Friday Videos - March 2nd, 2018

posted March 2, 2018 #

Had a busy week and am looking ahead to many more busy weeks. Being busy is good, never forget that. Let me know what you're busy with - I'd love to see it.

Here's some videos to help give you a break.
  • My Future Life - a delightful video sent via Paige that captures a man being bombarded by 10 puppies. This is the future life we should all yearn for.
  • Man's First Escalator Ride - not much happens here but his befuddlement that turns to a group of people helping him out is heartwarming. And that mall music doesn't hurt to drive the drama.
  • Alex Jones has the chills - I can only imagine there are an infinite number of bizarre Alex Jones edits out in the world but gotta love an idiot being forced to sound even more idiotic through the power of the Internet Edit.
  • One Hour, One Life - trailer for the latest game by Jason Rohrer. If you don't know Rohrer, listen to this. The new game looks clever, fun and especially poignant. A Rohrer trademark.
  • Look at This Car - I've either never seen this or it's been long enough that I've completely forgotten it. 30 million views that I agree with.
  • Milwaukee Lights - 23 seconds of early morning newscaster confusion over some lights. Nothing to it but I love these sorts of things. The explanations are dubious, which makes it even better.
Endurance challenge for the weekend: I dare you to try and make it all the way through this parody video. It is brutal and I only made it 33 seconds.

The Rise of Cassettes

posted March 2, 2018 #

Bryan shared a rather interesting piece from Uproxx on the rise of cassettes. The article covers the fact that vinyl sales have been on the rise but the financial commitment and manufacturing times make it very difficult for indies to constantly churn them out. The cassette, as odd as it may seem, enters as an affordable alternative. I think the primary point regarding the success for the format can be summarized in this quote from Dan Goldin, owner of Exploding in Sound Records:
"A band that plays a lot of shows, in our experience, sells a lot of tapes," he says. "It's little commitment to buy a $5 tape that you can fit in your pocket versus a $15 record."
Jessi Frick, of Father/Daughter Records, even theorizes that most people buying physical formats don't even listen to them, they're just buying the items to support the artist and have a representation of their tastes.

I can't disagree with any of the above. Vinyl is expensive and I think fans want to support the artist but may not have $15-$20 to do so. I'm not opposed to cassettes and have made a few myself but I would hope that any physical item that gets produced is done so with the intention of being fawned over, adored and listened to. I'm sure neither Frick or Goldin are truly convinced otherwise but if you just want to support an artist, why not buy the digital download?

TLDR: putting out records is hard.

Alanna Hale

posted March 1, 2018 #

My good friend Alanna Hale recently relaunched her official photography portfolio site. It's a beautifully clean grid of crisp images culled from her years of shoots. Unlike a lot of my photography friends, Alanna does a lot of Travel and Food shoots - as opposed to band press photos or live music photography. She really excels in the Portrait department - able to capture a great deal of personality.. often without feeling posed at all.

Nice to see her site get an upgrade and showcase more of her latest work. I look forward to more.

No part of me expects anyone reading this to actually download and try out David Lynch Teaches Typing but I do expect you to simply view the accompanying graphics and appreciate them. Lynch drawn in ANSI and paired with a pair of floating hands is a worthwhile visage for your eyeballs.

Annihilation

posted March 1, 2018 #

I recently saw Annihilation, the Natalie Portman vehicle written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and based on the 2014 Jeff VanderMeer book. To say the least, it was a captivating delight. For fear of spoiling the experience for anyone I won't go into any details but just know that it's a far cry from the book but no less engaging for it.

There's lots of writings about the film speculating and postulating what it all means. I think the beauty of the film is largely in its ambiguity. I enjoyed reading this and this and this but I can't say for sure if I agree with any of them.
The above is an edit of one of the more memorable musical cues of the film and an interview from composer's Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow to go along with it. The music is as integral to the experience as anything else... just another reason to love the film.

Please go see this film. Not only is it actually a rewarding viewing but it's a nice message to Hollywood that people can watch smart films, despite the assumption otherwise.

We Own This Town: Volume 102

posted February 27, 2018 #

Hey, it's another episode of my podcast We Own This Town: Music! I know I just posted an episode a week ago but in trying to keep myself beholden to an actual schedule of releases (every two weeks), I had to get another one out the door. So, please dive into Volume 102, featuring a pleasing variety of pop songs, weird electronic music, some chiptune and a few reliable indie rock songs.
Seriously, check out the Joe Pisapia and Dan Burns tracks at the very least! Continue Reading...

High Maintenance Soundtrack

posted February 27, 2018 #

Are you watching HBO's High Maintenance? It is, quite frankly, probably the best thing on TV. The general show structure jumps floats from character vignette to character vignette, loosely tied together by "The Guy" - an affable and melancholy pot dealer. On paper, I can imagine it not sounding too enticing but the writers have done an absolutely stellar job of making The Guy believable funny, sympathetic and empathetic.

I can't endorse the show enough but also can't help but augment that with an endorsement for the soundtrack. HBO recently released the Season 2 playlist of artists featured on the show but, more importantly, there's also an entire album of original music from Chris Bear (of Grizzly Bear). The songs are short on that original score but such a delight. Fingers crossed they release another volume of these for the latest episodes.

Cream Spin YK

I promise, sometime soon, I'll stop posting about my A Night Of soiree that I held here in Nashville but the local alt-weekly just posted a rather favorable rundown of the entire affair and I can't help but share. I mean, check out this summary!
The show was yet another reminder of the vast variety of music that's constantly on the boil here in our fair city - as well as how much of a difference it makes to have someone like Eades so deeply invested in it.
How am I not going to share that?! Aside from my own ego praise, there's actually a ton of kind words to the bands involved who were, clearly, the entire reason for the night. I am happy to have put it together and even more pleased that others enjoyed it.
