I've been a fan of Mike Mills since his days as a graphic designer but his work as a film director has really taken my appreciation of him to new heights. If you have not seen
20th Century Women yet, find some time to see it very soon.. it's phenomenal. I posted some of this in the sidebar recently but if you missed it, please join me in a Mike Mills deep dive:
- Mike Mills AMA - a great rundown of insight for the man's process, his inspiration and how he deals with criticism.
- 1979.fm - a streaming radio station curated by Mills featuring the influential music from this era. There's a Spotify version as well but it's not as complete.
- 1979 in Images - back in 2012 Mills compiled this five-minute video of stills from 1979. It's an onslaught but it's entrancing.
- Lessons We Can Learn From Daisies - during the AMA, Mills says he was inspired by the Czech New Wave film "Daisies" for the sped-up psychedelic effect using occasionally in 20th Century Women. I had not heard of this film but it looks great. I feel like this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of inspiration to follow from Mills.
