A new installment of the We Own This Town Music podcast I run is available. I am happy to report that I was successfully able to switch it up a bit this week and instead of playing 20-30 minutes of new music, I sat down with Jordan Lehning and chatted for about an hour.
Jordan is a writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist that's been making music in the Nashville area for a long time. He's been one of the driving forces behind Eureka Gold, The Non-Commissioned Officers and his own solo work - most recently Long Live the Dead. We chat about his history, his process and his work behind the boards for folks like Caitlin Rose or Jasmin Kaset. He's also kind enough to share an unreleased song that stems from the inspiration of Pee-Wee Herman's world; which is certainly not to be missed.
Many thanks to Jordan for taking the time to chat and share his work. I am hopefully that the podcast will continue to feature creative folks like this and firmly embed the idea that Nashville is Not Just Country Music.
It's been four years since the last album from Mark Oliver Everett's Eels and even longer since I've really dug my heels into a solid listen. With the release of The Deconstruction comes the video for "Bone Dry", a stop-motion piece featuring a bearded skeleton traversing the horrors of a graveyard. There are clear influences of The Skeleton Dance and The Nightmare Before Christmas but who wouldn't want those two things fused together into a music video?! It works extremely well and is a shoe-in for all future Halloween playlists.
I don't know much of anything about the band Crumb but their video for "Locket" is really something to behold. On one hand it's a drug-addled journey featuring hypnotic, hallucinatory optics but on the other hand, it's an incredibly clever use of cameras and subtle effects.
The EP from which this song belongs is already released and you can read more about the band here.
we are for real in the dumbest era of american political history. like they’ll skip this era in the series. this is the phantom menace of american politics. https://t.co/XXbSGxijw6
Everything is terrible but my cousin’s 9-year old daughter Alice has been quietly and masterfully slaying the @NewYorker’s caption contest and it’s pure delight. https://t.co/Lhzmq7Pnsb
Kanye West as a Tame Impala song - if this wasn't done by Super Deluxe it wouldn't be half as great as it is. The absurdity levels are perfect.
Hermeto Pascoal - Musica da Lagoa - two parter here. Hermeto Pascoal is a folk musician seen here making music with flutes and bottles in a lake. It's got a real Cult vibe to it but it's delightful in its oddness.
Hermeto Pascoal - Misterios do Corpo - here Pascoal is making mysterious sounds with his body. I'd say it's also delightfully odd but I think it may cross the line into complete "WTF" territory. It's also, definitely, an endurance challenge. That being said, I doubt you can look away.
Rosie's Twin Kegs Commercial - this is maybe only funny to Nashville residents but a local dive bar has been releasing a series of very strange, soap opera, commercials. I know half of the people in this one and it doesn't make it any less weird.
The Best Wiper Blades in the World and Why - absolutely nothing here other than honest insight into wiper blades and I watched every second of it. His enthusiasm is infectious.
Falure - Dark Speed - I've been very pessimistic on Failure releasing new music after Fantastic Planet but they recently started releasing music from their forthcoming fifth album and I don't hate it. It's different but I think I am open to it this time around. Pretty nice video, too.
@yewknee @BreakThruRadio @thejlm glad you're getting into them! check out my show tomorrow for an interview and more music from their label, @firetalkrecs ??
