Holiday Music

Given that it is December and their name is amusingly confusing this time of year, I'd like to make note that I've been enjoying the latest release from Holiday Music - a Boston band that is decidedly not making Holiday Music. John Wayne Syndrome is a nice mixture of detached vocals, spacey guitars and keyboard flourishes.

I haven't found the album on Spotify or other streaming services, so it serves as yet another healthy reminder that those destinations are not the end-all for music discovery.

After this post from Priscilla Page, I've been exploring the works of Yamamoto Masao. His work is beautifully contemplative, likely due to his keen eye and printing process:

He blurs the border between painting and photography, by experimenting with printing surfaces. He dyes, tones (with tea), paints on, and tears his photographs. — Wikipedia

His website is a bit underwhelming in terms of showcasing his body of work but plenty of other sites and a simple Google Image Search unveil a massive amount of stunning images.

Pretty fascinating article from AL.com on Birmingham trying to outdo the Macy's parade in the 1960s. The city's "Downtown Action Committee" decided to put on their own parade that would rival the NYC staple, despite not having the power-line clearance to actually float any balloons. While balloons on trucks is not quite as visually impressive, they did manage to make some pretty wild creations well worth a look.

My feelings on Black Friday and Cyber Monday are a bit complicated. It's clearly a cash grab from big companies to promote spending but it's also an opportunity to lower some prices on items that otherwise may have been out of reach. As a small business owner, I can't help but think that's a good thing.

Striped Light

I recently stumbled upon Knoxville's Striped Light studio, the homebase for a collective of creators involved in letterpress, screenprinting, workshop classes and all sorts of other creative endeavors. Their shop is filled with a variety of goods from empowering messages to mind boggling patterns to classic show posters.

They are, of course, on Instagram and Tumblr if you'd like to follow along with updates on new creations.

Swim Reaper

New Zealand has really been crushing it lately. One such example of their exported goodness is this Swim Reaper ad campaign in which a fun-loving shepherd of death hangs out near dangerous water based locations and warns those that don't heed his warnings. He also just hangs out and has a nice time playing volleyball, like a Reaper do.
