Friday Videos - March 23rd, 2018

posted March 23, 2018 #

Looking forward to some yk records announcements coming up and have been busy prepping that. In the meantime, I've been diving deep on that Heaven's Gate podcast, you should do the same.

Anyway, you're here for the distractions!
  • Chiitan Watermelon Attack - I nabbed this off Twitter, so hopefully it doesn't get yanked for copyright violation. Here's what you need to know, Chittan is a Japanese Otter mascot that has given the world of a smattering of hilarious videos featuring nothing but absurd tasks. There's plenty more on the official feed and around YouTube, enjoy the deep dive.
  • What Made Me Want to be a Greaser? - a vlog about how "Frosty the Greaser" came to be. I find this endearing and honest but also a nice reminder that I am very happy that I was not a teen when tools like YouTube existed.
  • Neil Young - "Wonderin" - 1983 music video from Mr. Young in which he teamed up with The Shocking Pinks and did a little doo-wop. The fashion here is speaking to me.
  • That's Alotta Ducks! - a massive swarm of ducks crossing the road. 40 seconds of "say whaaa?" Just enjoy it and don't think about any potential tragic backstory that may be involved.
  • Big Game Liquid Slam commercial - I barely remember this 90's commercial but, in hindsight, it really goes too far. ;)
  • TALKBOY Extended Commercial - it's amazing how long these commercials used to be and what they got away with.
  • Aleatory Music with Farm Implements - here's what I love about this, it's not aleatory music OR farm implements, it's an animation of composed music. It's entertaining but that completely inaccurate title makes it even better.
  • Gordon Ramsay's Pizza has Too Much Oil - an untapped resource.
  • Grandma Rages - just downright delightful.

If you are having a conversation with someone and they look down to check their smartwatch, start talking about something else entirely. You: How was the movie? Them: Great, although I thought... [checks watch] You: And that is why I've always thought Quebec should be liberated.

Tishk Barzanji

I'm blown away by the entirety body of work from Tishk Barzanji. The photography work is compelling but the Digital and Mixed Media pieces are mind boggling creations of surreal worlds, insanely detailed textures and various modernism influences. It's not easy to encapsulate with a few images or words but a deep dive will serve you well.

Paul Nicholson Aphex Twin Sketches

posted March 21, 2018 #

This Paul Nicholson interview is brief but enlightening. He walks through the process of how he created the Aphex Twin logo and packaging for Selected Ambient Works Vol 2, as well as throws in some anecdotes about his friendship with Richard James. The quote at the end is especially poignant:
"Within the music industry there's a freedom and willingness for cutting edge and experimental artwork that you just don't get in most areas of design."
These days there's also a lot less money in music industry design but that comes with the creative freedom territory.

Conspiracy: Between the first and second Gremlins, something changed about Gizmo. Hear me out- it is Gremlins canon that they possess ancestral memory, even as a form of reincarnation (Stripe is reborn as Mohawk). Did Gizmo discard his original body in favor a newer, "cuter" one? https://t.co/5uyhNCoLqn

Hana Holquist

posted March 20, 2018 #

If you are a dedicated viewer of RuPaul's Drag Race, you may have noticed the Drag Queen Milk wearing a rather audacious outfit on the season finale. This work sprung from the mind of Hanaquist, an NYC fashion designer with a consistent presence in the drag world.

Her official portfolio is a stunningly diverse offering of billowing dresses, Illuminati wear, conceptual pieces and the aforementioned crocheted wonder.

The images above do no justice to the quality and breadth of her work. Highly recommend a deep dive into her official site and Instagram feed to reach full comprehension of her abilities.

Vidalotry / Hollywood And Howard

posted March 20, 2018 #

The latest episode of Vidalotry, Hollywood and Howard, is a compelling look into Gore Vidal's involvement with Hollywood - namely his writing on a Classic that stirred a bit of trouble.
On the whole, these episodes are incredibly refreshing to hear someone speak so eloquently on topics of homosexuality, entertainment, politics and even marriage from a time that we all consider to be less informed. Vidal really was a pioneer and I think these episodes show how we're reaping the benefits of the path he laid.
