For many, many years I used to compile a Halloween mix. I made a lotofthem. A wholewholelot. It was a natural progression but I eventually shifted to making these mixes for my We Own This Town: Music podcast. I'm happy to say, the latest edition is now available.
As it is a podcast, there is some talking at the top but then it's just a solid 45 minutes of Halloween themed tracks. They're all musicians from the Nashville area so you may not be familiar with any of the names but I think you'll find it to be a pleasing listen.
At the very least, I implore you to listen to the first 30 seconds... I really went whole hog on the spooky intro.
A few things to start off your Halloween weekend. Listen to this this spooky playlist and if that's not enough for you listen to this one by my lovely lady and this Disney Nightmare Mix which never fails to deliver.
While listening to all that, take some time to peruse the Giphy Halloween Collections, there's just... so much. It's great.
Stay safe out there and have a safe and happy Halloween!
Dance Skeletons - somehow I've managed to encounter this gem only now, in 2020. It's been around but no matter when it finds you, it's a treat.
Pumpkin Dance - before he went on Dancing with the Stars, this was an unadulterated joyous gem of the Internet. 13 million views later, it still feels great. No Halloween is complete without this.
Shaboi - Curse Walk - and the Shaboi remixed version always works surprisingly well.
Carpetbagger Halloween - this YouTuber visits a bunch of Haunted Houses in the South and gets very scared. Yes, 20 minutes is a long video but his genuine shrieks are absolutely worth it.
Retro Halloween Set - there's a ton of these floating around and they're usually worth a little scrub through. Some amazingly absurd creations in here.
Making a Halloween playlist has been a long tradition for me. It may seem I sputtered off after 2017 but that's not the case! I've just shifted my focus over to my WOTT Music efforts. The newest episode of the show - The 2020 Halloween Spooktacular - may not have the fun catchy title that yk mixes have had in the past but it's every bit as enjoyable.
The mix starts a bit more lighthearted and then descends into darkness, as a good Halloween mix should. You can hear the version without an intro over here if you're not interested in hearing my dulcet tones for a few minutes at the top.
This mix is comprised of 100% local Nashville artists and I'm super happy with how it turned out. Goofy at times, incredibly creepy at others and loads of new music to discover if you like a particular track.
It's October so you know I've been compiling a Halloween playlist of absurdities. If you have suggestions, let me know. I want all the gems. Send them all!
Let's just dive into some distractions.
Sizzler Promotional Commercial 1991 - watch the entire 4:41 seconds of this. A book's worth of investigations and questions will swirl around you. How is American Freedom and Revolution related to a buffet? Did they shoot all of this? Why is that one couple making out so hard in a Sizzler? Mysteries of the universe. HT to Baldwin for this one.
Wendy's Chili - okay, so there's a whole YouTube of Training Videos (of course there is) and this Wendy's Chili Song is FIRE.
Marc Rebillet - Girl's Club - I am new to the world of Marc Rebillet. I was skeptical I would enjoy but I'll be damned if it isn't hilarious.
Megan the Stallion - Savage - I know nothing about Megan the Stallion but this performance is phenomenal for a myriad of reasons; the song, the message and the insane projections. Worth your time.
Gold Dancing Singing Skeleton - Grandin Road makes "high end" Halloween decorations. Most are actually pretty fun but this one is hysterically subtle. What a fright!
I recently put together an episode of the WOTT Music podcast that serves as a Halloween mix of music from Nashville area bands. In doing so, I stumbled upon The Children of the Night, an instrumental EP of absolutely perfect Halloween songs that has almost zero background information to go along with it.
I'd love to tell you more about the creator or the impetus behind the songs but none of that is available. I did some Internet sleuthing but my best guess - Daniel Medley - is a bit of a long shot.
Regardless of who created it I do suggest giving it a listen. It's sparse at times and does a great job at taking its time in setting a mood but it never retreats so far that you lose track of it. It's appropriately creepy but also uses plenty of acoustic instruments - xylophone, strings, general ambience - to give it a classic feel. I'm sad there's only one volume of it because I'm wearing it out.
It is on Spotify but good luck finding it via search, since the name conflicts with multiple other artists. It's that kind of mystery and effort that makes it so much more enjoyable.
I *might* do a special Halloween playlist this year if I can get my act together but, in the meantime, please do give yourself some time to enjoy this massive playlist of retro Halloween commercials. There are some real weird gems in there that you don't want to miss.
Here's some distractions for ya...
What is Spoopy? - someone asked me the other day wtf "spoopy" meant and I just sent them this video. That's not the full story but what more do you really need?
Animated Skeleton Dance - when they talk about the dark underbelly of YouTube Kids, this is what they mean, right? Horrifying.
The Pumpkin Dance - I've watched this countless times and it still satisfies every single time. I finally broke down and read the history of the bit and, frankly, it didn't sour it at all.
Super Cat Theme - can I be perfectly honest with you? I wish the Internet was 100% this content.
There's certainly a large part of this that is satisfying because of its nostalgic nature but lots of these are brand new to me and absurdly enjoyable.
