This Photo Wake-Up project is blowing up my tiny little brain. Given a single photo input, a 3D model can be generated and animated. The above demo video is full of examples, all insanely impressive. They even go as far as to explain, broadly, what is happening behind the scenes.
Apparently tech like this has existed since at least 2007 but this newest take on the idea is the most robust and can even exist within a full AR space.
The examples they use are, surely, best case scenarios (i.e. no overlapping body parts, very crisp images, etc) but that doesn't make the concept any less bonkers. I've watched this four times at least.
Great writeup from PepRally, aka Erica Gorochow, on a behind-the-scenes peek for the immersive four screen display of Hasan Minaj's show Patriot Act on Netflix. The breakdown is impressive to say the least. I'll let the work speak for itself; go check out all those sweet gifs.
Site update! Excited to finally share work done for Netflix's Patriot Act with Hasan Minaj, made with @slanted_studios. Take a behind the scenes peek at the show's graphics guide process ☞ https://t.co/kKEw3aFkwB https://t.co/4zMo0lA3M5
Very important idea: always pronounce “podcast” as “podgecast”, but mumble it a bit so people don’t know if you’re saying it wrong. Soon the podge people will be the majority, and no one will know how it happened.
And if you’re an LGBT employee working at @YouTube, what the fuck are you doing?
Helping a guy sell “Socialism Is For Fags” t-shirts?
That company isn’t your friend. It’s arming the monsters that we’ve spent our lives trying to get away from. Walk out of there.
Most musicians probably wouldn't spin an arachnid-related near-death experience into new merch, but most musicians aren't Jasmin Fucking Kaset. https://t.co/T7MXRDYLIp
I wish I had written myself a letter in 2005, still unsealed, that read “I unironically like and respect Keanu Reeves.” What social cachet I would have now!
A movie that advertises “you won’t believe the twist,” and then the movie is okay, I guess, but after it’s over, just before the credits, the whole cast dances to ‘The Twist’ by Chubby Checker and it’s AMAZING.
The movie could be about dealing with loss or something.
Regardless of your feelings on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it's hard to deny that Colbert himself is a thoughtful, whipsmart individual. With that in mind, it's no surprise that this New York Times interview with him is an insightful and enjoyable read. There are several portions of it worth pulling out as quotes not to miss but I'll just go with this one, as I believe it's my favorite.
I remember Jon Stewart saying, when he was on “The Late Show,” that he was glad he wasn’t digging in the turd mines anymore. Is it ever dispiriting to spend so much time engaging with bad news?
The metaphor that I use is that there’s this pool of radioactive sludge, which is the daily news. My job is to be lowered like carbon rods into that radioactive sludge and absorb the radiation of the insanity that happened today. Then they take me out and put me in front of the camera, and I irradiate it back at the audience at a much lower, nonlethal rad level. That’s kind of the job. It’s a transformation of the poison into something entertaining. Do I feel poisoned by doing that? Yeah, a little bit. But I get to go do the jokes. I need the audience as much as some of them say they need the show. If the show really works and it feels organic, then the poison’s drained out of me.
He also manages to get in some great bits about why Lord of the Rings is so influential to him but his take on the role of comedy is one of the most tasteful and accurate I've run across.
I don’t care that the film is going to be a train wreck- i love that King of the Monsters is leaning into Chonky Godzilla.
I am here SPECIFICALLY for the out of breath after a flight of stairs, sweats while eating, severe sleep apnea Godzilla.
