The Most Dangerous Group In Nashville

posted September 1, 2016 #

I've read a whole lot on Birdcloud, their kind of comedy, their kind of satire and whether or not they're racist themselves or shining a light on racism. It's a discussion that requires a grasp of nuance and an understanding that there's not a definitive hard line on the final decision, there's plenty of grey. All that being said, this Houston Press article The Most Dangerous Group In Nashville is a great example of a writer that gets it. The approach Birdcloud has is sometimes offensive, sometimes crass and often shocking but it's also reflective of the culture they come from and almost always satirizing that world.

It's a great read and a discussion well worth having, no matter what side you fall on. It's not an easy conversation to have on the Internet but nothing ever is.

Flamingosis

posted September 1, 2016 #

I've been finding it difficult lately to wade through the massive onslaught of new, unheard music constantly available from all angles. There's so many options it's overwhelming. However, when I heard Bright Moments from Flamingosis, I was immediately struck.
It's hip-hop, it's tropical, it's sample laden with just the right amount of familiarity and it's damn good.

Ghostly Ferns Shop

posted August 31, 2016 #

Happy to see that my favorite freelance collective, Ghostly Ferns, has officially launched their own shop of goods. I'm already a proud owner of Flo, the boobie ghost, but there's still plenty of goods to be intrigued by. Namely, I'm curious to try their original card game, Oversharing. It looks silly, absurd and ridiculously fun.

Henn Kim

Really drawn to these black-and-white works from Henn Kim. There's a simplicity to them but not without their own oddness and storytelling. Small vignettes of stories told in a single frame. Plenty more on Instagram, of course.

The Night Of Title Sequence

posted August 31, 2016 #

Full disclosure, I've only seen two episodes of HBO's The Night Of at the time of this writing. So if everyone is bemoaning the finale that aired recently, I'm sorry. I'm completely ignorant to that. However, I can confidently say that no matter where the story goes, I'm loving the title sequence from Method Design NY. It's a dark, creeping, aesthetic that sets a great tone for the show.

I'd love to somehow draw a line of inspiration from The Night Of to True Detective since they're both HBO shows and they're both dealing with wrangling the truth but I think it's co-incidence. Or maybe True Detective set a tone to give studios more creative license over these sequences.. result in the beauties we've seen lately.

Cindy Sherman

posted August 30, 2016 #

I've been engrossed in the work of Cindy Sherman recently, a practicing artist and photographer for the past forty years that has built a career on masquerading as someone else, usually a character trope plucked from the popular zeitgeist. This MOMA exhibit will let you dive deep into her catalog of works.

The grouped work really shows her chameleon-like ability to lose herself in the character while conjure a familiar persona. Sometimes it gets weird, sometimes it gets NSFW and sometimes it's just perfect.

Endless Coffee

posted August 30, 2016 #

They did it. Those magnificent bastards did it! An app that gives you endless coffee. Drip, Espresso, Cortado, Caffe Macchiato, you name it... it's yours with the 12oz app.

At the heart of it, it's a subscription service that allows you to order whatever hot bean drink you'd like without much human interaction. A simple idea I think most of us can get behind. It's only available in the Nashville area for now but I am sure it will grow (and prices will lower, presumably).

Public, Private, Secret

The International Center of Photography has an exhibit going up from Arne Svenson that's a bit on the controversial side. The gallery of works features images of Svenson's neighbors, shot secretly with a telephoto lens. His claim is that this doesn't violate any privacy issues, despite their lack of participation agreement from inside their private homes, because the figures are kept vague, never a specific visage being shown. His claims were held up by the New York Appellate Division as works of art and, thus, not commercial works violating privacy. It's certainly a sticky subject that continue to undergo scrutiny.

Pat Shannahan, Sample Detective

posted August 29, 2016 #

Take a moment to read through this great interview with Pat Shannahan, also known as "The Detective." She is hired by various artists and independent labels to track down the original owners of various samples and convince them to be cleared for usage in a new original work. She's worked for plenty of notable artists but clearing all the samples for both Avalanches albums is probably her biggest claim to fame... rightfully so, as that is no small feat!

There's plenty of interesting anecdotes throughout the piece but the exchange between Shannahan and Johnny "Guitar" Watson is especially ridiculous.

Astoria Design Studio

posted August 29, 2016 #

Have you ever been to Astoria, OR? You may remember it from the likes of Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit or the background of The Goonies. It's a quaint, pretty, delightful small town.

The work of Astoria Sign Shop helps to augment that delightful feel by providing extremely well crafted, hand-painted storefront signage. It's only appropriate for a delightful small town. Primary creative force Anna Weber does an excellent job of harkening back to older type style configurations and implementations (see: gold-leaf on glass) while still feeling like it's a sign that was made recently.
