You may recall the Is That a Fish in Your Ear? animation from last week's Friday Videos but you may not have investigated further into the creators work. Matthew Young is a design student from the University of Leeds with a rather amusing portfolio of works. They are clever, well executed and well worth browsing through each and every one. I suggest starting with Books vs eBooks and make sure to hit E-Sting and The City... then maybe go follow him on Vimeo.
Officially making the switch from YouTube playlists to VHX Playlists. Why? Because I can add Vimeo and Youtube videos into one stream and because the compatibility with mobile browsers is actually better. Imagine that! Many many thanks to the VHX team for getting this together. If you're not already using their service, you really should be.
Is That A Fish In Your Ear? - promotion for the David Bellos book of the same name that talks about language and the peculiarities of specifics. via Paul.
Insane Office Escape - you may not love the music that goes along with this video but you will likely enjoy the first person perspective. Consider it a teaser to that new Spider-Man movie.
Billie Jean Dance - yes, this is your typical "Fail" video but it always warms the heart to see someone slightly injure themselves.
Time Travel Commercial - I was highly engaged by this viral 7UP commercial. I won't deny it, I chortled aloud several times.
Tom Selleck's Moustache - someone took it upon themselves to add Tom Selleck's moustache to a myriad of classic films. Improvement? You decide.
Feel free to watch this weeks playlist over on VHX. They're damn close to my perfect vision of an embeddable player so it's just a matter of time before I start using it all the time anyway.
SR - The Faceplant - terrible Metallica cover? Check. Ridiculously drunken fan? Check. Perfect Faceplant? You bet.. wait for it.
Osaka Station City - you wouldn't think waterfall technology was really an area that was getting a lot of love but based on this video you can tell that there have been some serious breakthroughs lately.
Panda Ying Hua on Rocking Chair - it's been awhile since I posted a pure, unadulterated cute animal video. This fills the quota a hundred times over.
I dunno how, or why, or what happened but my laptop is behaving in the most peculiar of ways. And by "peculiar" I mean, freezing every 30 seconds or so. Long story short, there's good reason this post isn't showing up until early afternoon. My apologies. The good news is, you can watch the videos on YouTube OR on VHX - since they just launched a beta playlist feature. Eventually, all Friday Videos will be through an embedded VHX player and we'll all thank them for it.
2011 Nike Mag - if somehow you missed the news, Nike is releasing a version of the Back to the Future shoe that Marty wore in the second movie. It's pretty damn close to the original with the exception of the fact that they don't self-lace. 2015 is right around the corner tho...
Stairway to Stardom - you can watch 30 seconds of this and your day will be complete. Or you can watch the whole thing and improve your entire weekend.
Hidden Camera Death - yes, this is from a super cheesy prank TV show.. but the gag is pretty morbid and, thus, much more amusing to me. Plus, I absolutely love the visual of a grim reaper - always a treat.
Back to the Start - a Chipotle ad featuring Willie Nelson covering a Coldplay song. It's always kind of odd to see a huge chain promoting "getting back to basics" because real basics would be Mom and Pop owned stores, not chains. But it's still a compelling video.
Other planets the same distance as the moon - not a funny / ridiculous video but a supremely interesting one. Seeing Mars in the night sky wouldn't be that weird... seeing Jupiter is a whole different story.
Dancing Marionette - the most awkward, sexualized marionette you'll ever encounter (hopefully). via Paul.
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra - "Even when I was a child, I was hated by skeletons." And also, "I sleep now." Must see this whole thing.
Bonus Videos
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared - Some rather friendly felt puppets explore the world of creativity. Obviously, it goes into some dark places but it's a great journey getting there.
That's All Folks - A canon fuse glued to plywood burning through paper to spell out "That's All Folks." I'd love to see this one in double time.
Back to the Future IV - I'm starting the rumor right now, this is a clip from a new Back to the Future film. Obviously I made that up and this is some sort of viral video for something that I don't really comprehend but it's just easier to believe that another sequel to the series is being made in another country with a legit Christopher Lloyd appearance.
Some weeks are better than others and this week has no shortage of greatness. Some may say it's quantity over quality but I'd argue that there's something for everyone. Be sure to watch the Bonus Videos too.
Japan World Cup 3 - don't ask to explain it. Just enjoy the prancing horse, the flopping seal, the yeti, the trojan horse and the insane musical performance.
SawStop Hot Dog Demo - if you were planning on sawing a hot dog anytime soon you may want to consider not procuring the SawStop blade.
PonPonPon - this music video is crazy enough just for the first 30 seconds but, as it progresses, it gets crazier and darker and way weirder (if that's even possible). via Chad.
Captain Awesome vs Artillery Shell - basically some dumb kids doing some dumb thing resulting in amusement. Fortunately they filmed the stupidity from a number of angles so you get to enjoy it over and over.
My apologies on the shortened Friday videos last week.. I could barely keep my eyes open all day. Hopefully this perfect morsel of a video treat - That's a Ten - will make up for it. Personally, I think a little lip smacking combined with such a memorable catchphrase is going to catch on big time.
I somehow caught one rather hellacious bug.. so I'm putting in a lot of time sleeping / not browsing the Internet. That being said, I'd hate to deprive you of video ridiculousness.. even if it is a shortened version. Enjoy the playlist.
Livin De Life - I am sure this guy is way too rich to be embarrassed but, lordy, he should be. How do old white men get talked into making rap videos?
This weeks playlist has one of my new favorite things ever.. I think it will for you too.
Mariachi Band Serenades Beluga Whale - if you asked me to name something outlandish that I'd love to see on the Internet this is not a combination my brain would ever conjure up. Fortunately, it exists regardless of that and is entirely perfect. The whale, Juno, appears to be legitimately amused. It's so good. Total PEVZ.
AutoTune The Pre-Race Prayer - you saw the original last week and now the Gregory Brothers have had their way with it. It's not much at first but it builds into a catchy number, as usual.
Banned 90s Lunchablez Commercial - Lots of NSFW language / imagery but, on the whole, the aggressive and over sexualized nature of a Lunchablez commercial is too ridiculous to deny. Just when you think the joke has run its course, they bring in some new goodness to keep you engaged.
What Turns Teens Off? - just another slightly-retro awkward weekend dance party clip.
BONUS
I'm A Stupid Cat - some NSFW language but probably the best insight into the mentality of a cat you'll encounter.
MOVE - "3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage... all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ....into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films....." - see also: Learn and Eat (though "Move" is the best one, imo)
This video showcasing the head stability of a Brown Owl is likely something I should save for the Friday Videos depot but it's too fascinating not to share immediately. See also, the GIF version.
I think you're in for a treat with this weeks playlist.. enjoy!
Nashville Invocation - while the legitimacy of praying before a race is certainly questionable you have to enjoy where this guy takes it. He's obviously a Talladega Nights fan.
Dancing Squid Bowl Dish - supposedly the squid is dead but the sodium in the soy causes the legs to move. So, yea, very weird but worth a viewing.
Spit Takes: Advanced - I think The Dribbler or the Randy Pope may be my favorite. Do a slow scrub through and catch The Naked Whale.. so good. Via Casey.
The Dark Knight Rises Trailer - NMA created a trailer for the new Dark Knight film that's even better than the actual teaser.
Apple Store Challenge - what will Apple employees put up with from customers. You'll be amused where they draw the line.
Dance Mix Smash Up - Todd has a series of phenomenal videos made for Big Freedia.. I never get tired of watching them.
Deleted "Lost" Scene - Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse present a new scene that explains a lot of what you were hoping the finale would cover.
Paineilmakitarakisa Siurualla - this guy has nearly 1,200 videos.. many of which seem to feature him thrashing and rocking out in rural locations. The internet is a very strange place. Thanks Invisible Creature.
Big weekend... it's probably best if you just stop working now. Here's your playlist and the breakdown below.
Planet of the Apes Party Fun Time - a ridiculous amount of work had to be put into making this ridiculous compilation of Planet of the Apes footage look like a serious dance party. I love all the subtle added details.
Look at this! - this was posted last December so it's probably really old news but, man, I love it. Look at this! The laugh is incredible.
Mini Motorcycle Tooth Pull - kids will always find inventive ways to pull teeth from their head.. this is a phenomenal example. If I ever end up with children, I will allow this kind of behavior and likely encourage it.
Let's Enhance Supercut - absolutely perfect compilation of Let's Enhance clips. The part about "an image enhancer that can bitmap" is easily my favorite.
Spider-Man vs Mirror's Edge - If you've not seen the official trailer for the Amazing Spider-Man reboot, watch that first. Then, let it hit you that a large chunk of the second half of the trailer is incredibly similar to the video game Mirror's Edge. I don't see this as being a big deal but I believe the Internet is all flustered over it!
Liam Finn - Cold Feet - not the greatest video but his new album Fomo is superb. Get it.
Jim Guthrie - So Small - a little bit of ingenuity goes a long way. Despite being released in 2003, I am just now discovering (and loving) the album this stems from - Now, More Than Ever.
I Can Go For Sax - how long has it been since you listened to this? Way too long. Put it on repeat for the next hour.. you won't regret it.
Pizza Machine Promo - yea, the first minute or so of this is super boring but once you hit 1:17 you will see why this is worthy of Friday Video status. A pizza so big that it requires a chandelier mount to move it around. America.
BEP - Everybody Poops - I can't help that I find this amusing. It's ridiculously well integrated. Or maybe this is the real song and I'm just totally ignorant.
Humpback Whale Rescue - not a funny or ridiculous video.. just a rather phenomenal story. A group of whale watchers end up rescuing a beast and then it celebrates for an hour with them. Nuts.
Count Tarakan - Istanbul not Constantinople - Duncan points out that it'd be a travesty not to include this one this week and I agree. What is going on here? So much production value for such a ridiculous verison of this song.
Thundershirt for Dogs - this is an actual product that you wrap around your pet to calm them during thunderstorms. The product itself seems ridiculous but the video host takes it to a new level.
KFC Commercial - courtesy of Peter Serafinowicz. He really has a lock down on vintage footage combined with absolutely absurd (and vaguely disturbing) voiceover. Place on plate....
Thoughts on Hairspray - Paul shares his nightmare fodder.. I think it's too ridiculous not to enjoy.
VFX SR - I dare you to watch this whole thing. I dare you. If you can't make it, just skip to the 8 minute mark and receive an awesome treat.
James Brown Miso Soup - rarely do I tire of enormous celebrities going to Japan and making absolutely ridiculous commercials. Gotta pay the bills!
Transformers 2: Exclusive Clip - I realize Transformers 3 is the latest in the series but this clip still stands as appropriate and perfectly ridiculous. via Jed.
RIP Ryan Dunn - an official Jackhouse video featuring Ryan Dunn. It's unfortunate the way he died but at least he has a grand archive of footage of enjoying himself with his friends.
FAIL Compilation June 2011 - yep, I still can't get enough of these. I know better but I don't care. I love them.
BONUS
We'll Kill U - the latest from Lonely Island.. it's the "Just 2 Guyz" duo once again.
This week should be subtitled "Accidental Animal Edition" because, frankly, the playlist is mostly animal vids (though not entirely). It's a quick one this week but entertaining.. look for the Bonus vids if you're hoping for a bit more substance.
Cat Watching Slayer - I feel like I may have seen this before but the pan over to the cat and slow reveal is too perfect not to enjoy.
Horrifying Ghost Footage - this guy has a ton of homemade videos that are all about this quality... right on the borderline between total stupidity and genuinely amusing. Sometimes it teeters more way one than the other but this one in particular is just perfect. via Shaboi.
I hope everyone has been watching the Colbert Nation / Third Man Records "Rock Odyssey" all week but, in case you haven't, please take some time to do so now. Sure, it might take a decent chunk of time out of your day but it's Friday - so do it: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 - as well as a performance and a Catholic Throwdown.
As always, here is the playlist and the breakdown below. I haven't even hit up my usual depots for videos yet so there may be an extreme list of Bonus videos this week but it seems like Eight videos is plenty to get you ready for the weekend!
David Byrne Interview - this may be too slow for some of you but the overall weirdness vibe to it is too amusing not to take in every second. And you actually get some good insight on The Talking Heads along the way.
Space Girl - montage of loads of ladies featured in vintage sci-fi films. It's likely better to supply your own soundtrack but there are loads of great visuals throughout. They just don't make `em like this anymore.
Yung Jake - Datamosh - pay attention the lyrics; he's just messing with you. Some NSFW language but I love the lazy style of everything but he obviously knows what he's doing.
Did you hear a click? - adorable couple Rita and Frank try to take a photo on their computer.. end up taking a video. The best.
One year of the moon in 2.5 Minutes - The moon is such a fascinating thing to me.. it's remarkable to see all of its subtle movements compressed down into such a tiny timeframe.
Happy in Paraguay - did I post this as a Friday video years ago? Yes. Is it still hysterical? Absolutely. Maybe even better than it was before.
BONUS
The Cooking Show: Money Shot - super cut of that "O Face" people give when they first taste the creations from a number of cooking shows. via Paul.
Science Fare - 4 minute episode of Mike Carlo animation. It's a bit crass at times but I was quite entertained. via Will.
Lioness tries to eat baby at the zoo - I assume you've all seen this by now but it's worth a revisit as a gentle reminder that Big Cats want to eat your children.
