Karl Lagerfeld Dies At 85

posted February 19, 2019 #

It's entirely possible that the passing of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld means very little to you. Personally, I'm torn between a lack of investment in the luxury fashion world and a keen appreciation for Fashion As Art. Whenever you see a high-end fashion show with outrageous clothes and someone remarks on the impractical outrageous designs, take a beat and remember that fashion shows aren't about clothes you're meant to buy at Target.

So, even if you never have before, take some time to appreciate the Lagerfeld legacy. The works he created may not be something you'd ever see yourself in but they are absolute works of art. Then steer yourself on over to Netflix and watch the Seven Days Out episode on the Chanel Haute Couture Fashion Show. Stunning, to say the least.

Look, everyone gets involved with some dumb idiot for a while when they’re young. Maybe he’s hot, or he’ll make your parents mad, or he’s just so stupid you think he’s joking. Whatever - the USA is only 243 yrs old & in country years that’s like 24. We’ll meet someone nice soon.

Friday Videos - Feb 15th, 2019

I must admit, I'm a little disappointed in the offerings for #wtf and #wtf #dance over on Giphy but it does yield some fruit, so I can't complain.

Been enjoying this Spotify playlist inspired by Mort Garson, early Moog and vintage synthesizer music. You will enjoy as well.

And now this...
  • Yesterday - a new Danny Boyle movie in which only one man knows who The Beatles are. Seriously, that's the plot. As Forest said, there is no more hit and miss director than Danny Boyle.
  • Missing Teens Friends Go On TV To Plead For Her Release - this Onion News Network segment is the pinnacle of acting.
  • Bill & Ted & Chuck - the opening scene of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure recut with the original track "I Can't Break Away" by Chuck Jackson, rather than Big Pig. One acquaintance of mine reviewed it as "too postmodern." Everyone's a critic.
  • Windows 95: Hall of Tortured Souls - more Easter Eggs in software please, thank you.
  • Little Diddy - you see it coming but it still hits home. I hate that I loved this.
  • .flex Best Meme - you can tell from the title this is going to be Deep Internet. I really hate that I loved this.

The Mirrorworld

posted February 15, 2019 #

There's a lengthy read available over at WIRED entitled "AR Will Spark the Next Big Tech Platform - Call It Mirrorworld" and I can't suggest reading it enough. The title is a bit more hand-holding than it needs to be but, basically, it discusses the fact that everything around us is being documented and digitized into a digital copy; a mirror copy of reality into the virtual.

The piece does a great job of selling that idea and the benefits that can come from it. Cameras, robots and AI documenting our environment; sharing that information with one another and learning from one another - i.e. automated cars that inform one another of road conditions. It also warns of the obvious privacy concerns of having cameras on everything around you, capturing everything from every conceivable angle to fully understand it.

It also makes a great point about how Augmented Reality marks the end of thinking of "The Internet" or "Cyberspace" as some other realm. We've always cast digital technology as somewhere else (see Lawnmower Man, The Matrix or The Firm for prime examples) but that's no longer true. Our world and the Mirrorworld are the same, one augmenting and informing the other.

It's a lofty piece and certainly worth reading with a critic's eye. This little quip really stood out to me:
The great paradox is that the only way to understand how AR works is to build AR and test ourselves in it. It’s weirdly recursive: The technology itself is the microscope needed to inspect the effects of the technology.
Obviously, I don't disagree but the idea that you can't know the benefits or dangers of something until you've already made it, is worrisome!

It reads like a sci-fi manifesto at times; a (mostly) positive approach that I greatly enjoyed.

Bandsplainer: Brian Jonestown Massacre

posted February 15, 2019 #

A new episode of Bandsplainer has posted. This one finds host Olivia Ladd and guest John Condit discussing The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Like many others, I was introduced to Brian Jonestown Massacre through their beef with Dandy Warhols and the film Dig!. I've always kept an ear on them over the years and enjoyed their diversity and exploration of their sound. So, to have Olivia and John document their discography and discuss exactly that variety, is a real treat.

The show is up on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google or wherever you like your podcasts fed to you from.

Season 3: fan/fiction w/ Andrew/zach

posted February 14, 2019 #

Andrew Gumm and Zach Duensing have returned for a third season of fan/fiction. The first episode of the season is, appropriately, Valentine's Day themed.
There's a lot of great plans in the works for the third season in terms of guests that will be joining them to discuss creative fan fiction but this first episode is a classic dive into fan created stories; all themed around Love and Relationships.

You can subscribe on Apple, Spotify, Google or wherever you like to hear your shows.

Can't Unsee

posted February 14, 2019 #

The comparison game of Can't Unsee requires a great attention to detail. If you're the sort of person that is capable of noticing differing line-heights, vague opacity differences or inconsistent rounded corners - this is the game for you!

The game embodies the most nit-picky part of being a designer; really harping on the small details. Tho, as we know, the little details can be big.
