I am sure this kind of thing catches a lot of flack but, honestly, the photos of the process are equally as interesting as the famos themselves

Cinimated

Big thanks to Tony Zhou for steering me towards Cinimated, a hobbyist illustration playground featuring animated works of particular scenes from film. It runs the gamut of styles and I, for one am in. Be sure to check these pieces for some particularly pleasant madness.

The Poster Boys

posted December 22, 2014 #

When I think of passionate film poster art fans I almost immediately think of Sam Smith - a talented designer in his own right (and soundtrack afficionado) and passionate fan of sorts of creations stemming from that world. So, when he announced that he had started a podcast, The Poster Boys, I knew I'd tune in. Sam Smith and co-host Brandon Schaefer dive into Saul Bass, Alfred Hitchcock, John Alvin and even some of their own work in the first episode. I look forward to many more.

yk review: Uncle Skeleton - VHF

posted December 22, 2014 #

Way back in late 2013, Uncle Skeleton released his latest full-length album, Too Young, Too Old - it's a phenomenal piece of work (as they all are, honestly). But as added promotion for the album we wanted to really highlight the first track - "VHF."

So, we put together a digital single that featured the track, three remixes and two b-sides. A healthy offering if ever there was one. Oh, and we joined forces with Jonathan Rogers to make this incredible video.

I can not stress enough how much you need to watch that video. It's spawned some of my alltime favorite gifs.

Despite 2015 being around the corner, I don't think we've heard the last from "VHF" - I have high hopes for it and plan to see that it has a lasting future.

It's almost Christmas and it's nice to have things winding down. Personally, I'm looking forward to a little R&R over the next few weeks to catch up on some personal projects and plan for 2015. While you frantically finish your Christmas shopping this weekend, enjoy these videos! Need more? Listen to this beautiful chorus of crickets or the yearly Sam Smith Cinema Sound compilation. There's no shortage of greatness out there - go and embrace it!

The VHX Library

posted December 19, 2014 #

Big news over at VHX this week. We've released our iOS app and a Personal Library - both functioning as destinations to see all of your purchases in one location. I was largely involved with the iOS design, UI and UX - with plenty of help from my fantastic co-workers - and feel quite pleased with how it turned out.

The interactions are simple but manage to showcase the video work itself moreso than the VHX brand and you can Sync you purchases for offline playback. If you're planning a trip (or find yourself on the subway), just sync the video you want for offline playback and you're good to go. We've also got Airplay built in, so shooting it over to a bigger screen is no problem.

If you find yourself without any VHX purchases, just head over to Star Wars Uncut and get both crowd-sourced feature films from there, for free. Then go get the app so you can watch them wherever.

This all sounds very pitchy but I am very proud of this creation and look forward to continuing to push it forward.

yk records: Jasmin Kaset 2014

posted December 19, 2014 #

Many of the records I've put out have come to me in surprising ways - music I never knew existed or bands that I never thought would want to work with me. Jasmin Kaset falls into both of those categories. I had no idea that Quiet Machine was a thing that existed and, based on the greatness of her prior record - Hell and Half of Jordan - I assumed she probably needn't be involved with me. All that being said, I was pleasantly shocked when the offer came my way to assist in its release.
On the whole, the record is personal, introspective and just the right balance of third / first person storytelling. It waivers between upbeat pop moments - "Porno Mtn", "The Salesman" - and more melancholy journeys - "Lionshare".

The artwork was a two parter - the main image coming from Jasmin's sister-in-law, Jacqui Stockdale, and the layout expertise stemming from Drew Binkley. The digital version doesn't quite do it justice as it really looks best quite large and with the proper glossy overprint but, either way, it's a nice jumping off point to the songs within, which are strange character studies themselves.

All and all, I think it is objectively a great record. It has inspired me to push the label further and do my best to get these songs to as wide of an audience as possible because it would be damn shame if they did not. Do yourself a real favor and go listen.

Loyalty Bundle

posted December 18, 2014 #

Kirby Fergusion just announced something pretty special - The Loyalty Bundle. At the core of it, it's 3 great films - Indie Game: The Movie, Rewind This! and This Is Not A Conspiracy Theory - bundled together at one low price.

The twist is that if you happen to own any three of those titles already, you get the others for free... hence the name, The Loyalty Bundle. You get instantly rewarded for being an established fan. I love all three of these movies and am kind of shocked this deal exists.

So, if you have any of those movies - steer over to The Loyalty Bundle and click the link at the bottom of the page. If not, just go buy the bundle because that's a helluva good deal for three fine films.

yk records: Codaphonic 2014

posted December 17, 2014 #

Continuing my year in review of YK Records, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the double EP release from Codaphonic, unleashed in January of 2014.
To provide some further insight on the whole record, I knew Cody Newman - primary songwriter and namesake to the project - had something intriguing on his hands when he told me that he had a release of two EP's consisting of different songwriting approaches my interest was piqued.

Mindwrecker and Oh Radio! definitely work together as a cohesive piece of "Codaphonic" work but their distinct approaches are the refreshing part. I will be entirely honest and admit that Oh Radio! is my personal preferred side - as it is most assuredly something new for the band. Instead of the glossy, clean pop sound they are exploring something with a bit more rough around the edges production and a vibe that's just more fun in general. Don't get me wrong, Mindwrecker is filled with great songs, but Oh Radio! grabs me in a special way.

The artwork was executed by two different artists - Elizabeth Williams for Oh Radio! and Rachel Briggs for Mindwrecker. Read more about those two creations here and here, respectively.

I'm not sure what's next for Codaphonic but if he continues down the road of new sounds and execution styles, I can't wait to hear it.
