Bootstrapped, Profitable, & Proud: Coudal

"One thing leads to another and all of a sudden you look at the work you’re producing and you’re not proud of it and you’re out at the bar after work making fun of your clients. That’s funny for a little while, but that’s no way to go through life. It makes you jaded. If you don’t like your job, there’s something wrong. And going to the bar and complaining about your job is a symptom of something wrong.”

-Jim Coudal

37Signals recently ran a phenomenal profile on Coudal. The piece mostly speaks to their line of products, their thinking behind them and how they came to conceive of them. For me, the most interesting part is the story of how they got to that point.. a serious disappointment from Coudal and his team with the work they were doing. Instead of continuing to trudge forward doing production work for people who "knew less than them" they forged out on their own. They never expected to reach everyone with their ideas; just enough people to keep them sustained.. and it worked! It's a must read for everyone - designer or not - as there are great, inspiring, lessons in there for all.
