And Introducing: A Journey To The End Of The Cast List

posted October 18, 2018 #

I've been a fan of Jez Burrows for some time. He's an accomplished designer, a clever guy and, from my one meeting, extremely nice. He has a new Kickstarter project called And Introducing, which aims to be an art book documenting the most absurd castings credits from a "century of cinema history."

His intro video breaks it down best but, essentially, he scoured hundreds of movies looking for ridiculous credits like "Lobster Woman", "Policeman with Theory" or "German Potato Salad Lady at Deli Counter." It's an immense list and an entertaining one to boot. Here's the high brow synopsis:
And Introducing is a survey of the kinds of characters that have existed on the periphery of movies almost as long as movies have existed. By gathering thousands of these credits and organising them into categories, we can see patterns and connections across both time and genre. We can see through a very specific lens how filmmakers and screenwriters rely upon things like gender, race, age, and beauty in order to fill in the narrative gaps between lead and supporting actors.

Also, not to undercut all that fancy talk too much, but, y'know, the book's funny.
Go check the Kickstarter page for more details on the project and to see the worthwhile reward levels offered.
