As I did last year, I'm going to run through a review of yk records releases from 2017.
Technically,
Seen Comin' From a Mighty Eye is the debut release from the James Wallace led project,
Skyway Man, but more accurately, it's the evolution of what he'd already been doing for years under the moniker
James Wallace and the Naked Light. The songs are about lost loves, extraterrestrials and navigating this planet. It's a surprisingly effective mixture of folk tales and spacey keyboards.
The album was
announced on Consequence of Sound with the lead single + video
debuting on Stereogum. Oh, and Light In The Attic records
distributes it. The majority of the year saw Skyway Man taking the show on the road on both coasts, they even recorded an
Audiotree Live session that you should absolutely watch.
For me, there's a quality to these songs that sounds melancholy, curious and hopeful all at once. It's not an easy feeling to put into words but it's easy to empathize with his tales as they traverse the complexities of the world. Aaand it gets real spacey sometimes, which is undeniably enjoyable.
Available on
double LP in marbled colors and
streaming everywhere.

As I did last year, I'm going to run through a review of yk records releases from 2017.
Little Bandit kicked off 2017 with the release of his full-length
Breakfast Alone, an album that harkens back to classic country styles like George Jones, Tammy Wynette or more contemporary acts like Sturgill Simpson. The album
debuted on Rolling Stone with the launch of the video for "
Bed of Bad Luck", a genre flopping depiction of a bar encounter perfect for a more inclusive world.
It's a heavy record that deals with a lot of heartache, relationships and self-abusive behavior. Fortunately, lead singer / songwriter Alex Caress manages to wrap that torment into some humorous turn of phrase and surprisingly uplifting moments.
The album has received a surprising amount of coverage from Rolling Stone, including the previously mentioned debut, the relaunch of "
Platform Shoes" video, including it in the
Top 40 Country Albums of 2017 and
announcing the Christmas Alone EP.
The Nashville Scene included it in the
Best Local Albums of 2017 and Margo Price tapped the band to join her on the road for a handful of dates in January 2018.
We pressed the record to
pink vinyl and, of course, it's
streaming everywhere.
The music industry is a tough place to make progress for a variety of reasons but even as we close in on the year anniversary of this record, I don't see it slowing down. I am extremely optimistic there's plenty more in store for
Breakfast Alone.

The drama lies not in the fact that the child sees her mother kissing Santa Claus, but in the choice that the mother now confronts: admitting either that Santa is a lie or that love is a lie.

When magazines (or people) make lists of the best songs of the 60s, they always leave out "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" by Darlene Love.
Christmas or no Christmas, that's one of the best singles of the decade and y'all slippin.
