Two friends of mine got married over the weekend in the Salem, MA area and I had a pleasure revisiting the sleepy town with the shameful
past. I thought I'd share a few items of note if you ever find yourself in the area:
- The Record Exchange - if you're into giant used record stores, this is a mecca. It's a ton of stuff but it's actually extremely organized, even the un-priced overstock.
- HausWitch - there's so much "Witch" stuff in Salem but 95% of it is incredibly cheesy. HausWitch provides Wiccan starter kits and has responsible homewares and decore; an excellent counterpoint to the typical black t-shirt + funny saying offerings throughout the rest of the town.
- Ugly Mug Diner - the food is tasty, the coffee is good but the Tarot Card Bubblegum Dispenser Machine in the lobby is really the main attraction here for me. 25cents earns you a laminated card that may tell of your impending doom-and-gloom, perfect before a big meal.
- Ponychase - Parade of Youth - though it is not a place you can visit physically, Jordan Caress (one of the lovely brides) is one of the masterminds behind this melancholy pop and everyone should enjoy it.
Short list, you say? Well, sure, it's a Starter Kit! You should also do the
Witch Museum,
Sitckwork, House of Seven Gables, The Friendship Wharf, and walk the main town drag to see folks dressed in Steam Punk outfits (or Nosferatu) if you're there for the first time. It's a surprisingly worthwhile weekend excursion.

This week in the news was
rough to say the least. I don't have any inspiring words to share about the ongoing violence - both against minorities and police offices. I'm speechless at the state of things lately and I hope we can all figure out a way to come to terms with a way to fix it.
But in light of that, here's some distracting videos. Because there's no better way to solve a problem than to not think about it at all, right? When in times of trouble, fire up the
live BearCam for some serenity!
- Nivea: Care from the Air - did you see the sunscreen defecating seagull? You really should.
- Batman vs Riddler - I normally don't go much for the CollegeHumor skits but, for me, it's hard to deny the enjoyability of a very Dumb Batman.
- Deal With It Robot - Simone Giertz builds yet another useless robot. Don't care for it? Deal With It.
- Major World Espanol - this car lot in New Jersey has the most delightful owners. I can't understand a word of their banter but their energy levels are infectious. If you are, try out the extended infomercial version, it's a delightful trainwreck.
- Cat is Hungry - I could bother to look up the context of this but I enjoy it more in the realm of total absurdity.
- Dinosaur Jr, Tiny - loving this song and the video is pretty entertaining too.
I also recommend watching this bonkers short film,
The Was, featuring new music from The Avalanches and a absurdly huge mashup of films and TV seamlessly cut together. Ridiculous.
