So a couple days ago, one of my coworkers accidentally let 22 quarts of ranch dressing slip out of her hand... https://t.co/cMDwUAqfOZ

Apparently this is supposed to be anti-trans propaganda put out by the Catholic Church but like... That's the single most inspirational and metal thing I've ever seen https://t.co/RLSmqYe5Ep

Soviet Control Rooms

This repository of Soviet Control Room images is fascinating for a number of reasons. First and foremost, any time you have industrial design that does a very complex thing with an overtly simplified design, you've got my attention. Secondly, some of the images depict flat screen monitors; meaning these beasts are far from retired. Lastly, it's hard to imagine being in a room with so many switches, dials, gauges and displays, much less understanding what they're telling you as a whole.

Lots more to see.

My Fantasy Funeral: Becky Delius

posted March 18, 2019 #

I just mentioned this recently but it bears repeating. I'm working with Ryan Breegle on a new podcast series called My Fantasy Funeral that asks each guest to design their own funeral - what songs will be played? who will speak? where will their remains rest? The first episode is out today.
The inaugural guest is none other than Becky Delius, my partner in life and a wonderful human being (not necessarily in that order). Becky speaks about her humanitarian work efforts, her love of over-the-top fashion and how she came to select her five songs to play at her wake.

Due to the general concept of the show, it's a bit macabre but, moreso, it's incredibly fascinating. Becky's answers are thoughtful and insightful. I'm lucky to have her in life and happy she made for such a great guest on this show.

Just as a bit of housekeeping, you can subscribe to the show on Apple, Spotify, Google and anywhere else you like to hear a show.

It’s blowing my mind that Beto was in the Cult of the Dead Cow. I’m sure a lot of you don’t understand what this means, but it’s the computer geek version of finding out Bernie Sanders was in the Wu-Tang Clan

MAVS- Mather OST

posted March 14, 2019 #

The latest Makeup and Vanity Set release is the soundtrack to the short film Mather. Hearing a MAVS score is always interesting in and of itself but this particular project is something a bit extra special. The film was directed by Chase Burton, who just happens to be deaf. He used a mostly deaf crew, predominantly deaf actors and the film is, mostly silent. So, how does a director review a score in that scenario? From MAVS:
chase would explain that he could 'listen' to my music by feeling it physically. i spent time studying two incredible Deaf musicians, evelyn glennie and christine sun kim. i also spent time studying methods like demonstrating rhythm and music through ASL (American Sign Language), how words can be similar but are defined and distinguished by handshape, location, movement, orientation and facial expression; that so much information is contained in simple hand motions and movements and that together they form intense and emotional contexts.

the result was a score written with basic sources- with sine waves and human voices and strings. chase's work is deeply personal...
For me, this is a landmark Makeup and Vanity Set release as it establishes yet another style and execution that Matthew Pusti is capable of. He's known for making dark, foreboding compositions but this is different. It may instill similar feelings at times but the approach is unexpected.

I'm enjoying the listen as it is immersive, sometimes tense and sometimes sprawling. Well worth diving into.
