The AV Club has a great new interview up with Bob Odenkirk where he discusses his role on Breaking Bad as Saul Goodman, his work developing new shows like Tim And Eric as well as a bunch more for other networks, his own possible new show for FX and his take on being a director. It is, obviously, essential reading.

When my friend Ben sent me a link to the parody trailer Weird: The Al Yankovic Story I was fairly sure I was going to watch approximately 10 seconds and then browse along to something else. I was wrong. Once I saw Patton Oswalt as Dr. Dementor I knew I was in the right place. Great way to start your Tuesday and, maybe, Aaron Paul\'s finest role.

So, I\'m home from SXSW and trying my best to recover. Typically I get asked what was the \"best\" thing I saw while I was down there but SXSW has slowly become more and more about seeing my friends moreso than about being blown away by bands. Granted, I did see some incredible sets from Phantogram, Plants and Animals, White Denim, Tobacco, Shearwater, Admiral Radley and a smattering of sets between from a load of others. However, my time spent with all my pals that ended up down there - C Mikesell, Paige, Kevin, Jed, Jessica, all those Public School guys, RENAUD, some Cream writers, co-workers, ex-Nashville residents and various new blogger friends really makes the whole experience for me. Is it backwards to go to a music conference specifically to enjoy time with friends and not really to see a bunch of bands? Probably so but it works as a great excuse.. so I\'ll take the opportunity when I can get it.

• The Impaler for President 2012 - it\'s good to know that the Internet will always bring us total nutjobs running for public office and the platform for which they stand. I particularly love his little bit about being okay with SNL.
• Uhh Yeah Dude - an amusing podcast that has recently been brought to my attention. I\'ve not had a chance to dig into the archives yet but if Jed and Mikesell approve of it, I\'m willing to give it a go.
• The Onion: Some Bullsh*t Happening Somewhere - this is probably old news to most people but even if you\'ve seen it, it\'s worth revisiting.

My brother sent me a link to this quiz - How Millennial Are You? - which consists of just a handful of very generic questions to see where you may / may not land in the spectrum of the post Gen-X\'ers worldview. There\'s an explanation of the methodology behind the survey but, really, it\'s just like any online quiz - generic / broad questions that pigeon hole the upcoming generation of 18-29 year olds. Regardless, it\'s interesting to see where you fall in the spectrum.. so take the quiz and share where you end up.

Personally, I got an 88 - which means I\'m way more in the lifestyle of a Millennial than I am a Gen X\'er (sensible, given that I was born in 1979 and Gen X cuts off at `81).

Netflix Kills Friends, Literally
Apparently Netflix has decided the \"friends\" feature of their site is so underutilized that it\'s not worth developing anymore, so they are ditching it entirely:

Friends is a feature on the Netflix Web site that’s been used by less than two percent of all subscribers since we added the feature in 2004. As a comparison, roughly 50 percent of Netflix members are now instantly watching movies and TV episodes on computers and televisions via game consoles, Blu-ray disc players and other devices that have been on the market since 2008.

No company has unlimited resources and we decided to move engineering development time and resources from a little used feature to support and maintain the things that benefit all Netflix members as the service evolves – more devices for streaming and better encoding, for example.

While I certainly can\'t argue with their thinking regarding having limited resources I think there\'s is probably an elephant in the room that isn\'t being discussed; the Friends feature is under used because it\'s extremely difficult to use. Adding friends to your list has always been damn near impossible to find a link for and then it relies on sending an email invite to connect with them, which will inevitably end up in the spam folder. The UX sucks and I\'d be willing to bet that it doesn\'t get used because people don\'t even know it\'s an option.

But so it goes, Netflix is a great service and they\'re certainly on the forefront of making commercial video and the Internet one of the most pleasant experiences around; just don\'t look for your friends anymore.

Hoefler & Frere-Jones have posted up a nice little article about mixing fonts - a good read through for any designer when it comes to selecting typefaces. Not having a ton of schooling in terms of the actual process of design (my education was more about deployment / implementation of design, not the creation of) it is very intriguing to see words like \"mood\", \"cheeky\" or \"debonair\" used to describe typeface choices. Overall the four techniques all center around H&FJ\'s \"Highly Scientific First Principle of Combining Fonts: keep one thing consistent, and let one thing vary.\"

Good advice indeed.

The portfolio of David Desandro is impressive both in what it contains and how it presents it. I love the full browser experience, the custom quick scrollbar and the diversity of the works - not to mention how well designed it is. Actually, every single page of the site is great - even the About. Overall, it\'s an inspiring piece of work.. love it.

• Keyboat Cat Reinvigorated - the music doesn\'t have the same punch as the original but it\'s a helluva tribute. Enjoyed.
• Mmm... Cake - why are these LOST actors loving Cake so much? I have no idea why this exists but I choose not to question it.
• The Confused Lamb - yea that\'s right.. it\'s a cute lamb video. How could you not enjoy it?
• Quentin Tarantino\'s Camera Angel - clapboards, clapboard, clapboards.
• Handsome Men\'s Club - I rarely watch Jimmy Kimmel but with skits like this, I sort of have to question why. It\'s really quite amusing.
• Chat Roulette Funny Piano Improv - this is like \"video of the week\" - your parents will be aware of this video and it\'s probably going to be on the Today Show if it hasn\'t been already. Regardless, it IS funny.
• Andy Richter talks Tonight Show - since Conan isn\'t allowed on TV it\'s interesting to hear Andy speak on the situation. He\'s a little less political about the whole thing than I think Conan would be but it\'s rather interesting none the less.
• Rock n Roll Wolf - I couldn\'t make it through the full seven minutes but the first two blew my mind. Just the fact that something this nuts even exists, much less gets aired on TV, is a good feeling.

It\'s that time of year again - SXSW 2010. I\'ve been a few times and hope this year has about the same shenanigans as previous endeavors. It\'s probably not a great idea but this year I\'m going in with no wristband, little to no idea of a schedule and no overwhelming desire to be at any certain place at any certain time. Fortunately I\'m sure others I know will let me know what might be worth diving into.

So, expect few blog posts over the next few days. I\'ll do my best to bring in some Friday videos but I doubt I\'ll be doing much browsing between now and then to make such a thing happen. That is.. unless you leave me some recommendations. Yea, that sounds good - let me know of whatever hilarious videos I\'m missing and what shows I need to be sure not to miss.

The Onion AV Club has launched a new project called AV Undercover where they ask 25 artists to come play in their studio. The catch? They\'ve got a list of 25 songs to be covered - one for each artist that comes their way, no duplicates. If the concept isn\'t clear, watch this video.. you\'ll get it.

The first session is from Ted Leo and The Pharmacists covering Tears for Fears \"Everybody Wants To Rule The World.\" Watch it here and then keep up with the project to see what bands end up covering the remaining 24 songs.

Next Big Sound is a forthcoming music tracking service for \"the industry\" to get an overview of how a particular artist is trending throughout the Internet. There\'s a lot of data out there and getting it all into an understandable format is not easy. Others have tried it and NBS says they\'ve got a system better than the rest. To prove it, they\'ve got a SXSW Overview running that shows the fastest rising bands during this years festival. How accurate is it? There\'s no way to know really but it looks great and there\'s really no reason to doubt it.. so check it out.

Photographer Joel Sartore has released a new book entitled RARE, which consists of images of a load of endangered species. Aside from serving as a document of species that may one day fail to roam the planet, it\'s also quite educational in terms of background information on each beast. Check out a bunch of samples here and a great promo video for the book here.

It\'s difficult to pick a favorite set of images from Paul Octavious but the JFK to SFO set is a great introduction. Aerial photographs - particularly of the giant segmented landscapes - are always fascinating.

Beyond that I\'d certainly recommend taking a look at A Day at The Yale Peabody with Omarion, The Hill, Stacked and Recycled Religion. Though really, there isn\'t a bad set in the bunch.

I have done plenty of gushing over the soundtrack to the film Make-Out with Violence and the band responsible for it, The Non-Commissioned Officers, so when Lake Fever Sessions were looking for acts to book I was extremely pleased to be able to get the band in for a proper recording. The session debuted on the Interwebs yesterday and it turned out great!

Of the three available songs I\'d say that \"Spidertown\" is probably the least immediately grabbing on but I can\'t recommend diving into \"Ride\" and \"Turn Me Down and Fade Me Out\" enough! Please, by all means, go partake!

Don\'t be fooled by the awkward looking birds on the Spritely site.. there\'s something powerful going on there that gets overshadowed by the cartoon-y look. Bascally, it\'s a character and image animation engine that allows for some great transitions and movement on a page without the use of Flash. Check out Quadrifoglio Rosso and his implementation of it - subtle, well done and eye-grabbing. And no Flash! I\'m really taken with the notion that one day simple Flash sites could easily be replaced by Javascript powered sites.. quite nuts.
