Two important bits here at the end of the week. First, if you haven't watched Fleabag, Season 2, you're doing yourself a disservice. Generally, if a show breaks the fourth wall, it's obnoxious (see Saved by the Bell, House of Cards) but it's a device used ever so perfectly throughout this show.
Bill Hader impersonates Schwarzenegger [ DeepFake ] - generally, an interview with Conan wouldn't be quite enough to make it to Friday Videos but this DeepFake replaces Hader's face with Arnold's and it's insanely realistic. Hard to look away.
Garth Brooks - The Red Strokes - I was recently reminded of the existence of this video and it's... something! Garth playing in a completely white room that gets consumed by blood is not a pitch I would have thought would make it into production but here it is!
Pikachu + Key + Peele - where Key & Peele impersonating a prior dance or was that original choreography? How deep does this meme go?
A Flock of Metal - the same guy that does the Smooth Jazz versions of Metal songs will also make pop songs into Metal versions. I'd not seen this Flock of Seagulls rework and it is legit good.
Great Day - The Lonely Island recently released their visual album for Bash Brothers over on Netflix but, honestly, I just want to watch this sketch over and over.
News Bloopers 2018 #4 - One of my best friends had twins yesterday. So, if he finds himself with a free moment I'm posting this here for his enjoyment. Congrats, buddy.
Lastly, my pettiest tweet also seems to have the most likes of all my tweets. Is this a sign I should be more petty or just a signal of what the platform prefers?
I just walked by a 10ish year old who is waiting for a bus and reading an actual paper book aloud to themself and my heart exploded. Nice knowing y’all. I’m literally dead now. https://t.co/OnsGWnNHoX

In Nashville (and likely most other cities), there is a public park off the beaten path that was taken over by a group of homeless individuals, resulting in a rather impressive Tent City. These people all had jobs and were attempting to get out of the situation they were in but had not been able to earn enough to afford a more permanent residence. Filmmakers Jace Freeman and Sean Clark moved in to the Tent City to document the lives there, right as the city decided to clamp down on allowing the residents to stay.
I was fortunate enough to see an early screening of the resulting film - Saint Cloud Hill - this week. It is, as you might imagine, pretty heartbreaking. The leader of the encampment, Chris Scott, is providing a harbor for people to get their lives together. He helps people get out of addiction, find work and feel safe. The city promised to find new homes for everyone staying there but ended up just putting them in a hotel for two weeks and nothing more.
The film will show on PBS stations tonight - May 30th - as part of the Reel South series. If you have the chance to watch it, please do. The film itself may be Nashville-centric but the problems are much further reaching.
Nashville Demystified is a podcast I help distribute that documents Alex Steed and his recent move to Nashville, learning the city's history through interviews with people who have been here awhile and with people that recently moved here. He does a great job of diving deeper than just "what restaurants should I go to?" He looks to find out what the homelessness problems are, what gentrification issues are in place, what the local craft beer council is up to and much more. It's an excellent way for a new person to learn about the city and for lifetime residents to get some insight they may be lacking.
He asked me to sit down for an interview and talk about the Other Music Scene; the one that exists outside of Country Music and Music Row. I'm not sure I am the most expert on the topic but, in a rare fit of optimism, I think I did a pretty good job.
The episode is available to stream on the web or on whatever podcast app you prefer; Spotify, Apple, Overcast, etc. If you're interested in hearing my nerdy voice for about 45 minutes, this is for you!
Happy to announce a new artist and new upcoming release for yk Records this Summer; The Robe. The self-titled debut LP is the work of multi-instrumentalist Rollum Haas; a Nashville musician best known for his drumming but a regular collaborator with Coupler, Tristen, lylas and many others.
The entire record is a wonderful blend of pop sensibilities with a bit of krautrock vibes throughout. That's a broad generalization but people are gonna like it.
If you haven't already been inundated with the news about Playdate, the new handheld gaming console from Panic, please take a moment to browse the wonderful site. Very briefly, they describe the history of the project, the first batch of games coming for it and why it has a physical crank on the side.
It won't be available until early 2020 but it looks like a fun distraction and the price point is only $150, which is hard to argue with.
Personally, I don't own a game console that I actively use anymore but I continue to love the idea of some casual gaming. iOS games are fun but it's not the same experience without a D-pad and some buttons. I'm not sure if I'll order one of these or not but it certainly seems like it could scratch my particular itch.
If you're not a regular viewer of Contrapoints (aka Natalie Wynn), please let this serve as a reminder to subscribe. Her latest video documents the process of her Facile Feminization Surgery, a myriad of bone shaving and reshaping to help eliminate some of her more male structures. Furthermore, she goes into a deeper conversation about her desire to be beautiful, social double standards around such beauty and how apps like FaceTune are hurting our own self-perceptions.
Her videos are lengthy - generally around 30 minutes - which I understand is a time commitment most people browsing a 14-year old blog don't really have the time for. But she's great - her insights are rapid fire and worth much thoughtful consideration. So, mark it in your Watch Later queue or play it in the background. And then be sure to Like and Subscribe!
