Friday Videos - Oct 20th, 2017

posted October 20, 2017 #

Every week I browse through these Funny or Die GIFs to find an amusing bit of cover art for Friday Videos. The spooked cat this week seemed appropriate for the impending Halloween season but I also loved this one and then immediately felt bad for loving it. Maybe you'll have the same experience.
  • Star Trek Clips but Out Of Context - quite possibly the best 2 minutes and 36 seconds you'll have this week.
  • A Funny Shave - a silent film from 1905 in which a man hallucinates after eating some shaving cream. It's as slow paced as you'd imagine a film from 1905 would be but that final reveal is worth the investment. True terror.
  • Cut for Time: Climate Change - so far, the best gags of SNL this season have been the skits that were cut. Maybe it's an intentional trend? I still watch the show every week and I can't fully explain why.
  • Proof that Mark Zuckerberg is Reptilian - love a good conspiracy theory mixed with terrible clipart.
  • Jim & Andy - trailer for a forthcoming documentary about Jim Carrey's portrayal of Andy Kaufman and why all of the behind-the-scenes footage was never released, until this movie.
  • Living with Jigsaw - I went in with the lowest expectations but chortled in amusement more than once.
  • KXVO Pumpkin Dance + Shaboi - that's right, a repeat from last week because I absolutely never tire of Pumpkin Dance or Shaboi this time of year. You shouldn't either.
Need something more? How about this hilariously long piece on the @dril twitter account?

Arrival OST arrives

posted October 20, 2017 #

Today is the official release of the Arrival short film soundtrack from Upright T-Rex Music. You can stream it on Soundcloud, hear it on Spotify (or your music destination of choice) or pick up the limited edition vinyl picture disc.
Given that it's music backing a short film, it makes sense that the runtime isn't all that long but that somehow makes it that much more enjoyable to listen to it. It's a quick journey that is easily repeatable.

Go watch the film, read about the soundtrack creation and then give it a listen or three.

Dave Paulson: Sandusky, Ohio

posted October 20, 2017 #

You may not know the name Dave Paulson but if you've been following this site for any amount of time you've likely encountered some of his works. He was a principal member of the band The Privates - featured in both the Lake Fever Sessions I worked on and the eponymous short film I mentioned awhile back - and he occasionally releases music as NORM. He's an excellent musician with an absurd handle on wrangling influences from 60's and 70's rock to 8-bit chiptune to dance-y pop songs all into one.

He recently launched a new project entitled Sandusky that will give him the wiggle room to write songs about something other than his own autobiographical experiences. That's it, it's a concept album. Based on the introductory video, it seems that he's drawn inspiration from a fat man in a little coat - if you get that reference, you should be intrigued at how one would write a worthwhile concept album around it.

He's certainly got the chops to pull off the project and is going the PledgeMusic route to help him do it the right way (studios, additional players, etc). So, if you're curious, have a look at his campaign and consider backing him. It's a wise idea.

The Tidal Gifts And Inventions Of Coupler

posted October 19, 2017 #

Ravelin Magazine debuted the newest Coupler video with the reveal of the title track video Invention 3: Gifts from the Ebb Tide. It's a beautifully contemplative, slow, video depicting desaturated clips of the sea and some anonymous protagonists. It fits the song well.

Equally as great, the magazine also posted a this lengthy interview with Ryan Norris about all sorts of topics - from his definition of Deliberate Ambient Music, his penchant for amusing liner notes and what it's like to be an electronic musician in Nashville.

Coming up this Friday, October 20th, is the official release of the Arrival short film soundtrack. If you haven't watched the film or read me gushing over the score, please familiarize yourself and/or go order it.

I sent some questions over to Ross Wariner and Cody Uhler of Upright T-Rex Music to find out more about the process behind the score creation.

Max Headroom Hijack

posted October 18, 2017 #

I recently became aware of the Max Headroom Broadcast Signal Intrusion incident in which a man dressed as Max Headroom took over the airwaves of two different stations; WGN-TV and WTTW. While both were fleeting intrusions, the later incident included plenty of bizarre audio that the first did not. You can watch the entire takeover (with subtitles) but good luck unraveling the mystery, as no one has been caught for it or claimed it as their own.

World Of VNC

posted October 18, 2017 #

Did you read about the latest Wi-Fi Security Breach? The KRACK attack lets hackers sniff traffic between a computer and a wireless access point; which means they'd be able to steal data or even inject ransomware. Fun stuff!

The Internet is still the Wild West. Mostly because it's built on technology built by humans so, of course, it will be imperfect. Take World of VNC as another wonderful example. The author scanned the Internet looking for Virtual Network Computing (VNC) connections that did not have a password and then took a screenshot. Nothing nefarious there but there's a massive repository of personal desktops, odd software and open POS servers. It's fascinating and, fortunately, not malicious. I suggest Browsing the archive and just clicking through Randomly. There's a world of weirdness.

Kandyland

posted October 17, 2017 #

Back in the winter of 2016, Thelma and the Sleaze embarked on a 31-show, 29-day "intra-city tour" in which they played sets everywhere from proper venues to McDonalds to snowy parking lots. The entire experience is captured in the Seth Graves documentary Kandyland. The trailer gives you a good idea of the antics and hardships involved. Despite never leaving one city, there's an entertaining road movie vibe to the whole thing as the band tackles different opportunities, vehicle breakdowns and band politics.

There's a few versions of the movie - depending on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go.

Robert Beatty

posted October 17, 2017 #

I recently felt awe struck by the cover for Mister Heavenly's latest and discovered that Robert Beatty was responsible for its creation. If you weren't aware, he also did Kesha's latest, Dent May's latest, Ariel Pink's latest and works for Thee Oh Sees and Tame Impala. There's a plethora of work from bands I'm less familiar with but the artwork is every bit as astounding. I hadn't been consciously looking out for his work previously but I absolutely will be now.
