Noirlac

A few years ago I posted about the repository of pixel backgrounds from Noirlac. In the time between now and then, the reserves of images has grown by leaps and bounds. I'm still blown away by how much atmosphere and detail early videogame artists were able to pack in to such a limited palette but the battle still rages on: 8-bit or 16-bit? Clearly the limitations of 8-bit make for some fascinating scenes but the 16-bit undertakings often allow for a bit of animation, which is nice. Either way, pixel art like this can often ride that bizarre line of tension between the hyperreal and fantasy.
Oh, and as a bonus you can also order any of the backgrounds as t-shirt prints now.
