Misha Mishajashvili

posted January 10, 2018 #

I recently became aware of the works of Misha Mishajashvili, an artist from Estonia that has a particularly fascinating discography of works. The latest album, simply titled 2018, is a mixture of choir and orchestral samples, big programmed drums and plenty of distortion. It's honestly like finding a mixtape from another planet. Misha was kind enough to describe some of the recording process.
I record all of the music - bass, drum, percussion - at home with the help of a tape machine - most of time I cut tape by hand to make sound fit to song. It is long process but often works! The orchestra and choir samples I record from church or pull from a tape I inherited from my father and mother. Then i mold all together with help of a tape machine (and sometimes the computer) for best sound.
It's a compelling combination of tape loop beats, 50's dancehall horns, orchestration and plenty of disintegration and decay,
