Dre Mcleod

Maybe this exposes a bit about me but I'm a huge fan of giant back patches on jean jackets. I don't care how it's perceived by others - too hipster, super lame, etc - I think it's a great look. Too Legit to Quilt, aka Dre McLeod, has an impressively large collection of offerings to adorn a jacket. There are mix and match, insanely huge or appropriately large pieces to choose from. There's a heavy vibe leaning into Egyptian symbols, underground cults and mysterious icons; all of which are exactly up my alley.

Jonathon Armstrong

Highly recommending the feed of artist Jonathon Armstrong. Not only does he document some of his favorite pieces that he encounters but he shares many of his own creations as well.

Interestingly, his medium is largely based in quilting techniques; blending together fabrics, book cloth, found paper and thread into mesmerizing patterns. He's also got a sweet jacket.

Misha Mishajashvili

I recently became aware of the works of Misha Mishajashvili, an artist from Estonia that has a particularly fascinating discography of works. The latest album, simply titled 2018, is a mixture of choir and orchestral samples, big programmed drums and plenty of distortion. It's honestly like finding a mixtape from another planet. Misha was kind enough to describe some of the recording process.
I record all of the music - bass, drum, percussion - at home with the help of a tape machine - most of time I cut tape by hand to make sound fit to song. It is long process but often works! The orchestra and choir samples I record from church or pull from a tape I inherited from my father and mother. Then i mold all together with help of a tape machine (and sometimes the computer) for best sound.
It's a compelling combination of tape loop beats, 50's dancehall horns, orchestration and plenty of disintegration and decay,

IMHO dollar signs should go after numbers. 4¢ = four cents 4% = four per cent #4 = number four $4 = dollar four 4$ = four dollars

It's true — I'm back at Kickstarter for a spell, mostly helping out on @drip, which I'm excited about for a bunch of reasons I talk about here. https://t.co/cAZBu7bwZG

Closing Keynote: Paul Lamere

posted January 9, 2018 #

Go ahead and mark this 2016 RailsConf Keynote speech from Paul Lamere into your Watch Later queue. It's an hour long and you'll want to devote some time to actually watching and enjoying it. Lamere is funny and affable as he discusses the massive wealth of data Spotify has access to and what they're able to ascertain from that insight - i.e. where's the drop in a particular song or what's the most relooped portion? They're also able to do a great deal with the Spotify API and he shows that off through a series of experiments. Even if you're not a developer of any kind, it's an excellent watch.

HT Jesse J Anderson for that one.

Nirvana - IV

posted January 9, 2018 #

You know that thing where you watch one video on YouTube and then it suggests one million similar items, overflowing your homepage suggestions with one topic? Well, I recently dove into this suggested compilation for Nirvana's fourth album, a gathering of demo's, unreleased b-sides and Band Mockups for "what could have been" (aka, total speculation) and now all I see are Nirvana videos for days. Curious about Kurt's Montage of Heck reworked into a solo album? What about some supposed Nirvana demo tapes? What about a Japan only EP?

I'm very familiar with falling into a YouTube hole but I've never indulged much in revisiting anything Nirvana did or did not release.. the wealth of music there is just too immense. But I've opened Pandora's Box now and there's no undoing it.

The year is 2018. Fred Durst, the person responsible for Limp Bizkit's 1999 song Nookie, is trying to reason with the president of the United States. https://t.co/trVnDg5jej

Eager

posted January 8, 2018 #

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of checking out the latest exhibition at the Zeitgeist gallery here in Nashville. One of the collections being shown is States of Matter, a series of sculptures created by women. While the physical pieces were certainly interesting, it was hard to deny the large group of folks gathered around the screening of Allison Schulnik's animation Eager.

If you are not familiar with Schulnik's work, I suggest revisiting this Grizzly Bear video, watching this strange Hobo Clown and then diving into previously mentioned 2014 piece, Eager. Her style is in a class of its own and is something I never tire of.
