Well that’s the first time I got a drive by panhandling. A guy asked for money from the window of his car while I was in my car. #hardees

It feels great to get that Halloween mix out there. Hopefully you enjoy it (and the WOTT episode that preceeded it). This playlist is a mix of the standard distractions mixed with some Halloween theme. Why not get you the goods before the weekend instead of waiting until actual Halloween, which falls on a Tuesday. Lame. Don't forget to revisit last years playlist and take a deep dive on Halloween and horror GIFs.

yk Mix: Spell Caster

posted October 27, 2017 #

It's been a little over a year since I posted my last mix and since 2015 for my last Halloween mix. My lack of Halloween 2016 mix will likely haunt* me for awhile but it just made me all the more hellbent on making sure to get it right in 2017. So, I'm happy to present SPELL CASTER, roughly an hour of music to listen to while browsing your neighborhood hunting for the undead and random ghosts. Or maybe just to listen to in your office at full blast while there's a cauldron of dry ice creating a sweet mood. Maybe it's recency bias but I am happy with how this turned out. It's a nice balance of actually creepy songs and mood setting tracks.

Previous Halloween Mixes
ruination rumination (2015) Revival Denied (2014), Potions & Brews for Countless Horrors (2013), Paralyzed with Fear (2012), Endless Hell (2011), My Descent Into Madness (2010), Dark Despair (Undead Trespass) (2009), Crepuscular (2008), Et Tu, Morte? (2007), Songs for Spooks (2006), Pure Terror (2005)

We Own This Town: Volume 96

posted October 26, 2017 #

I was putting together a special Halloween episode of the We Own This Town podcast and received a number of great recommendations from Lance Conzett of bands to include. I decided why not have Lance curate the entire episode? He's a fantastic photographer, journalist and Halloween aficionado.

So, that happened! Volume 96 of the podcast is curated entirely by Lance and features a number of local Nashville artists that I'd never even heard of. It really spans a number of genres too - from Southern gothic darkness to house electronic music (with a spooky spin) to indie rock. It's all over the place but an excellent listen.
Go follow Lance and then enjoy this hour of music as a fitting backdrop to the holiday.

The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade

posted October 26, 2017 #

While I always enjoy a vintage Halloween photo dump, I often enjoy perusing archives of something a bit more recent - the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. The Manhattan spectacle has been going since 1974 and consistently features some of the most impassioned costumes on the block.

There's plenty of fascinating history behind the event and how it's grown and changed over the years but, mostly, it's just great for watching videos of weirdos and deep diving into costumes.

David Barnes, The Bee with Wheels

posted October 25, 2017 #

David Barnes is best known for his artwork that adorns the covers of Of Montreal albums, fronted by his brother Kevin. There's plenty of great interviews out there about his process and his latest projects but I'm really smitten with his sclulptural work. The Big Cartel shop - The Bee with Wheels - is filled with found objects that have been reworked into the acid-soaked, insane creature filled world that Barnes creates. He calls them "Ummels" and they are fascinating to say the very least.

Elsa Bleda

posted October 25, 2017 #

I know little of Elsa Bleda beyond this photostream of nighttime scenes featuring plenty of fog, neon, and extremely well capturing lighting. The stream is mostly devoid of people but when they do show up it's pretty great.

If you're not into a Flickr deep dive (understandable), you can peruse and follow along on Instagram as well.

Sammy

All around talented guy Sam Smith has launched a new endeavor entitled Sammy. The store is filled with prints showcasing Smith's wonderful color palettes and elusively simple designs. Oh, and there's a delightful enamel pin of the balloon logo. Looking forward to watching the store grow - so I'm following along, as you should too.

The Vibes

You may recall some time ago I posted about The Hand and Eye, a web destination powered by John Peabody and his journalistic endeavors (both photographic and written). It's a quality blog but that's selling it short.

Recently, Peabody released The Vibes, a short film about vibraphonist Chris Dingman. Your knee jerk reaction may not be to have much interest in a vibraphonist you've never heard of but I highly suggest watching the piece - its pace is contemplative and deliberate in showcasing Dingman's thoughtfulness and talent.
