Brent Jackson started a nice Dribble Shot challenging folks to rework their avatars into a more Halloween style flavor. The responses are great - particularly those from Andy Helms, Nick Slater, Kalin Wood and Stephen Meszaros (among others). It's a worthy challenge...

I've been curious about taking web development to the next level with some actual app development but, in all honesty, am not that interested in the hurdle that is Objectiv-C. So, I've been having a look at a few frameworks and wondering if what they're selling is too good to be true or actually compiles to a snappy, legit feeling app.

• PhoneGap - recently purchased by Adobe, this HTML5 platform supposedly "leverages web technologies developers already know best.. HTML and Javascript" but still compiles into native apps for iOS and Android.
• Touchy Boilerplate - not so much for native apps but potentially a more useful starting point for a site that feels like an app. I've not enjoyed what I've experienced from Sencha or jQuery Mobile.. maybe this is what I've been looking for.

It's been a little while since I put together a mix of music just comprised of what I've been enjoying lately. The Altered Voices mix was fun but not really reflective of current, regular, musical interests. In fact, it's been since May that I actually did one of these "Time Capsule" style mixes. Long story short, here's another mix for you to enjoy. Fear of Missing Out is a reference to the new Liam Finn album, FOMO and, apparently, a pretty common phrase in certain parts of the world.

The myriad of work from Rosanna Webster covers a good bit of ground - photography, graphic design, short film, fine art, experiements, etc - but I'm particularly smitten with her collage work. I wish I could see every panel of this large enough to make into proper desktops - it's great source material mixed with the perfect bit of layering.

Combining an iPhone, iTimeLapse, Tiny Planet and a little bit of editing was all Westhoff needed to create this fascinatingly busy little world. My only complaint? I'd love to see one longer than 20 seconds.

Cartoon Brew has a great interview with John Kricfalusi regarding his Simpsons Couch Gag Intro and the process involved with creating it. If you're not familiar, John Kricfalusi is the man responsible for Ren and Stimpy (among other things) and the style certainly shows. All and all, the actual bit is incredibly weird, somewhat offputting and `gross` in that way you can't really put your finger on. However, the process of creation is an interesting one so it's certainly a worthwhile read.

Take a few moments to enjoy this quick imaginary trip down memory lane of the past and the future of famous logos. The Apple evolution is pretty ridiculous but I'm not entirely thrown off by the IBM, Xerox or Microsoft versions. The GAP and Starbucks iterations are not to be missed - check it out.

Nando Costa is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the substantial pillars of the Internet when it comes to art creation. Ten+ years ago when the web was still finding its legs he was there, creating some wonderful things. Turns out, he's still creating and looking for a little help on a new project - The New America short film - a stop motion animation fueled by 8" x 4.5" maple panel boards (from Plywerk) engraved with original art by Costa. He's already damn close to his goal but the more contributions that are made, the longer the film will be. Consider your contribution a down payment on a piece of art that, later on, you'll see for a fleeting moment in what is sure to be an impressive piece of moving pictures.

I've been falling behind on my mixes lately - prepare to have that fully rectified this month. Part of that undertaking is my somewhat monthly compilation of Nashville artists packaged as podcast - We Own This Town. The 48th installment came together rather quickly because A) it's been awhile and B) there's a ton of great stuff coming out of Nashville lately.

I realize it's probably not all that enticing to listen to a Nashville podcast given whatever preconceived notions you may have about Nashville music but, believe me, this is far from anything country music.

Take a few minutes today to watch Stopover from LeMob (aka Neil Stubbings and Bart Wasem). The style and movement on the whole piece is great but, really, it's a cautionary tale about respecting property (not really but it's quite entertaining).

The work that comes out of Invisible Creature is always enjoyable - always - but it's nice to see them get involved with something like the Experience Music Project's Can't Look Away exhibit - 19 illustrations portraying horror characters and scenarios. It's impressive work and it's quite timely.

It's October, so Halloween is about to sneak up on you before you know it. To properly prepare yourself, your home and/or your working environment why not procure these Dia De Los Modernist prints? I'm partial to the Paul Rand and Le Corbusier variations because Skulls With Glasses always get me.

It was announced recently that Kevin Kline is confirmed to star in the next Charlie Kaufman film along with Jack Black, Steve Carell and Nicolas Cage. Having read a little of the plot synopsis felt like a spoiler and then I remember that it's a Kaufman film, so I should remember that there's no way to expect what will happen. Over the weekend the cast of Arrested Development was on a panel at the New Yorker festival and said a season of new episodes and a movie are going to happen. That being said, they have no studio, no financing and no actual business behind them - just some scripts and agreement by the cast that they'd do it. This carrot has been dangling since 2006; why say anything until it's actually a legitimate thing?

Just a quick note that Google Analytics went realtime last week - taking away yet another barrier for usefulness. Now that Reinvigorate has been acquired I fear for its future (or, rather, its affordability) and am happy to see that GA finally got their act together for real time stats.

• Whatchuwant?! - the absolute greatest 2 seconds of video online. You know what's coming and it's still phenomenal. There's also a YouTube hole of terrible acting you can explore if you feel so inclined.
• FOX Retro - one incredible bumper for FOX Italy. It's basically the perfect hybrid of classic TV and videogames you'll encounter. The faux 3D stuff is perfectly integrated.
• Guy On a Buffalo: Episode 2 - there's a first episode but it's not like you need to see it. Frankly, I can't even explain why I love this so much but I do. I'll probably be singing it all weekend.
• "Golden Tree" by Martin Brooks - A Professional Display of No Handed Bike Moves. As you'd expect, it starts simple and gets more and more absurd. via ABar.
• Rick Perry: Bad Lip Reading - "Ice Cream, That Is Cheap. Fact." Stupid and perfectly executed.
• Andy Rooney: Out of Context - I can't say I've ever understood the allure of Andy Rooney but seeing these clips compiled makes his years of service almost worth it. Almost.
• Little Richard on Jimi Hendrix - this may seem like a crazy ranting (it is) but keep aware of the quote index going on. Almost everything that comes out of Little Richards mouth is total gold. "At times, he used to make my big toe shoot up into my boot!"
• Longest Argument Ever - ten minutes of Bridesmaids footage featuring Kristen Wiig and Mia Rose Frampton arguing; obviously in ad-lib fashion. It's good stuff.
• Aurora Seen from ISS Orbit - not crazy wacky, just mindblowingly impressive. The Auroras phenomena has always been a fascinating thing but to see it from a space station is just beyond words.

BONUS

• Slinky Drop - the slo-mo replay of the slinky dropping isn't entirely surprising but it's definitely very neat to see.
• Always Sunny Season 6 Outtakes - I love a good blooper reel.. this is no different.
• Copy Cat - sure, it's obviously setup (and possibly viral) but it's still pretty cute, especially at the end.

How am I just now hearing about Kottke's Stellar project? An aggregate for favorited items on Twitter, Flickr, Vimeo and YouTube from loads of people I know and admire? Uh, yes please. I realize that Tumblr has some similar functionality to importing these kinds of feed but Stellar makes the barrier for entry 100x lower (no finding RSS feed links, etc) and immediately starts serving you quality content. If you're not curious enough to sign up yet, do yourself a favor and have a peek at the Interesting Feed; from that point on it's a no brainer. You want this as a daily bookmark.

Some time ago I made note that Viget Labs really enjoyed their Javascript animations.. judging by their latest undertaking over at Team Viget it's safe to say that hasn't changed. I love that parallaxing, subtle floating elements (UFO, mouse astronaut, etc) and the elements that you only see during page transitions - smart move. Whomever lands a job with them will likely be in for a good time. Looks like a rather progressive and entertaining place to work.

Take a quick spin around the Barcamp Omaha site. I love the smooth scrolling to each section but, mostly, I love the use of a diagonal rule to separate content. It's an incredibly simple decision that makes a legit impact.
