Environments

posted February 8, 2018 #

Whenever I go shopping for records I swing by the "Misc" section and inevitably find a slew of LP's from the Environments series. These 11 albums were recorded throughout the 70's by Irv Teibel as a means of capturing field recordings of different environments that would aid in meditation (a rainy forest, a calm seashore, an alpine blizzard). They are all over Youtube if you're interested and really do have something special about them - from the sounds they capture to the artwork.

All that being said, it was a pleasant surprise to see that Numero Group has partnered with Teibel's original label - Syntonic Research Inc. - to reissue these recordings as an app. You could stream them on Youtube but this gives you a chance to hear the best quality versions of the recordings and make playlists from them, should you want to couple your Forest sounds with your Ocean sounds.

That Quincy Jones Interview

posted February 8, 2018 #

If you have been living Internetless for the past few days you may have missed everyone talking about this Quincy Jones interview over on the Vulture. While it contains many gems about the state of the music industry and how paying attention to history is the best way to make music, everyone is mostly loving his shocking quotes about other musicians. Here's a choice one:
What were your first impressions of the Beatles?
That they were the worst musicians in the world. They were no-playing motherfuckers. Paul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Don't even talk about it. I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn't get it. We said, "Mate, why don't you get some lager and lime, some shepherd's pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit." So he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. Ronnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up. Ringo comes back and says, "George, can you play it back for me one more time?" So George did, and Ringo says, "That didn't sound so bad." And I said, "Yeah, motherfucker because it ain't you." Great guy, though.
Pretty scathing! But, more importantly, he knows who killed Kennedy and that's hands-down my favorite part of the interview.
What's something you wish you didn't know?
Who killed Kennedy.

Who did it?
[Chicago mobster Sam] Giancana. The connection was there between Sinatra and the Mafia and Kennedy. Joe Kennedy - he was a bad man - he came to Frank to have him talk to Giancana about getting votes.
That's really the tip of the iceberg. Jones doesn't shy away from any subject and it's a captivating read.

QUINCY: ...speaking of Neil Armstrong. Sure, we did cocaine on the moon. Thought that bitch was about to OD on me. I shouldn’t even be talking about this. What’s your birthstone? INTERVIEWER: Again, I just asked if you would like a glass of water before we begin?

Ferris Plock / Duncan Artworks

posted February 6, 2018 #

I am a dyed in the wool fan of Ferris Plock. From his fine art to his collab pieces to his Food Faces and beyond, I just love what he does.

So, it's no surprise that when I saw he had a new set of pins made in collaboration with Duncan Artworks, I jumped on it. I mean, Bat Shorts and Fat Wolvie are hard to resist.

If that doesn't do it for you, give the rest of Duncan Artworks a browse - you might find something absurdly amusing that's right up your alley.

Pico-8 Games

posted February 6, 2018 #

Back in 2016, I stumbled into Pico-8, the "fantasy console" for creating new 8-bit games with similar restrictions to games of my youth. I pondered "if the cartridge offerings are worthwhile" but I think the past two years have proven that mild doubt to be unfounded.

Take a look at the list of games on itch tagged with Pico-8 and marvel at the creations! Massive Zelda-esque dungeon explorations, tiny platformers and even Celeste Classic - everyone's favorite recent indie.

If you're looking for some distraction - long term or short term - this seems like a great place to start.

Episode 3: Pobody's Nerfect

With the release of the last episode of Hott Minute (the podcast I produce and distribute via We Own This Town), I mentioned that I wouldn't always mention when a new episode is available. That's true but not quite applicable yet. The third episode, Pobody's Nerfect, is now streaming everywhere and I figured this would be a good time to actually introduce the hosts.

  • Ashley Spurgeon - though likely best known for her Nashville recaps at the Nashville Scene, Ashley is consistently contributing to pop culture commentary on her Twitter feed and shows a startling knowledge of both Simpson trivia and all things Anglophile. She's often audacious but never without solid footing to back it up. She's always dabbled in various collaborative projects - like the exemplary Rock n Roll Trivia at Mercy Lounge - but managed to keep her distinct voice.
  • Jamie Bradley - a TX native that's embedded herself in all kinds of projects around Nashville during her tenure here. In Terminator: The Second, the Shakespearen / Terminator 2 stage play mashup, she played John Conner. She also played a major role in The Agents of Fortune, a three season series of spy-vs-spy absurdity, and shows up in this fantastic music video, to name but a few accolades. She has a razor sharp wit and shares similar Encyclopedic knowledge to all things pop culture - from Garry Shandling to every Kardashian, she manages to wrangle it all.
These two aren't largely well-known entities outside of Nashville but they are hilarious. It's hard to be objective about that but their comedic talents are the primary reason why I wanted to work with them to get Hott Minute out into the world.
Enjoy Episode 3 and do the whole Subscribe and Rate thing - it actually does help.

GBoard

posted February 5, 2018 #

After reading through this WIRED piece that praised the perfection of Google's GBoard - a keyboard replacement for Android and iOS - I had to give it a spin.

I've tried many other keyboard replacements on my iPhone but it requires such a dedication to attune yourself to whatever new tricks and features are available, they rarely stick. So far, GBoard has been the exception to the rule. Swipe Typing has been around for awhile but it wasn't until this particular attempt that it actually worked for me. The assumptions made by the software on what I'm trying to type are actually pretty damn accurate. Add to that the built in Google, Youtube and GIF search, and it's hard to deny this is incredibly useful.

Downsides? I don't love the Emoji setup and I will always defer to my Giphy Keyboard to have the best results for reaction images but those are small quibbles. If you haven't used it yet, give it a whirl.

Callumart

Callum Donovan-Grujicich is a Canadian artist specializing in folk-art steeped creations depicting fantastical characters, like the above moon men. His portfolio and Instagram are a long stream of distorted faces and steampunk like fusions. The clincher? He's twelve. As in, not even a teenager yet.

So what you will about Children's Art, this is some extremely well executed work. If this was on display at a gallery, presented as the work of a new folk artist, no one would bat an eye. I find it a bit unsettling sometimes, which I think makes it even more effective.
