Jon Fox / Soul of a Giant

posted November 1, 2017 #

Been enjoying a deep dive through the portfolio of Jon Fox. Working backwards (last item first) through the work you can see a distinct shift from straightforward depictions of chaotic scenarios into more abstracted, geometric based, chaotic scenarios. His most recent work feels more fluid but there's a good chunk of it depicting these tortured robotic creatures, somewhat abstractly.

That's a bunch of esoteric babble just to say, there's a fascinating vibe to his work and it requires more than a quick glance to properly enjoy.

Happy Halloween! Here's some appropriate links for the day. The above video, Mr. Sandman (Breakmaster Cylinder Remix), is an intense viewing but incredibly well edited.

Mystery Space Object, A/2017 U1

posted October 31, 2017 #

It may not be much to look at but the above image is believed to be the "first known comet or asteroid" to enter our solar system from elsewhere in the galaxy. They've named it A/2017 U1. Reading about its trajectory and speed is bewildering - it's blasting along at 15.8 miles per second and made a hairpin turn under our system in roughly a months time.

All of the articles about it are filled with technical details and scientists being very excited about the possibilities of the discovery. My favorite part is seeing the phrase "Interstellar Origin" - a coupling of words with immense implications that you we rarely get to see.

Phenakistoscope

Drew Tetz is a graphic designer and artist with his hand in many varieties of projects. From fine art to Yo-Yo creation to laser cut flatpack toys, he's all over the place. One particular endeavor that I find absolutely fascinating are his Phenakistiscope animations.

What's a Phenakistiscope? It's an early form of animation wherein individual frames are applied to a circular object and the spinning of said object creates movement. These record label and slip mat designs are great examples of it but Tetz goes even further by creating 3D sculptures with the same concept that have mesmerizing fluid movement.

His Instagram is a great place to dive in but be sure not to miss his animated doggo business cards.

What A Time To Be Alive

posted October 30, 2017 #

While there aren't very many episodes of it yet (two at the time of this posting), the What a Time To Be Alive podcast has been an extremely enjoyable listen thus far. Hosts Patrick Monahan, Kath Barbadoro and Eli Yudin count down the top items of the week worthy of note and comment on them. Simple as that. Maybe it's something absolutely ridiculous - like how to pronounce "AOL Instant Messenger" in acronym form - or something a bit more serious - like actual Nazi's being mad about Wolfenstein. Whatever the topic, they make it entertaining.

Pantomation

posted October 30, 2017 #

While we hurdle towards a world in which our phones recognize our faces and animate Emoji's based on what they see, it's nice to look back and see some of the tech that got us here. One such entry in that historical list is the Pantomation system, aka the Electric Pantograph, which was used to track movement based on a particular chromakey and apply real-time effects in the late 70's.

This intro video walks through the history of the device and its capabilities. Interesting, much of the application throughout the video is with dance and figure movement (for educational and artistic augmentation) not something you see mentioned too often when talking about the modern day equivalents like the Kinect.

An exhaustive rundown of the device can be read here but it's best to start with that video and go from there. At the very least, it's rife with GIF fodder.

William Tapley

posted October 30, 2017 #

Let's be clear about this up front, William Tapley is a loon. He's been posted videos to YouTube for years as the "Third Eagle of the Apocalypse" and "The Co-Prophet of these End Times." He believes he is a conduit for the True Word of God and loves to speak his truth via his YouTube channel. This kind of lunacy can be dangerous so I'm hesitant to even spotlight this guy because I think, at best, he just adds fuel to the fire of a world filled with Conspiracy Theories and Hidden Dangers.

Mr. Tapley is free to believe what he likes as long as he's not hurting anyone but, like Alex Jones, it's worth shining a light on this insanity to make sure we all agree it's insanity. Here's a few highlights: That is the very very tip of the iceberg with this guy. There's a massive archive of insanity if you're in the mood to get your brain scrambled for a bit.
