Industry Insider: Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s Mac Burrus

posted June 17, 2020 #

My good buddy Mac Burrus was recently profiled over at Spotify Insider for his work on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. If you've seen the Kimmel musical performances where Beck works a dayjob or Pusha T oscillates in 3D or Half Alive performs some insane choreography, Mac was likely involved.

Late Night TV doesn't get much credit for trying something different outside of its general format but I love that the Kimmel show pushes those boundaries and gets creative with it.

The interview is great read and just a tiny bit of acknowledgment for the creative work going on over there.

Hey vs Apple

posted June 17, 2020 #

Pretty entertaining thread from David Hansson over on Twitter about being held hostage by Apple's App Store.

Hansson is the creator of Ruby on Rails and Basecamp and several other successful products. He recently launched Hey, a new email application that tries to re-invent the whole paradigm. It's an interesting approach that's only slightly cut off at the knees by offering a 14-day trial, $99 price and calling the Inbox the Imbox because it's for Important Emails. Those are small complaints; I think it's admirable they're trying to tackle the email problem.

That's just the background info tho. They submitted the Hey app to the Apple App Store, got approved and then submitted some bug fixes. At that time, an Apple reviewer caught on to the fact that they aren't offering In-App Subscriptions. This may seem like No Big Deal but Apple has a pretty strict guideline in their terms of service that stipulates if you offer Subscriptions somewhere, you must also offer native Subscriptions via Apple... where they get 15%-30% of each transaction.

Lots of folks get upset in the same way Hansson is because they don't want to share their revenue with Apple; despite agreeing to the Terms of Service. If you want access to Apple's massive audience, you gotta pay the piper. Complaining about it - especially in the way @dhh does, comparing Apple to the mob - is a bit absurd.

Except for the fact that Apple is wildly inconsistent with this guideline. Netflix didn't offer In-App Subscriptions for a long time; neither did Amazon Prime and lots of other big names. In fact, Basecamp - one of Hansson's other products - has been in the App Store for years without IAP and it's never been a problem. These exceptions are made because of politics, partnerships and human error.

I don't have any grand statement to make about all this, I just find it interesting to watch. Android doesn't have this issue and they have, arguably, a larger market share (and a similar Guideline). Apple is allowed to make these decisions and exceptions, it's their App Store. They're in plenty of hot water for Antitrust violations but as a company with nearly a trillion dollar market value, I doubt they're intimidated by much.

Meadownoise - Threeve

posted June 12, 2020 #

Today, yk Records released the third album from Meadownoise in collaboration with Pet's Musical Park. Threeve is unlike anything I've put out on yk Records previously and probably unlike anything that I will put out in the future.
I've been listening to Meadownoise since 2013 and the debut album It's 4:00. I stayed transfixed over the course of the next year with the release of Dark Digest. It's been six years since then and expressing the growth and change to the music is extremely difficult to express.

The songs of Threeve can be challenging. Some might call them weird. I don't think that's inappropriate but I do think it'd be selling it short. Matt Glassmeyer, the man behind the name, has a long history with jazz, progressive pop (he was a member of Lambchop) and ambient outfits. He blends all those experiences together beautifully through the course of these eleven tracks.

"Cliff House Kids" is probably the most immediately accessible, a melancholy song in a straightforward pop format. "The Wired Remote" is an expansive sprawl cut with transmissions, struggling to be heard. There's something heartbreaking about it to my ears. "Feral Fruits" is a combination of whooshing swirls and ominous beats combined with the rantings of a poetic madman.

Every song is intriguing in its own unique way. For me, personally, it is reminiscent of The Books and Charles Spearin, two artists that continuously challenged me with their creations.

I hope you'll give it a listen, preferably start to finish / top to bottom. I fully admit it has its avant-garde qualities but I'd shudder to think that's a bad thing.

We Own This Town 201: Widening The Gaze

posted June 10, 2020 #

Two weeks back I crossed the threshold of 200 episodes of the We Own This Town Music podcast. I posted an episode looking back at the 15 years of coverage the show has provided but couldn't help but notice that the amount of music created by People of Color on the show was greatly lacking. If my show is meant to showcase music being made by everyone outside of Music Row and Pop Country, how was I primarily covering only white people? The answer is pretty simple, I wasn't doing the work to look for it. There's not an explanation for it beyond that. So, I decided to reset a bit.
I can't go back and change my coverage in the past but I can strive to be more inclusive and showcase a wider variety of musical genres from all people in the city. This episode consists entirely of music made by People of Color in Nashville and every episode after this I will do my damndest to be more balanced.

Look, no part of me thinks that changing my musical coverage on a podcast is going to make any sort of difference in the treatment of African-Americans and the marginalized. I'm on board with @blm_nashville (Black Lives Mattre Nashville), @gideonsarmyunited (Gideon’s Army United), @oversightnow (Community Oversight Nashville) & @nashvillepeoplesbudget (Nashville People’s Budget) to drive me to be directly involved in making a change and I hope you are as well.
