Creeper Lagoon - Long Dry Cold

posted August 24, 2006 #

Sometimes you have to admit when you're wrong. It's not always easy but it is often neccasary. Now seems to be one of those times. I have often spoke poorly of the fact that Creeper Lagoon continued as a band after Ian Sefchick left. Everything they had done up to that point, in my mind, was a collaboration. And it worked quite well.

So, they released Remember The Future and it didn't do a ton for me. And now they've put out Long Dry Cold, which I immediately judged before hearing a single note of it. It wasn't a collaboration from the two songwriters I had come to expect, how could it be good? If Sharky Laguana was the primary songwriter than the majority of songs were going to be dark and almost brooding, with little balance of the light hearted, upbeat Creeper Lagoon that I enjoyed so much. But this is the part of the experience where I realized I was wrong. I've had the album for several months now and it has just finally clicked how enjoyable it is.

Is it entirely different than Take Back The Universe and Give Me Yesterday? Yes. I Become Small And Go? Nope.. it's actually strangely similar. As if it were created by the same band, just eight years later. The introduction of occasional female vocals ("Parked Car") are a nice addition to the fold and the immediacy of tracks like "Sell You Short" hit the spot just right.

So it is official. I was wrong. Sorry bout that Sharky.
