Excel Unusual

posted July 3, 2018 #

"Welcome to Excel Unusual, the home of the most unique Microsoft Excel animated spreadsheets."
If that description alone isn't enough to get you to take a deep dive into this site, you are lost. These spreadsheets aren't just animations of rollercoasters, they are full-on games, tachometers, and a lot more. This is some of the best kind of Internet.

Thank you John Baldwin.

Between that milky girl getting pulled into the ocean by a shark and the civil war on Wednesday, I am so jazzed this summer.

We Own This Town: Volume 111

posted July 2, 2018 #

Aaaand I'm back with another episode of We Own This Town Music featuring a bunch of enjoyable new music from the Nashville area. The last episode was a deep dive interview with Beth Cameron that I really enjoyed but it's also nice to get back to basics. Just some music!
The first 10-15 seconds are pretty ridiculous. When you're alone in a studio and decide to try something entertaining, the results can be a mixed bag. Hopefully it nets out on the side of Stupidly Funny and not just Completely Stupid.

Friday Videos - June 29th, 2018

posted June 29, 2018 #

This past week I flew to New York for a one day meeting and then immediately flew back the next day. I stayed at the POD Hotel in Brooklyn and I gotta tell ya, it was great. Tiny tiny room, cheap rate and excellent location. I'm sure all of Williamsburg hates that it exists but I'm giving it my full endorsement.

I digress, here's some distractions to enjoy as we roll into a holiday week.
  • Don't Let It Get You Down Lyric Video - the Sandusky, Ohio hits keep rolling in. Enjoy this lyric video for one of my favorite tracks from the album.
  • Coupler - Invention I - the Coupler LP Gifts from the Ebb Tide came out last November. It consists of four tracks, the last of which being a lengthy 17 minutes. However, this track is a mere four minutes and the visuals to back it up are mystifying from start to finish.
  • Portugal the Man: Beavis and Butthead - somehow Portugal the Man convinced Mike Judge to bring these two idiots out of retirement for a short video to open their concerts. I'm sure it wasn't cheap but the results were worth it.
  • Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Frankly, I am entirely ambivalent to a new TMNT cartoon being released but the theme song (And score) is being done by Matt Mahaffey, one of my favorite artists, so I can't help but include the new show intro. It's bombastic to say the least.
  • How the Internet Works - for a proper chuckle.
  • Just the Cookie - love a good edit that turns into understandable nonsense.
  • Wednesday My Dudes - you know that feeling when you discover an entirely new Meme and it has a massive repository of insane videos to go along with it? Yea, this is that.
  • The Shining: Cut Take - the Internet is stupid and I love it.

Ballroom Culture

posted June 29, 2018 #

It seems that Ballroom Culture is having a bit of a Renaissance in the mainstream lately. If you're not familiar with "Ballroom", please take time to watch Paris is Burning to get a grasp on the confluence of dance, fashion and community that makes up the long running event. OR, maybe just watch one of these two new shows that focuses on the same thing but in a more modern way.
  • POSE - a scripted drama from Ryan Murphy that follows a new House being established and fighting their way to establishment and recognition. Definitely over the top sometimes but it looks great and, more importantly, shines a light on the difficulties that homosexual and transgender people experienced from outside communities and their own in terms of acceptance.
  • My House - a VICE documentary series on current day Ballroom culture in NYC that follows a number of competitors through their experiences. First episode is Free, so you've got no excuse.

@ItsDavePaulson made an amazing album based on the movie Tommy Boy, and blogs are quick to point out its "pretty good" when it's actually fuckin excellent. It's like early Weezer, Spoon and Brian Wilson conceived a sweet baby in a movie theater in 1995. https://t.co/Qd1qM435Ec

Proleter - Bubbles

posted June 28, 2018 #

I stumbled across Proleter some years ago with the song April Showers. It's a little bit hip-hop and a little bit 20's flapper combined together in a way that actually works. His latest release, Bubbles, continues that same blend and it's downright pleasant.
You probably want to start with "Lullaby" but I imagine you'll find some goodness throughout the EP.
