Me at 15: I'm a liberal!
Ppl at time: I used to be a liberal at your age. When you get older, you'll become more conservative!
*years later*
Me now: Hey, you're right, I grew out of my liberalism.
Those ppl: Great! That's--
Me: I'm a socialist now.
Those ppl: ...what the fuck

Following the tragedy in Parkland, FL (the
18th school shooting of 2018) the students quickly organized a peaceful protest called
March for Our Lives to raise awareness around gun control and to demand a change. They've got a
Go Fund Me that is doing incredibly well and an
Instagram documenting all of the support protests that will occur around the country on that day.
I do try to keep "political" postings few and far between here on the site but I'm clearly
very pro-gun control. The
facts are in, guns
and people kill people. It's a combo.
If you have not watched
Emma Gonzalez's speech, do it today. It's 11 minutes and it effectively captures the frustrations we all feel on this issue. I can only hope that these Parkland students are the catalyst for a larger conversation and, ideally, a movement that finally makes
some impact.

ME: Cool, cool. How long will it take for my twisted ankle to feel better?
HUMAN BODY: 7 years and it will never be the same.

I was recently shown this video of a
scantily clad Nosferatu vogueing in a thrift store and I proceeded to watch it 50 times. It's perfectly mesmerizing and macabre and absurd and hilarious all at once.
The vampire to thank for this creation is
Arran Shurvinton, a "lovable monster makr and creepy creature impersonator." His
Instagram and
YouTube are filled with examples of that moniker, largely leaning into the Nosferatu character. This
performance of "The Phone Call" is undeniably entertaining but I'm equally drawn to the
high fashion photos, as it's such a perfect contrast between beauty and "monster."
Treat yourself,
put this on repeat. Day made.

I've not watched much
Bojack Horseman but I do know that it's littered with Easter Eggs, particularly in terms of background characters and one-off jokes. It is also, apparently, filled with heavy nods to fine art. Daily Art Magazine has
compiled all those references in one spot. The references aren't exactly subtle - Warhols, Rothko's, Harings, etc etc - but it's still fun to see the real versions side-by-side with the slightly warped Bojack versions.

Pretty great read over at Vanity Fair on
How Twitter Lost the Internet War, basically cataloging the major stumbles the platform has had around Trust and Safety. There's an understandable amount of finger pointing but there's no single, clear, fault. As with many things, it's a pile-on of issues and fixes that just never seem to see the light of day. Hopefully that's not actually the fault of one or two people.
In other news, Twitter is
deprecating their desktop app because, why not?
There is a LOT of good on Twitter. I believe it can be a legitimately fun and positive resource for the Internet. I mean,
look at this thread.
That's what the Internet should be. Twitter should work to get towards more of that and we'll all be in good shape.

When now-host
Ryan Breegle approached me about releasing a podcast about Gore Vidal I was immediately intrigued, largely because I know next to nothing about him. I've heard his name for a solid twenty years but never took the time to
really learn about what his place in the zeitgeist really was. So, I'm really happy to have this opportunity for myself, and for everyone else, to take the deep dive and learn more.
The first episode,
Gore and the Gay Novel, is now streaming everywhere. The piece is only 14 minutes long but does a great job of looking at Vidal's complex, and somewhat contradictory, take on homosexuality. It's important to remember that Vidal's prominence took place from the 50's and beyond. Not exactly a "woke" time to be open about homosexuality, which makes it all the more interesting.
The
Vidalotry series will be limited to 10 episodes in total, each one examining a different aspect of Vidal's fascinating life.
...and, of course, you can
subscribe on iTunes,
Google Play,
Overcast, etc. etc. Please do. I think we'll all be enlightened for it.

Continuing along with
my promise to make President's Day just about stuff I'm involved in, here's a reminder that the latest episode of
Hott Minute is available - wherein Ashley and Jamie debate the question "Who is the hottest cartoon character?" They
took a poll and then responded to all the amazing responses.
Here again, I'll suggest you
subscribe on iTunes,
Google Play,
Overcast, etc etc. These two are
funny and it's great to hear them change up the format a little bit.

It's President's Day, so I'm going to eschew regular posts from around the Internet and just post a bunch of new releases from projects I've been involved in. First up, the
101st Episode of the
WOTT Music podcasts. It's 35 minutes of local Nashville area music combined with some insightful narration featuring yours truly. So, if you like a nerdy voice mixed with some surprisingly eclectic music, dig in.
I would ask that you also
subscribe on iTunes or
Overcast or wherever you like to hear your podcasts; as that helps me get some
metrics on how well I'm doing. Everyone loves a good metric!
