Whatever your thoughts are on the film adaptation of
Annilhilation (I loved it), you can't deny that the effects were superb. I highly recommend reading through
this interview with visual effects supervisor Andrew Whitehurst that walks through their inspiration, their execution and how carefully they tread the line with subtle effects throughout. The entire portion about
Mandlebulb shapes is enough to make it a worthwhile read but they go into great detail about the creatures in the film, how practical effects were augmented and how the final scene was created.
