It seems that Ballroom Culture is having a bit of a Renaissance in the mainstream lately. If you're not familiar with "Ballroom", please take time to watch
Paris is Burning to get a grasp on the confluence of dance, fashion and community that makes up the long running event. OR, maybe just watch one of these two new shows that focuses on the same thing but in a more modern way.
- POSE - a scripted drama from Ryan Murphy that follows a new House being established and fighting their way to establishment and recognition. Definitely over the top sometimes but it looks great and, more importantly, shines a light on the difficulties that homosexual and transgender people experienced from outside communities and their own in terms of acceptance.
- My House - a VICE documentary series on current day Ballroom culture in NYC that follows a number of competitors through their experiences. First episode is Free, so you've got no excuse.
