jitkoff, VP of Design at Dropbox and ex-Material at Google, created Itty Bitty Site - an experimental website undertaking that encodes the entire source for a given page directly into the address. This results in a rather long URL but it's all there, no server needed. This Verge article summarizes it nicely but the real bread-and-butter of it all is the creative ways people are using it. Here are some examples directly from Jitkoff himself.

CMJ New Music Monthly

I allowed myself a little bit of nostaliga indulgence this weekend and took a deep dive through the CMJ New Music Monthly discography. If you aren't encroaching on 40-years of age then you may not remember a time in the late 90's when CMJ published a monthly consumer magazine that was bundled with a compilation CD of new music. Each disc spanned the gamut of genres and label sizes - both big majors and small indies contributed to each collection (though, admittedly, more on the larger label side that could afford the placement).

I discovered a ton of music this way and enjoyed remembering hearing Pulp, Guster and Buckethead or Jonathan Fire Eater, Bran Van 3000 and Wheat or Creeper Lagoon, Tricky and Komeda all at once.
There are Spotify playlists containing a lot of this music. It's convenient to be able to re-hear some of these tracks but it was the limitation of the CD running time that really made it something consumable. A playlist of 21 hours of music is nice but more than a bit overwhelming.

If anyone runs into a treasure trove of these playlists akin to the 120 Minutes archive, let me know so I can properly indulge next time I'm feeling nostalgic.
